Mainstream media still trusted for accurate, in-depth reports, says Alice Lau
Lau (seated fifth left) is seen with SJA members and guests at the event. SIBU (June 10): Social media may be the common mode used to share news but mainstream media such as newspapers and television stations are still trusted for providing accurate and in-depth reports, said Alice Lau. The Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker said journalists are trained to seek the truth, verify facts, as well as present fair and balanced reports to the public. 'They are not just sharing messages but are truth-seekers and truth-tellers, helping our society make sense of complex issues,' she said at the Sibu Journalists Association (SJA) installation and Gawai celebration last night. The Lanang MP said in today's digital era, social media and online platforms have enabled information to travel faster than ever. While this is convenient, she pointed out there are also challenges as misinformation and fake news can spread rapidly, especially through unverified sources. 'Nowadays, anyone can post content, information, or news on platforms like Facebook, WeChat, TikTok, or Instagram. But that doesn't make everyone a journalist. As more people turn to social media and 'self-media', journalists also need to keep up. 'This doesn't mean just blindly following the latest trends, but rather strengthening their professional skills, using new tools wisely, and staying true to their mission,' she said. Lau pointed out that while most people can cook, not everyone can become a master chef. She also shared that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had announced an additional RM1 million this year for the Tabung Kasih @ Hawana. The fund, set up in April 2023, helps media professionals facing health challenges or in urgent need of support. 'This shows that the Madani government truly appreciates the hard work and contributions of journalists in our country,' added Lau. To date, 405 media members have received aid from Tabung Kasih @ Hawana. Among those attending the SJA event were Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh; Sibu MP Oscar Ling; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng; Joshua Ting – a political secretary to the Premier, who represented Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing; and SJA chairperson Florence Nervyn. In stating this, Lanang MP Alice Lau has noted that one of the benefits is the education given to the riders advocating the practice of safe behaviours on the road. 'Additionally, obtaining a licence requires them to learn about the process, including the laws and everything else involved,' she told reporters when met after attending the closing ceremony of the BLM for the Lanang parliamentary constituency, at SMK Sacred Heart here today. This initiative by the Transport Ministry through the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is one of the government's efforts to provide assistance to the B40 (low-income) group in obtaining a Class B2 motorcycle licence. Meanwhile, JPJ Sarawak director Norizan Jili said since the programme's implementation in early last year, a total of 13,370 participants had received their B2 licences. 'In 2025, a total of 3,078 residents across Sarawak have successfully obtained their licenses. 'The number of participants will continue to be increased from time to time based on the set conditions and criteria,' said Norizan. Also in attendance was JPJ Sibu branch chief Nurul Fairezzah Safri. Alice Lau BLM Class B2 Motorcycle Licence Assistance Programme Sibu

Fish on the clothesline? Auckland noodle house denies allegations, but downgraded
A viral video showing fish fillets hanging on a clothesline behind a Mt Albert restaurant named 'Mt. Albert BBQ Noodle House' has sparked a food safety investigation , leading to a downgrade in the restaurant's hygiene rating. The video shared on Instagram on April 18 shows approximately 20 white fish fillets hanging on a clothesline in a shared backyard area. The location was identified as being associated with BBQ Noodle House on New North Road, based on signage visible in the footage. Alice Lau, manager of BBQ Noodle House, firmly denied any connection to the fish, stating that the area is a communal space shared with residents living above the restaurant. "That is confirmed that that fish is for the resident, nothing used for the consumer or any customers," Lau told RNZ. She added that the tenant responsible had apologized and assured that it would not happen again. 5 5 Next Stay Playback speed 1x Normal Back 0.25x 0.5x 1x Normal 1.5x 2x 5 5 / Skip Ads by by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo Auckland Council 's food safety officer visited the restaurant on April 23 and downgraded the restaurant's food hygiene rating from an A to a D. An improvement notice was issued, prohibiting the drying of fish or any other food outside the premises. Lau expressed her concern over the impact of the incident on the restaurant's reputation. She said that regular customers had begun questioning the restaurant's hygiene, causing reputational damage. She also highlighted the cultural aspect of drying food, explaining that while the restaurant uses canned salted fish imported from overseas in some dishes, it does not practice outdoor drying. Live Events She explained that it's a traditional practice that has been used for centuries in China. Different communities have developed their methods of preserving and preparing it. "In ancient times, people dried meat to preserve it because they didn't have refrigerators," she said. "They dried vegetables too. When they wanted to use them, they'd soak the dried food in water, then cook it in dishes like dumplings or buns, or stir-fry it with meat. It's just like using fresh ingredients, but with a different flavor." Under Auckland Council's Food Safety Information Bylaw 2020, food businesses are required to adhere to strict hygiene standards and display their food grade certificates prominently. The bylaw aims to promote high food safety standards across the region. The restaurant has been given a fortnight to address the issues before a follow-up inspection.
