NWSL expansion team, the Denver Summit, acquires its first player in a trade with the Pride
The Denver Summit have acquired forward Ally Watt in a trade with the Orlando Pride, making her the expansion club's first player. The Summit will start play in the National Women's Soccer League next season. As part of the deal announced Wednesday, Watt was loaned back to the Pride for the rest of this season. Watt, a 28-year-old native of Colorado Springs, has been with the Pride since 2022, making 73 appearances across all competitions with the club and scoring eight goals with six assists. She also had stints with the North Carolina Courage and the Seattle Reign. The announcement comes a week after the Summit announced that Nick Cushing would be the team's head coach. 'It's an incredible honor to be the first player in Denver Summit FC history,' Watt said in a statement Wednesday. 'As a Coloradan, this opportunity means so much to me, not just to play the game I love, but to represent the place that shaped who I am in front of the people that mean the most to me. I'm proud to help lay the foundation for something special alongside Nick Cushing, and I can't wait to be a part of building a team that this city can be proud of.' Watt was signed by Denver through the 2028 season. Orlando receives $75,000 in expansion allocation money and $35,500 in intra-league transfer funds as part of the trade. 'Ally has been an exceptional contributor to our organization, and when the opportunity arose to facilitate her return to Colorado — where she can help establish professional women's soccer in her home state — we knew it was the right decision,' said Pride sporting director Haley Carter. 'The loan structure through 2025 allows us to retain her valuable contributions on the field as we pursue our championship goals, while also enabling her to be part of Denver's inaugural NWSL season.' Cushing is the former interim head coach of Manchester City Women in the WSL and former head coach of New York City FC in Major League Soccer. He told The Athletic last week he envisioned building a roster with a healthy mix of players with deep ties to Colorado, experienced winners and young stars. With Watt, Denver has one of the necessary ingredients to build more momentum around the expansion club's inaugural season. In her three seasons with the Pride, Watt has made 60 appearances, netting six goals and three assists. She played a key role in the Pride's historic 2024 season, which included winning the NWSL Shield and NWSL Championship. With three assists in the postseason, Watt ended the year tied for second-most assists in NWSL playoff history. Watt was selected sixth in the 2020 NWSL Draft by the North Carolina Courage and has played for OL Reign and Melbourne City FC, where she and the team won the 2019-20 A-League Women's title. On the international level, she represented the U.S. at the U-19 level, scoring two goals during the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Ally Watt becomes first Denver Summit FC player after trade
August 4 - Denver Summit FC will not make its NWSL debut until next season, but the new franchise has its first player after acquiring forward Ally Watt from the Orlando Pride, ESPN reported Monday. Watt will not depart Orlando immediately since her new club loaned her back to the Pride after the transaction became official. Orlando received $75,000 in expansion allocation money, $37,500 in transfer funds and salary cap relief in return, according to the report. Watt, 28, has one goal and one assist this season in 13 games. She did not play in Sunday's 1-1 tie against the Utah Royals because of an ankle injury. She has played for the NWSL's Orlando franchise since 2022 and played in three games with Australia's Melbourne City in 2020. Watt was drafted sixth overall by the North Carolina Courage in 2020 but never played in an NWSL regular-season game with the club after a knee injury during a Challenge Cup match. --Field Level Media
