'Youth club in son's memory will get anxious kids socialising'

The parents of a boy who was stabbed to death at school have begun work towards setting up a youth club in his memory. Harvey Willgoose's parents, Caroline and Mark, have campaigned against knife crime since the 15-year-old was killed at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield in February. Mrs Willgoose said: "We need to get the kids back out, socialising, meeting up like we used to. I want the awareness out - I'll talk to kids about knife crime and the devastation it brought." They are funding four sessions to establish what activities young people would want to take part in at a permanent youth hub, which they are raising money towards. Always an Alternative, a youth and anti-knife crime charity in Sheffield which runs a mobile youth club, provided the resources for the session. The club, run out of a van, gives young people a space to play video games, do homework, play sports, produce music and do arts and crafts. Mrs Willgoose said: "Kids are our future; we've got to do it for them. "A lot of them have anxiety, and I think that is to do with Covid – a big chunk of their childhood has been taken away through that." They plan to name the permanent club "Harvey's Hub". Mrs Willgoose said: "I want the awareness out there - I will go into schools and festivals to talk. "I'll talk to kids about knife crime and the devastation it brought to us, to his friends, to the community, to the school, and to the kids that were there." Harvey's funeral, which was held at Sheffield Cathedral a fortnight after his death, was attended by hundreds of people. His parents described him as a "loveable rogue" and "a joy to be around". The family want the hub to be based at the Miners' Welfare Club in Beighton, which they described as Harvey's "happy place". On Monday a 15-year-old boy admitted Harvey's manslaughter but denied murdering him at Sheffield Crown Court. Sheffield school's anti-knife crime scheme nominated for award

An anti-knife crime initiative designed to help young people who are feeling unsafe find support has been shortlisted for an Ask for Nik scheme encourages anyone feeling threatened to seek discreet help in local shops and by pupils at Sheffield Park Academy, it allows people to enter participating stores and discreetly indicate to staff they do not feel safe by asking: 'Is Nik working?'The scheme had been used in the city on a number of occasions since its launch, the school said, with it now nominated for a NextGenLeaders award. Becks Wheatley, programme manager for NextGenLeaders, said: "The students came up with this idea and developed it themselves."We know it's having an impact because people are genuinely using this in the stores, they are seeking support so this is a genuinely impactful project."The scheme, which operates in eight Asda branches in Sheffield, takes a similar approach as the national Ask for Angela for Angela allows people who feel unsafe in bars or clubs to discreetly seek help. Located near All Saints Catholic High School, where 15-year-old schoolboy Harvey Willgoose was stabbed to death in February, pupils at Sheffield Park Academy said knife crime was a growing issue locally. Morgan, a student involved in the scheme, said: "There's been a few incidents. There was one at the bottom of the road where someone got stabbed in the neck and we just felt like we needed to do something."You can go into a shop and if you ask them if Nik's working, they will take you to a safer place and make sure that you are not on your own and you're not scared."After the store assistant has offered support, a trusted adult is another pupil, said: "[Harvey's death] scared me and it also woke me up to reality, because it made me realise that terrible things can happen at any time, anywhere."Students hoped the scheme would "go national" and gain wider advertising, she added. The NextGenLeaders awards in Yorkshire celebrate students who have developed ideas to make a positive impact in their communities and designed to foster a sense of social awards ceremony will take place in Leeds on 15 May. Girl sentenced to 15 years for ‘terrifying' Welsh school stabbing

The 14-year-old schoolgirl attacked teacher Fiona Elias with a multi-tool knife at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in south Wales. PHOTO: LONDON - A girl who wounded two teachers and a pupil in a 'terrifying' Welsh school stabbing was sentenced to more than seven years in custody on April 28, as the UK confronts a string of knife attacks by children. The 14-year-old schoolgirl attacked teacher Fiona Elias with a multi-tool knife at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in south Wales on April 24, 2024. Security camera footage played at Swansea Crown Court showed how the girl then set upon teacher Liz Hopkin who had intervened to protect her colleague, before going on to stab another girl. All three victims survived. The attacker, who cannot be named because of her age, was found guilty of attempted murder earlier this year and given a 15-year youth sentence on April 28, with at least half to be served in custody. Witnesses said the girl shouted that she was going to kill Ms Elias as she lunged at her. Ms Elias told the court the scars from her injuries were a constant reminder the girl 'tried to murder me' and urged her to turn her life around. Ms Hopkin, who was stabbed in the neck and airlifted to hospital, told the girl: 'I'm glad that I was there with Fiona and could stop you from killing her.' 'I truly believe that I saved you both that day.' Mr Michael Cray of the Crown Prosecution Service, which brings criminal cases in England and Wales, called the stabbing 'terrifying'. Sheffield stabbing Also on April 28, a 15-year-old boy pleaded guilty to the killing of another teenager in a separate UK school stabbing. The boy admitted the manslaughter of Mr Harvey Willgoose, also 15, but denied murder at a court hearing in the northern city of Sheffield. Mr Willgoose died after he was stabbed at All Saints Catholic High School in the city on Feb 3. A judge ordered that the teenager be held in youth detention until he stands trial on June 30. 'We are utterly heartbroken at the loss of our beautiful boy,' the family said following their son's death. The attack is one of several fatal stabbings involving young victims, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called knife crime a 'national crisis'. The government has announced a series of initiatives including bans on certain types of blade, and on Friday it said tech platforms would face tougher sanctions for harmful online knife-crime content. Knife crime in England and Wales has been steadily rising since 2011, according to government data. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

15-year-old boy pleads guilty to killing teen in British school stabbing amid spate of knife crime in UK

How Netflix's "Adolescence" is starting worldwide conversations about risks of online misogyny A 15-year-old boy on Monday pleaded guilty to the killing of another teenager in a British school stabbing, the latest in a string of U.K. knife-crime deaths involving children. The boy, who cannot be named due to his age, admitted the manslaughter of Harvey Willgoose, also 15, but denied murder at a court hearing in the northern city of Sheffield. Willgoose died after he was stabbed in the grounds of All Saints Catholic High School in the city on Feb. 3. The judge, Jeremy Richardson, addressed the boy, who was flanked by security staff and an intermediary, the BBC reported. "A jury will decide if you are guilty or not guilty of the more serious charge of murder," the judge said, before asking if he understood what had been said during the hearing. A previous court hearing heard Willgoose was stabbed twice in the chest while on a lunch break at the school, according to the BBC. Willgoose's parents have since campaigned against knife crime and said they wanted to set up a youth club in Sheffield in his memory, the BBC reported. Prime minister calls knife crime a "national crisis" The attack is one of a series of fatal stabbings involving young victims. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called knife crime a "national crisis." "We are utterly heartbroken at the loss of our beautiful boy, 'Harvey Goose,'" the family said in a statement after visiting the school following their son's death. The U.K. government has announced a series of initiatives aimed at reducing knife crime. A ban on owning "zombie" style weapons with blades of more than eight inches came into force last September. Another ban targeting ninja swords — long straight blades of between 14 and 24 inches, with a sharply angled tip — will start Aug. 1. The government said on Friday it would also bring in tougher sanctions for tech platforms for harmful knife-crime content online. The Home Office said firms would face fines of up to $80,000 if they failed to remove such content within 48 hours of a police warning, in addition to existing fines of about $13,000 for individual tech bosses. Knife crime in England and Wales has been steadily rising since 2011, according to official government data. In the year leading up to March 2024, there were 262 murders in England and Wales using a knife or sharp instrument, according to the Ben Kinsella Trust, an anti-knife crime charity. Of those murdered, 57 were under the age of 25.
