Must-see concerts this week: Dead Man Winter, Lizzo, Soul Asylum
The one day of summer that arrived last week is gone and it's time to get back inside and see some music. It's a week that's got big names of local music and experiemental music on tap, including headlining gigs from Lizzo, Soul Asylum, Dead Man Winter, Kiss the Tiger, and P.O.S. Here's what's happening on stages around the Twin Cities this week. Thursday, March 20 at Northrop Auditorium / Saturday, March 22 at Berlin Liquid Music is present two shows this week featuring outstanding performers who rarely (if ever) stop in the Twin Cities. On Thursday, composer, organist, and electronic musician Kali Malone will bring All Life Long to town. The album features Malone on organ with a choir and brass quintet. For this show, she'll play Northrop's pipe organ accompanied by the prolific Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), Khanate), as well as choral and brass ensembles from the U of M. Malone's recent output has been consistently lush, adventurous, and intensely captivating. On Saturday, the series hosts the Minneapolis debut of pianist and composer Kelly Moran. She'll play music from Moves in the Field, a contemporary classical record that features duets between Moran and her Yamaha Disklavier, a sort of modern player piano. (On the record, she steps away from the Hauschka-esque prepared piano works of recordings like Bloodrot.) It's an moving, at times sparse, work that isn't just for fans of classical music. Moran has worked with many boundary-pushing artists, such as Oneohtrix Point Never, Yves Tumor, and FKA Twigs. Thursday, March 20 at Walker Art Center From his time with Mercury Prize-nominated groups like The Comet Is Coming or Sons of Kemet to his work as a jazz saxophonist, Shabaka Hutchings has consistently found ways to innovate and surprise listeners. As he was rising as a solo player, he shocked fans by setting the saxophone down to focus on flute. (If that reminds you of the transition made by Andre 3000 — even if Shabaka was already a jazz musician — you're not alone. The two have collaborated on flute.) Shabaka is never static and when he performs with an ensemble at the Walker this week, audiences are undoubtedly in for something exciting. Thursday, March 20 at First Avenue A project of Dave Simonett of Trampled by Turtles fame, Dead Man Winter leans toward the rocking end of the Americana spectrum compared to TBT's bluegrass roots. Though it's probably unfair to think of Dead Man Winter as a side project. Simonett has been playing under that name for more than 15 years, including the group's third full-length album, released last year, Always Here / Always Now. Little Fevers will open. Saturday, March 2 at Fine Line The post-rock metal outfit from Chicago comes to Downtown Minneapolis with fellow sludgy metalheads Pelican. For all their music's heft, Russian Circles can feel like a meditative experience live. Their encompassing sound can shift from drone to big riffs, doom folk to a wall of noise. The long-running Pelican is a perfect pairing for the night. Thursday, March 21–Saturday, March 23 at 7th St. Entry The Entry is celebrating 45 years as the little sibling to First Avenue. For three nights this week, it'll host underplays from local groups that have graced the stage in years past. The festivities start on March 21 with Soul Asylum headlining a show that also features the Mighty Mofos and Arcwelder. The next night, Doomtree rapper P.O.S. takes the stage with Makr An Eris opening. On the 23rd, it'll close up the run with Kiss the Tiger, who are joined by the Bad Bad Hats-adjacent Megasound and Eric Mayson. Speaking of underplays, Lizzo is returning after stepping out of the spotlight following sexual harassment accusations that she denied in court. She's got new music on the way and is doing three underplays around the country to kick things off. That includes a March 18 gig at Frist Avenue that is, unsurprisingly, sold on Monday, Mar. 17: Alcest with MONO and Kaelan Mikla at the Fine Line The Belfast Cowboys: St. Patrick's Day Party at Turf Club Ladysmith Black Mambazo at The Dakota Erik Fratzke/Nathan Hanson at Berlin Emmy Woods at 331 Club (free) Sparrow Catcher at The White Squirrel Bar (free) Roe Family Singers at 331 Club (free) Concerts on Tuesday, Mar. 18: Lizzo at First Avenue The Passion of Joan of Arc with live film score by Paris 1919 at The Parkway Theater Ginger Commodore: A Tribute to the Life and Music of Roberta Flack at The Dakota Dad Bod, Bummer Camp, 12th House Sun, Linus, and Berzica at Green Room Dug with Moon Pussy, Church Fire, and E.T. at Zhora Darling Lesser Care with Echo Signal and Witch Syndicate at Uptown VFW Dust City Opera,, Flatwound, and Sine Iris at Amsterdam Bar & Hall International Reggae Allstars at Bunker's YUHH Tuesday night residency with Ray Gun Youth and Cause for Concern at The White Squirrel Bar Michelle Cann at Convention Center Auditorium The New Havoline Supremes at The White Squirrel Bar (free) Venus de Mars at 331 Club (free)Concerts on Wednesday, Mar. 19: Honestav with Damien Styles at Fine Line Altan at The Dakota Nurses with Echoes of Regret, Noxious, and Graze at Pilllar Forum Lee Bains III with Eleganza! at 7th St. Entry Alone-a, Rabbit By Owl Light, and M.
