Dubai Taxi Company plans to launch driverless service in 2026, CEO says
Dubai Taxi Company is planning to launch its first autonomous taxi service in the emirate by the first quarter of 2026 to support Dubai's mobility strategy, its chief executive has said. The company is currently in talks with a number of its partners to accelerate the project, Mansoor Alfalasi told The National on Wednesday. "Of course, we are working very closely with our colleagues at the RTA [Roads and Transport Authority] to make sure that we cover all the aspects with regards to regulations, safety and operations," he said in an interview on Thursday. "A lot of exercises like testing need to be done in between ... so hopefully by the beginning of next year we'll see the first autonomous car hitting the road." The RTA will decide in which areas DTC's autonomous cars will be deployed, he added. The company is also exploring the possibility of launching its autonomous vehicle service with multiple car companies, "not necessarily sticking to one", Mr Alfalasi said. "We haven't made any selection because we are exploring different companies and we make sure that whenever we run a service, it should be beneficial for us in terms of safety, [which is a] top priority, and profitability," he added. The UAE aims to become a leader in smart mobility systems to boost sustainability and adopt the latest technologies. Dubai began supervised testing of driverless vehicles on its public roads in October 2023 after the US self-driving tech company Cruise, which is backed by General Motors and Honda Motor, was issued with a trial permit. In Abu Dhabi, Uber and China's WeRide launched the Middle East's first commercial driverless mobility service in December. The UAE capital already has its own fleet of driverless taxis on Yas Island run by TXAI, the UAE's first driverless taxi service. In addition, electric air taxis are expected to begin operating in Dubai during the first quarter of 2026, the RTA confirmed in September. DTC is also exploring a number of opportunities outside Dubai, including any potential partnerships or acquisitions, Mr Alfalasi said. It has already partnered with delivery service Talabat in Abu Dhabi for last-mile services, which is "really lucrative and [provides] a lot of potential" to DTC, he said. DTC also has a partnership with the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority, which it signed in 2023. "We still don't have clarity, but the opportunities are there. To build the business, we are working on this organically; of course, any kind of merger or acquisition, we are looking into it," Mr Alfalasi said. DTC on Wednesday announced its first full-year results after its initial public offering last year, with net profit down by about 4 per cent annually to Dh331.3 million ($90.2 million) on interest charges and tax obligations. But excluding interest and tax, profit was up 18 per cent year-on-year. DTC is looking to further expand its fleet in 2025; the company added 744 vehicles in 2024, taking its total operational taxi fleet to 5,960. "The target in 2025 is to stay aggressive with acquiring new [taxi] plates because Dubai is building up its population and urban planning, as well as its visitors," Mr Alfalasi said. Revenue for the 12 months ended December grew more than 12 per cent annually to nearly Dh2.2 billion, driven by the growth in Dubai's population, tourism and urban expansion. DTC's board of directors has also recommended an additional Dh122.3 million dividend for 2024, taking the fiscal year's total to Dh281.6 million, "in line with our highly attractive dividend policy to distribute at least 85 per cent of annual net profit", the company said.

Dubai Taxi plans to expand services to other emirates
Publicly listed Dubai Taxi Company (DTC) is planning on expanding operations across the UA, not just in the ride-hailing platform business, but also in operating taxis and limousines in other emirates, the company CEO told Khaleej Times on the sidelines of the ongoing World Governments Summit in Dubai on Tuesday. 'We are exploring new markets. Right now, we are only operating taxis and limousines in Dubai. But we are studying our next steps to explore and see how we can expand our fleet (to other emirates),' DTC CEO Mansoor Rahma Alfalasi said. Founded in 1994, DTC evolved into a public shareholding company in 2023. It currently operates more than 9,000 vehicles, including 6000 taxis and has a workforce of 17,500 drivers across four primary businesses such as taxis, VIP limousines, buses, and delivery services. DTC has already expanded its business by partnering with global e-hailing platform Bolt in December last year, offering mainly limousine services. Alfalasi also told Khaleej Times earlier that regular taxi services could be introduced on Bolt in first quarter this year. Alfalasi noted Bolt is considered as the 'world's biggest e-hailing app with more than 200 million active users across more than 600 cities in more than 50 countries.' 'If Bolt wants to expand across the UAE and beyond the region, and wants us to be a partner, we are open to it,' he added, noting: 'Expansion means offering other business verticals, including micro-mobility solutions such as e-scooter and e-bike rentals, food and grocery delivery, and short-term car rental. Alfalasi added DTC already has a presence in Abu Dubai, through its partnership with Talabat in operating delivery bikes. There are also school buses operated by DTC in Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman. 'Whenever we are ready to announce expanding our taxi operations in other emirates, we will disclose it to the public,' he underscored. Meanwhile, Alfalasi also said Dubai is on track to having autonomous taxis plying the streets of Dubai in 2026. Fully-automated self-driving taxis have been deployed as early as September 2023 following the mapping of Jumeirah 1 area. The complete operation of driverless taxi and e-hail services will make Dubai the first city in the world to commercially operate Cruise self-driving vehicles outside the US.

AI, geopolitics and governance: Oliver Wyman unveils key insights at World Government Summit 2025
DUBAI – As global leaders convene for the World Governments Summit 2025 in Dubai under the theme 'Shaping Future Governments', Oliver Wyman, a global management consulting firm and a business of Marsh McLennan (NYS: MMC), and Knowledge Partner of the Summit, is sharing insights on key trends reshaping governance models and the role of government in an era of rapid technological change and geopolitical shifts. Oliver Wyman Forum's 'State Of Our World 2025' report underscores how the rise of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), coupled with evolving economic blocs and industrial policies, is prompting governments to rethink their approaches to drive innovation, ensure resilience, and meet citizen needs. Adel Alfalasi, Partner and United Arab Emirates Head at Oliver Wyman said, 'We are at an inflection point where embracing innovation is no longer an option but a necessity to remain competitive in the global arena. The rapid advancement of emerging technologies presents both unprecedented opportunities and complex challenges for GCC governments. They are embracing digital technologies to enhance service delivery, improve efficiency, and foster greater transparency and accountability. This transformation requires a shift from traditional, bureaucratic models to citizen-centric approaches that prioritize user experience and seamless online interactions.' The State Of Our World report also highlights how the lines between economic and national security interests are blurring, with governments increasingly leveraging tools like export controls, tariffs, and investment screening to protect domestic industries and supply chains. 'As the world becomes more fragmented, deeper regional cooperation and integration will be crucial for the GCC to leverage its unique geo-strategic position, enhancing its collective resilience and global competitiveness,' Alfalasi added. Ana Kreacic, Chief Knowledge Officer at Oliver Wyman Group and an author of the State Of Our World report, emphasized the need for a 'geopolitics-first' mindset as the global order shifts toward a multipolar system with increased protectionism and economic blocs. 'Geopolitical tension, innovation breakthroughs, and competition are reshaping markets, driving a surge in industrial policies aimed at boosting self-sufficiency in strategic sectors,' said Kreacic. 'Both national governments and multinational businesses must constantly review and adapt their strategies to navigate this new reality, mitigating risks while capitalizing on emerging opportunities.' While enthusiasm for AI remains high, with 97% of organizations recognizing its value, only 17% have found their investments exceeding expectations so far, according to an Oliver Wyman survey of 300 global firms. However, sectors like healthcare and banking are emerging as early standouts, achieving double-digit cost savings and revenue growth through targeted AI applications. Oliver Wyman's insights emphasize the imperative for governments to foster cultures of innovation, invest in sustainable development, and prioritize human-centric policymaking to build a brighter future for all. As the State Of Our World report notes, history suggests that transformative technologies build slowly before taking off, with productivity gains surging once adoption hits 60%. 'The World Governments Summit provides a unique platform for leaders to engage in constructive dialogue, share best practices, and collectively chart a path forward,' added Alfalasi. 'By embracing a collaborative approach and prioritizing the needs of our citizens, we can navigate the complexities of the 21st century and build a brighter future for all.'
