Association seeks regulation of fee collection by colleges
Madurai: The All India Students' Association (AISA) submitted a petition to Madurai district collector K J Praveen Kumar on Wednesday, alleging that several govt and govt-aided colleges are collecting fees beyond govt-fixed rates. In the petition, the association said the illegal practice placed an undue financial burden on students and urged the district administration to take action to safeguard students' rights. It said students failing to pay are being denied hall tickets, marksheets, and other certificates, and alleged that some colleges are collecting tuition fees for three years at once. Several students who are eligible for scholarships are forced to pay the full tuition fee, and private colleges affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University provide no clarity on the additional payments collected, it said and sought a probe into the matter. The association also demanded strict enforcement of the Tamil Nadu Private Colleges Regulation Act and refund of excess fees collected so far to the students. AISA is planning to conduct a protest on Panagal Road in the city soon to voice its demands.

JNU students vote for revival of PhD entrance exam in 'referendum'
Students participating in a "referendum" held by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) have voted heavily for reinstating the entrance exam for PhD admissions in the prestigious university. In the polling, that took place between 5 pm and 10 pm on Saturday in the hostel areas on the university campus, 1,323 of the 1,424 votes cast favoured bringing back the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE). Ninety-six voted against it while five votes were declared invalid. The Left-wing All India Students' Association (AISA), which holds the JNUSU president post, had urged students to vote for the restoration of the entrance exam. In a statement, the university student union criticized the JNU vice-chancellor for allegedly backtracking on her promise, made during a 16-day hunger strike, to conduct an in-house PhD entrance exam for 2025 admissions. "Madam VC backtracked from her word'. JNU VC consciously decides to pay no heed to the deans of the schools and chairpersons of the special centres, who overwhelmingly opined in favour of the JNUEE," JNUSU said in a statement. Speaking to PTI, JNUSU President Nitish Kumar said, "We want admissions for PhDs to be granted through the entrance exam and not based on UGC-NET. It has been a very long-standing demand.

Kashmiri Student Assaulted At Jamia Millia Islamia, Mess Worker Detained
New Delhi: A mess worker at the Jamia Millia Islamia University in the national capital has been detained for allegedly assaulting a Kashmiri woman student on campus, police said on Monday. The alleged assault took place around 9:30 pm on April 27 when a 24-year-old second-year MA student was allegedly assaulted by a 22-year-old mess worker, identified as Abid. "The accused was detained the same night. The student has not yet filed a formal complaint, but she is expected to do so today, after which an FIR will be registered," a police official stated. Police added that the altercation stemmed from a personal matter. According to a student group, the assault occurred outside Gate 8 of the campus. The university administration has not yet issued an official response. The All India Students' Association (AISA) at Jamia condemned the assault, calling it a serious security lapse. They alleged the incident was linked to ongoing harassment faced by Kashmiri students in the aftermath of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, though police maintain it was an isolated personal dispute. AISA has criticised the security staff, claiming they stood by during the incident and allowed the accused to re-enter campus unchecked. "Despite being a heavily militarized space, the university has repeatedly failed in its responsibility to ensure safety," AISA said. The group demanded a transparent investigation, strict action against the perpetrator, and accountability of the security personnel involved. Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has released emergency helpline numbers and formed a dedicated team to support students and liaise with authorities. 26 people were killed in the Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam terrror attack which took place in Baisaran meadow. It was one of the deadliest attacks in the region since the 2019 Pulwama strike, which claimed the lives of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans.
