ALOR SETAR - Despite battling blood cancer for two years, 18-year-old Muhammad Fakhrullah Haziq remains determined to pursue his dream of becoming a successful air-conditioning technician and changing his family's fate.
A student at Alor Setar Vocational College, Fakhrullah first noticed prolonged fever symptoms before his condition was confirmed.
'I once fainted while waiting for treatment at the Old Alor Setar Hospital three years ago and had to be rushed by ambulance to the Emergency Department at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB).
'Doctors then took a blood sample and confirmed that I had blood cancer,' he said at his home in Flat Seri Gemilang. Fakhrullah (second from right) aspires to become a successful air-conditioning technician and change his family's circumstances one day.
The illness forced him to take a year-long break from his studies to focus on chemotherapy. He has since returned to continue his education in the field he loves.
His mother, Hasmidar Hassan, 44, has been his sole caretaker since the passing of her husband.
'Every three months, he undergoes a bone marrow examination at the hospital. I only earn an income by taking sewing orders and the earnings are very inconsistent,' she said.
She added that they rely heavily on monthly aid of RM500 from the Kedah State Zakat Board (LZNK) to cover basic expenses including rent, groceries and transportation to the hospital.
Hasmidar's eldest child, now married and residing in Kuala Lumpur, helps as much as she can but is unable to be physically present to assist during Fakhrullah's treatments.
'Fakhrullah's sister lives in Kuala Lumpur and helps as much as she can. Actually, clothing orders for sewing have also decreased recently, which has affected my income.
'Thankfully, we receive monthly assistance from LZNK, which has somewhat helped support the two of us,' she said.
Cancer Survivors Malaysia (CSM) Chairperson, Zuraini Kamal, visited the family and presented a donation. She urged the public to come forward and lend support.
