Federation of Chambers of Commerce rejects US sanctions on Yemeni businessmen
Sana'a – SABA:
The General Federation of Yemeni Chambers of Commerce and Industry issued a statement condemning the US sanctions imposed on some Yemeni businessmen, the latest of which is the head of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Sanaa City, Ali Muhammad Al-Hadi.
The statement stressed that Yemeni businessmen are neutral from conflicts, following the March 31, 2016 declaration on the neutrality of the private sector in Yemen. He also rejected the charges against Al-Hadi, stressing that they "lack evidence", and that his appointment was made by Law No. (28) of 2003 after the end of the term of the previous council.
The Union explained that Ali Al-Hadi's foreign visits, including his visit to Moscow, were for purely economic purposes to secure the Yemeni market's needs of wheat, without any political goals or official meetings with Russian officials.
These sanctions "exacerbate the economic and humanitarian crisis" in Yemen, where 90% of basic needs depend on imports. He also stressed that Ali Al-Hadi is a major supplier of basic food commodities, such as wheat, flour, sugar and rice.
The General Federation of Chambers of Commerce called on the US administration to reconsider the sanctions and remove Ali Mohammed Al-Hadi's name from the list, warning of the catastrophic effects of these decisions on the Yemeni people.
