'Proud to be here' – Real Madrid star reacts to debut appearance in pre-season victory

Real Madrid secured a 4-0 victory over WSG Tirol in their one and only pre-season friendly on Tuesday, in what was a significant match for Alvaro Carreras. The young defender, who came from the ranks at La Fabrica, returned to the club from Benfica earlier in the summer, and in Austria, he made his debut. As per RMTV (via Diario AS), Carreras have his reaction to returning to Real Madrid, as well as making his debut against WSG Tirol. 'I'm proud to be here. Finally, the dream is beginning to be lived. It is an honour to be able to wear this shirt again. To continue preparing for what is coming. The truth is that it is very good (to be at Real Madrid). These days training with the team have welcomed me very well. Now, we have to continue preparing to the fullest, because a very nice challenge lies ahead.' Image via Real Madrid Carreras unfazed by shortened pre-season schedule Carreras was also asked about the shortened pre-season scheduled that Real Madrid have had to deal with this summer. 'I'm adapting to what the coach asks. But I see the team very well. We have clear ideas of what we want and the important thing is to win. We have to adapt to the schedules. We had the Club World Cup… Not a problem. It is no excuse. Everything is going to go very well. In the end I don't decide. We are prepared. We still have a week of training left. Winning mentality and clear objectives.' He also spoke on his new head coach Xabi Alonso, as well as teammates Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Dean Huijsen. 'I like him. What we talked about before coming here, the idea he has. Let's go over his ideas. The important thing is that it is clear. 'With teammates like that, football is more beautiful and easier. But I'm very comfortable with everyone: with Vini on the wing, with Dean (Huijsen) at the back… I'm very happy.'

The five biggest non-Premier League summer transfers so far

Premier League teams are again dominating the transfer market with a spend that has dwarfed rival teams across world football. However, some high-profile deals have still been completed elsewhere, and we've ranked the five most lucrative of the summer so far. The five biggest non-Premier League summer transfers so far 5. Alvaro Carreras – Benfica to Real Madrid (€50m) Five years on from his exit, Real Madrid have re-signed academy product Alvaro Carreras in a big-money deal. The Spaniard shone during an 18-month spell at Benfica, whom he had joined after failing to earn a first-team role at Manchester United. Last season, Carreras was named in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year after making 52 appearances for Benfica across all competitions. It's been a rapid rise for the 22-year-old, who was named Preston North End's Young Player of the Year in 2022/23 during a loan spell at Deepdale. 4. Dean Huijsen – Bournemouth to Real Madrid (€62.5m) The second Real Madrid signing to feature on this list. Dean Huijsen was the first marquee mover of the summer window as the Spanish giants beat competition from the Premier League to sign the centre-back. Almost all of England's elite had registered interest in Huijsen, following a superb debut season at Bournemouth. The 20-year-old is nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award after shining on the south coast, where he ranked in the top 10 players in the Premier League for interceptions, clearances and progressive carrying distance. His €62.5m (£50m) release clause was activated in early June. 3. Mateo Retegui – Atalanta to Al-Qadsiah (€68.25m) Al-Qadsiah are responsible for the biggest transfer deal outside of Europe, after the Saudi side spent €68.25m to sign Mateo Retegui from Atalanta. The Italy international was the leading scorer in Serie A last season, scoring 25 league goals, to become the first Atalanta player since Filippo Inzaghi in 1996/97 to win the Capocannoniere. The deal makes Retegui the most expensive Italian footballer of all time. 2. Luis Diaz – Liverpool to Bayern Munich (€70m) Bayern Munich's pursuit of a high-profile left-winger ended at Luis Diaz. The German champions have signed the Colombian from Liverpool for a €70m fee. Diaz was a key part of Liverpool's title success last season, scoring 13 league goals, but declared his interest in an exit after contract talks stalled. He'll now form part of an exciting frontline in Munich, alongside Harry Kane and Michael Olise. 1. Victor Osimhen – Napoli to Galatasaray (€75m) Galatasaray have shattered the Turkish Süper Lig transfer record to sign Victor Osimhen on a permanent deal. Osimhen scored 39 goals in 41 games on loan at Galatasaray last season, setting a new record for an overseas player in Turkish football. The Nigerian international was linked with Saudi Arabia and the Premier League, but has chosen to remain in Istanbul. Galatasaray have agreed an initial €40m fee, with a further €35m in add-ons. Additionally, the Turkish champions cannot sell Osimhen back to another Serie A club for two years. Read – See more – Follow The Football Faithful on Social Media: | | | |

(EPA Images pic) MADRID : Real Madrid signed defender Alvaro Carreras from Benfica on a six-year deal, the Spanish giants said on Monday. The 22-year-old Spanish left-back, who played for Madrid's youth academy before joining Manchester United in 2020, is reported to have cost close to €50 million (US$58 million). 'Real Madrid and Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Alvaro Carreras, who will be under contract with our club for the next six seasons, until 30 June 2031,' said Los Blancos in a statement. The defender played 62 times for Benfica, scoring five goals for the club, including an initial loan spell before they signed him for €6 million from United in 2024. Carreras becomes Madrid's fourth signing of a significant summer rebuild after Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen and Franco Mastantuono, at an estimated cost of around €170 million in transfer fees. After finishing last season without a major trophy, coach Carlo Ancelotti departed and was replaced by Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard steered Madrid to the Club World Cup semi-finals, but they were hammered 4-0 by runners-up Paris St-Germain.

Official: Real Madrid register new signing with La Liga

Real Madrid have successfully registered new signing Alvaro Carreras with La Liga ahead of the 2025/25 season. A former Real Madrid academy trainee, the left-back arrived at the club earlier this month, signing from SL Benfica in a deal worth €50 million. Carreras signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid, committing to the Merengues until the summer of 2031. Set to compete for the starting spot in Xabi Alonso's lineup, the youngster has now been successfully registered with La Liga. Courtesy: La Liga official website Indeed, Carreras' name can now be seen on La Liga's official transfers page for the new season, confirming his registration, while he also appears on the Real Madrid squad list on the league's website. While there are a number of clubs who have had problems with player registration in La Liga due to Financial Fair Play issues, including Barcelona, Real Madrid have not faced any such hurdles. The Spanish capital giants had already registered Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen earlier in the summer and have now done so with Carreras as well. Franco Mastantuono is yet to be registered, although Real Madrid are potentially waiting for him to be officially presented next month before proceeding with the formality.

Real Madrid player holidays: Vinicius Jr's theme park, Bellingham's incognito trip, Huijsen's training sessions

A Bad Bunny concert in Puerto Rico, an incognito trip to London and a team-mate's wedding in Brazil — Real Madrid players have chosen a wide range of holiday destinations this summer. Madrid were knocked out of the Club World Cup semi-finals by Paris Saint-Germain on July 9 and are expected to return to the training ground on August 4, giving them nearly a month to unwind before the start of the new season. Here, The Athletic takes a look at what the players have been up to — and explains some of the considerations that go into a footballer's holiday, with help from the people who organise them. Spain is a popular destination for footballers across Europe, so it is no surprise that so many Madrid stars have chosen not to go abroad for their holidays. New signing Alvaro Carreras decided to spend part of his break in the northern city of Ferrol with his family and group of lifelong friends. He invited them to dinner the day after his €50million (£43.4m/$58.8m) signing from Benfica was finally announced to thank them for their support during the transfer saga. Advertisement Dani Ceballos has also enjoyed time with his family in Seville, while Brahim Diaz was back in his native Malaga for his 'Mentalidad Brahim' football camp for children. Marbella and the Balearic Islands, which include Ibiza, are two of the most popular places for footballers to holiday. Jude Bellingham visited Ibiza before the Club World Cup. Once he had undergone shoulder surgery following the tournament, he decided to spend a few days in London, wearing a coat, hat and glasses to seemingly try to go unnoticed. The England midfielder even had time to visit Barnet's stadium The Hive for a friendly against Wycombe Wanderers, managed by his friend and former Birmingham City youth coach Mike Dodds. Thanks for the support Jude 👋 The England and Real Madrid star popped to the Hive to catch up with an old friend tonight. — Wycombe Wanderers (@wwfcofficial) July 22, 2025 Other Madrid stars, such as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Dean Huijsen, also visited Ibiza after the Club World Cup to enjoy some of the island's famous clubs, including Ushuaia. Young striker Gonzalo Garcia opted for the smaller but equally fashionable island of Formentera, which is not as well known for its nightlife but is a destination favoured by players, including club legend Raul, who Gonzalo has been compared to. Huijsen, who joined from Bournemouth for £50m in May, spent some time back in his hometown of Marbella. He linked up with his fellow new Madrid arrival Trent Alexander-Arnold — who he met at a Marbella club before the Club World Cup — and with his friend and former Juventus team-mate Kenan Yildiz, relaxing on boats and jet skiing. The 20-year-old has also kept working with a personal trainer and carried out some sessions with a ball at the Marbella football centre, where he met up with the Real Madrid Castilla ('B' team) squad managed by the club's former right-back Alvaro Arbeloa. Some players opted not to immediately return to Spain after Madrid's Club World Cup exit. Eduardo Camavinga and Vinicius Junior stayed in New York to take in the sights before going to Brazil, where many of the current squad are from. Along with Rodrygo, they celebrated Eder Militao's wedding and Vinicius Jr's 25th birthday earlier this month. Vinicius Jr even set up his own theme park called 'Baila Vini World' to commemorate the occasion and invited American artists Travis Scott and Chase B. A post shared by Vinicius Jr. ⚡️🇧🇷 (@vinijr) Experts who work in the industry say that Brazil is a favourite destination for footballers, especially Armacao de Buzios, a coastal resort which is a three-hour drive east of Rio de Janeiro. They rank it at the same level as Miami, Mykonos and Saint-Tropez in terms of preferred destinations for players. Most players hire a private concierge agency to manage their trips — involving everything from private jets, hotels and concerts to security, on-site transport and boats — which usually involves a 20 per cent commission. And according to a source who has worked for years with a former Madrid star — speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships — players can spend between €10,000 and €15,000 per day during these trips, depending on the destination and their activities. Advertisement Another source says that private jets can add more than €10,000 to the cost of the trip per day. The players' top priority is confidentiality and privacy, as well as having a contact to help them with any unforeseen events or potential plans. But the most common requests, according to those voices, are luxury cars and sporting activities. Partners of players often request wellness activities within their villas, where there is increasing demand for high-end food experiences without having to travel. Elsewhere this summer, Kylian Mbappe was spotted at a Bad Bunny concert in Puerto Rico with his friend and former PSG team-mate Achraf Hakimi. He cannot claim the squad's most exotic holiday, however. That title probably goes to Ceballos, who, after spending time in Andalusia, visited Soneva, a resort island off the south-west of India. 🫣☀️ Mbappé y Achraf están disfrutando juntos de sus vacaciones viendo en primera fila a Bad Bunny 🐰🎵 🇵🇷 Estuvieron en su concierto en Puerto Rico, también les acompañaba Eladio Carrión 🤯 — MARCA (@marca) July 21, 2025 David Alaba spent a few days in Lake Como in Italy with his family, while new coach Xabi Alonso visited his home province of Gipuzkoa in northern Spain. Part of his family still lives there and he took full advantage of his time there to eat at some of his favourite places, including the renowned Basque restaurant Asador Bedua. But, even if Alonso's players have enjoyed some relaxation, they have continued to train in their spare time. Players tend to bring their personal trainers with them during the final days of the holidays to ensure they start the season in peak physical condition — or to help with their recovery from injury, as is the case with Endrick. The striker is expected to be out for between eight to 10 weeks after suffering a relapse with his hamstring injury and took his personal trainer Vinicius Nevado with him on his honeymoon in Japan. Endrick married model Gabriely Miranda in September but this time held a much bigger ceremony in Madrid. Advertisement That is a reminder of how close the new season is. With Madrid's first La Liga fixture scheduled for August 19 against Osasuna and a new era beginning under Alonso, everybody wants to impress.
