Cubs fall to Trenton at Centennial Cup, face big game on Wednesday
The Greater Sudbury Cubs were down, but still not out after the NOJHL representatives suffered a second straight loss at the Centennial Cup national junior A hockey championship in Calgary on Monday night.

Alex Valade and Lincoln Moore scored and Karsen Chartier and Noah Beaulne combined for 23 saves as the Cubs dropped a 5-2 decision to the Trenton Golden Hawks, champions from the Ontario Junior Hockey League, at Max Bell Centre.

Greater Sudbury can still earn a quarter-final berth, however, with a victory over the Kam River Fighting Walleye of the Superior International Junior Hockey League on Wednesday.

Kam River, which had opened the tournament with an overtime win over Trenton, also suffered its second straight defeat on Monday, 3-2 against the Northern Manitoba Blizzard.

The Cubs' loss on Monday followed a split to open the tournament, including a 6-2 win over the Grande Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League on Friday and a 6-3 loss to the Blizzard of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League on Saturday.

David Fournier scored twice, while Aaron Brown, with a goal and an assist, and Taeo Artichuk, with two assists, led the way for Trenton on offence in Monday's win over Greater Sudbury. Ryan Sanborn made 26 saves, including 12 in the second period.

That middle frame was marked by controversy, as a potential go-ahead goal by the Cubs' Lucas Signoretti was waved off by the officials. Greater Sudbury staff and players argued the shot should have counted as Sanborn had knocked the net off its moorings, but the call went unchanged.
