Sources told ET that no such commitment was given by Moscow to Pakistan. The statement appears to be motivated and aimed at creating may be recalled that Pakistan in the past has been guilty of issuing such baseless statements involving its ties with Russia. Since the Ukraine war Pakistan has made very little purchases of Russian oil and has been involved in supplying ammunition to Ukraine.

Russia calls Pakistan key regional partner
ISLAMABAD Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk has stated that Pakistan and Russia are "natural allies" and that President Putin considers Pakistan as an important partner in the growth and development of economy and energy in the region. Overchuk expressed these views on Thursday in a meeting with a high-powered Pakistani delegation led by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi in Moscow. SAPM on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khanwho is also the focal person for the Pakistan Steel Mills projectwas also part of the delegation. During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral relations in all areas of mutual interest, including political, trade and economic cooperation, as well as energy, connectivity, industrial and agricultural cooperation. According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office, Pakistan and Russia agreed to continue mutual cooperation in different fields including political, trade and economic as well as energy sector. SAPM Fatemi underlined that Pakistan attached high importance to its relations with the Russian Federation, adding that strengthening relations with the latter was one of Pakistan's foreign policy priorities. He affirmed that Pakistan viewed Russia as a stabilizing factor in the international arena. "President Putin was greatly looking forward to his meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the forthcoming SCO-Council of Heads of State in Tianjin, China, in late August this year," Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk said during the meeting. SAPM Akhtar stated that Pakistan attached high importance to ongoing discussions on the new steel mills in Karachi, as the project carries an important legacy of Pakistan's relations with Russia, that could serve as a "leap forward" symbol of future cooperation and partnership. In 1956, Soviet premier Nikolai Bulganin offered technical and scientific assistance to Pakistan then prime minister Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy and expressed interest in establishing the country's first steel mills. The SAPM gave an overview of the investment-friendly industrial policy of Pakistan, that had ensured macro-economic stability, achieved under the present Government. During the meeting, DPM Overchuk who was assisted by key ministers, recalled his visit to Pakistan in September 2024 and his meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on the sidelines of the SCO-Heads of Government in Islamabad in October 2024. He also highlighted the significance of important connectivity projects between two countries, such as the railway connectivity between Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Russia, and the launching of pilot cargo train between Pakistan and Russia in August 2025. The two sides also touched upon regional and international issues, such as the situation in South Asia, Afghanistan, and the Middle East, as well as the bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Russia at all multilateral forums. The visit of the two SAPMs was deeply appreciated by Overchuk, who emphasized that President Putin was strongly in favor of further deepening of cooperation with Pakistan in all important sectors. He also shared that President Putin was greatly looking forward to his meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the forthcoming SCO-Council of Heads of State in Tianjin, China, in late August this year to further bolster bilateral ties. A high-powered Pakistani delegation led by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Syed Tariq Fatemi, as well as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, who is also the focal point for the Pakistan Steel Mills project, called on Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk in Moscow, Thursday. He also pointed out potential areas, such as hydropower, LPG and modernisation of oil refineries, as suitable for future collaboration. Top Russian official terms Pakistan ‘important partner' in economy and energy development
ISLAMABAD: A top Russian official on Thursday described Pakistan as an 'important partner' in the region's economic and energy development and called the two countries 'natural allies' during a meeting in Moscow, according to an official statement issued by the foreign office in Islamabad. The remarks were made by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk during an interaction with Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Foreign Affairs, Tariq Fatemi, and SAPM on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan. The delegation is currently in Moscow it attend INNOPROM, Russia's largest annual industrial trade fair, which brings together government delegations, business leaders and technology firms from over 30 countries to explore partnerships in manufacturing, engineering and high-tech industries. During the meeting, the Pakistani official said relations with Russia remained a key foreign policy priority for Islamabad. Overchuk also recalled his visit to Pakistan last year to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit where he was hosted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Prime Minister Sharif's adviser on industries and production highlighted the government's investment-friendly policies and ongoing discussions on establishing a new steel mill in Karachi, describing it as a potential 'leap forward' in Pakistan-Russia cooperation and a revival of a key legacy project. Originally built in the 1970s with Soviet assistance, the Pakistan Steel Mills stood for national self-sufficiency for decades before becoming non-operational in 2015 due to prolonged financial mismanagement, political interference and mounting losses. Talks are now underway between the two countries to launch a new steel mill project in Karachi. Welcoming the high-level visit, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk said President Putin remained committed to expanding cooperation with Islamabad across all major sectors. He also conveyed that the Russian president looked forward to meeting the Pakistani prime minister on the sidelines of the upcoming SCO-Council of Heads of State summit in Tianjin, China, later this August.

Ashwini Vaishnaw meets Russian Deputy PM, discusses rare earth metals and infrastructure
Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw , met Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk on Thursday. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation in areas such as transport, connectivity, infrastructure, and rare earth metals . Taking to social media platform X, Vaishnaw said: "Had a productive meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk. We discussed key areas of collaboration including transport, connectivity, infrastructure, and rare earth metals". The high-level meeting took place in St. Petersburg. According to a post shared by the Consulate General of India in St. Petersburg, the Union Minister is currently in Russia to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025), which began on June 18 and will continue until June 21. Before heading to Russia, the Minister inaugurated India's largest multi-modal automobile cargo terminal at the Maruti Suzuki India Limited plant in Manesar, Haryana, on June 17. The newly inaugurated Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal is expected to significantly boost logistics efficiency for automobile transport. The Manesar plant is now connected to the Patli railway station via a 10-kilometre rail link. This link is a key part of the 121.7-kilometre-long Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor, currently being developed by the Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDC). An investment of Rs 800 crore has been made for the construction of this 10-kilometre rail link, with the HRIDC contributing Rs 684 crore and the remainder funded by Maruti Suzuki. With a loading capacity of 4.5 lakh automobiles annually, this is now the largest cargo terminal of its kind in India. During the inauguration, Vaishnaw emphasised the transformation in Indian Railways over the past decade. "Before 2014, the annual railway budget was around Rs 24,000-Rs 25,000 crore. Today, it has risen to Rs 2.5 lakh crore," he stated.
