2 fake policemen arrested for theft
Raichur: Two men who posed as police personnel and robbed women of jewellery were arrested in Raichur district on Saturday.
The arrested, Ali Tayyab and Abbas Mustafa, would alert unsuspecting women about the risks of fines for wearing gold jewellery.
They would then steal the jewellery under the guise of offering assistance in wrapping it, west station police said.
In a recent incident, the pair stole a 20-gram gold chain valued at Rs 2 lakh from an elderly woman named Padma in the city. They then escaped on a motorcycle. Following this incident, the West Station police established a special team to capture the offenders.
The suspects were arrested on Saturday while they were checking vehicles at a barricade along the highway close to Gabbur police station limits in Devdurg taluk. The investigation uncovered that the suspects previously engaged in gold jewellery thefts in Pune. The police retrieved the gold chain that was taken from Padma.
