Local authority's Magheramore beach site purchase is win for ‘all who value public access'
The land was originally purchased by Paddy McKillen Jnr, who had plans for a €40 million boutique-style holiday resort and surf school, which faced a lot of local opposition. There were concerns about local access to the beach because the sale involved a gated entrance from the main road to the lands surrounding Magheramore Beach. Wicklow County Council rejected the application in May of 2023. An appeal was submitted to An Bord Pleanála, who also refused planning for the development in February of this year. Cllr Danny Alvey, a founding member of the environmental group ReWild Wicklow, is a frequent user of the beach and has welcomed the fact that the council's purchase of the site will ensure public access to the beach is retained. Cllr Alvey said: 'Magheramore beach is such a beautiful and iconic part of our Wicklow heritage and now it's future has been secured. My family and I have swam there for generations and I have only recently started bringing my own young children there in the summer months. The thought of a new private owner to the road and land surrounding it being able to restrict access was unconscionable. 'I have been very vocal about this over the last few months, along with all our local councillors in the Wicklow Municipal District and TDs, and also the disastrous attempt by the last owner to try develop a luxury resort on this land. I had spoken with our executive team in the council and I knew they agreed this access should remain public and were working hard behind the scenes to purchase the land. 'Thankfully now that work has come to fruition. So many people campaigned and made their voices heard about this, from petitions to Facebook groups and even a recent suggestion of the community doing their own crowd fundraiser.' Cllr Alvey added: 'As well as an idyllic beach, it is a really important site for nature, located adjacent to the Magherabeg SAC and being host to many threatened species of bird. The fact the council now owns the site means it can be carefully managed for nature, whilst balancing access and its recreation value. I'm excited to continue swimming at Magheramore, safe in the knowledge it is now protected for the public and for the generations that will come after us." Deputy John Brady believes that the purchase of the site by the local authority is a victory for public access and also an important step in in protecting an environmentally sensitive and ecologically significant area. He stated: 'This is a landmark moment for the people of Wicklow and for all who value access to our county's outstanding natural heritage.' Deputy Brady was 'disappointed' when the council was outbid for the land at a public auction in 2021, and again earlier this year when it was sold at an auction over the guide-price. 'I voiced my concerns at the time about the growing uncertainty around public access to the beach, particularly with the presence of gated entrances and the potential for private development.' He has commended Wicklow County Council's persistence in finally managing to secure the site. 'The fact that the council remained engaged and ready to act when the successful bidder ultimately did not proceed speaks volumes about their commitment to this issue and to the people of Wicklow,' commented Deputy Brady. 'This is not just a victory for public access — it's a hugely important step in protecting an environmentally sensitive and ecologically significant area. "The land overlooking Magheramore Beach forms part of a wider Special Area of Conservation and National Heritage Area. Its protection is aligned with the goals set out in the County Development Plan, and I am proud to see those ambitions now being realised in a very real and tangible way. "This is a moment to celebrate what can be achieved when public representatives, Council officials, and the community all stand together with a shared goal.'

Under KC, Alvey currently owns both the light heavyweight and heavyweight championship belts. Sam Alvey retains his heavyweight championship belt after a straight right-hand knockout of Tyrone Spong in the second round Ever since the departure from UFC, Sam Alvey has shown a different side of himself inside the fighting ring. The 10-13 record of the fighter during his stay in the UFC had raised a serious series of questions on the fighter's future in a combat career. However, he proved the critics wrong with a strong comeback and, to everyone's surprise, went on to capture two titles in the promotion of Karate Combat. Alvey's bout against Tyrone Spong was the third successful title defense for the fighter. While both fighters took time to settle in during the first round of the combat, it was the second round when Alvey dominated Spong with a left hook first. Spong felt the impact of the hook and was taking a while to shake it off when Alvey approached the fighter with another straight right hand, knocking Spong out. This was one of the most unexpected and shocking outcomes in the history of combat sports . The fans were left stunned and reacted to the massive finish in a rather overwhelming manner. One of the fans wrote, 'That's wild. You just never know in combat sports' Another one wrote, 'I am in utter shock. I can't believe this, SMILIN SAM. How did Spong look before? Is he washed or did he look good?' 'Karate Combat is the best thing to happen Sam Alvey. Karate Combat 54 results: Champ-champ Sam Alvey KOs Tyrone Spong, calls out Eddie Hall
Karate Combat 54 results: Champ-champ Sam Alvey KOs Tyrone Spong, calls out Eddie Hall Sam Alvey retained his Karate Combat heavyweight championship by scoring an upset finish of the always-dangerous Tyrone Spong. SAM ALVEY KNOCKS OUT TYRONE SPONG FOR THE KARATE COMBAT HEAVYWEIGHT BELT 🏆 #KC54 — UFC FIGHT PASS (@UFCFightPass) May 2, 2025 UFC veteran Sam Alvey is living his best life under the Karate Combat banner as a double champion, and he continues to rack up big wins. In the main event of Karate Combat 54 in Dubai, Alvey put his heavyweight championship on the line against dangerous knockout artist Tyrone Spong. Despite entering as a champion, Alvey was a massive underdog at the betting window, but the odds didn't matter. Alvey landed a brutal combination to knock out Spong in the second round. To start the fight, Spong took control of the center of the pit right away, putting pressure on Alvey. Both offered a few range-finders early on, but neither put much power into their offerings as they settled in. Alvey would rip a couple of quick punching combinations before Spong responded with a hard punch to the body, soon followed by a kick to the midsection. The opening round was a feel-out process. Early in the second round, Alvey was poked in the eye accidentally, which caused a pause in the action. After Alvey assured officials was good to continue, he started letting his hands go and connected with a beautiful right hand, followed by a left that sent Spong crashing to the mat. Alvey landed one more follow-up punch, and referee Marc Goddard called a stop to the fight. During his post-fight interview, Alvey called out massive strongman competitor turned MMA fighter, Eddie Hall, who recently defeated Mariusz Pudzianowski at KSW 105 in just 30 seconds. "I am going to kick your ass, respectfully," Alvey said. "You're incredible. I've seen what you're doing. I want a piece." Alvey currently holds the Karate Combat light heavyweight and heavyweight titles. Since exiting the UFC in 2022 after a nine-fight winless streak, Alvey has experienced a career resurgence in karate competition. He improves to 4-0 with one no contest, and aims to actively defend his titles.

ACTC professor is 2025 Eudora Welty Research Fellow
ASHLAND Kyle Alvey, a doctoral student at Purdue University, has been named the 2025 Eudora Welty Research Fellow. Alvey will use archival holdings in the Eudora Welty Collection housed at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to research the life and work of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Alvey, an instructor with the Ashland Community and Technical College system, will use the $5,000 fellowship award to cover his travel, housing and other expenses incurred while conducting his primary Welty research at the William F. Winter Archives and History Building in Jackson. 'Like many American writers, the legacy of Eudora Welty is complex and requires an understanding of contextual layering, looking at aspects of race, gender, class, identity, Southern qualities and more,' Alvey said. 'It is my hope with this fellowship to produce a series of essays fit for publication that focused on around Eudora Welty's short story, 'Where is the Voice Coming From?,' that tells the story of the assassination of Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers from the perspective of the assassin. My focus is the role this story had in her life as a Southern writer and a social activist, as well as in the overall trajectory of the 20th century Civil Rights Movement.' David Pilcher, director of the MDAH Archives and Record Services Division, acknowledged the Eudora Welty Foundation's support of the fellowship program. 'I am certain Kyle will gain valuable insights this summer, making excellent use of digitized Welty Collection materials and extensive paper archives to conduct his research,' Pilcher said, citing that the foundation makes those materials accessible through MDAH. Alvey received a bachelor of arts in English from the University of Kentucky. He is completing a master of arts in history at Marshall University in May 2025. He is starting his PhD in English with a focus in American literature of the 20th and 21st centuries in the fall and states the archival research experience will be an excellent precursor to his advanced studies. The Eudora Welty Collection is the world's finest collection of materials related to Welty and one of the most varied literary collections in the United States. The collection includes manuscripts, letters, photographs, drawings, essays, and film and video footage that spans Welty's entire life. Beginning in 1957, over the course of more than 40 years, Welty donated materials to the department, primarily literary manuscripts and photographs. At her death, her remaining papers were bequeathed to MDAH and included unpublished manuscripts and 14,000 items of correspondence with family, friends, scholars, young writers, and noted writers. The Eudora Welty Collection can be accessed at the William F. Winter Archives and History Building at 200 N. St. in Jackson. The Eudora Welty Digital Archives also features selections of correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and other media related to Welty. For more information on the archival collections or the Eudora Welty Research Fellowship, call Elisabeth Cambonga at (601) 576-6868, or by email at fellowships@

LEBANON, Ill. – Tearful residents in Lebanon, Illinois, are expressing outrage over a recent cleaning at College Hill Cemetery that they say went too far, resulting in the removal of gravesite tributes that had remained on some gravesites for years. In the parking lot outside City Hall, a dumpster held flowers, wreaths and mementos cleared during the recent cemetery cleaning. The city oversees the cemetery's maintenance. Residents addressed the city council, sharing the pain of losing loved ones and the heartache they felt upon visiting gravesites, only to find heartfelt tributes removed. Close Thanks for signing up! Subscribe Now 'There was a little matchbox car my grandson had put there 15 years ago when he was two,' said Connie Alvey, a grandmother who frequently visits College Hill Cemetery. She expressed her distress over the cleaning, which stripped away memorials to her loved ones, including her granddaughter. 'Today would have been my granddaughter's sixth birthday, so it was very hard for me. We don't have her,' Alvey said. 'We don't have anything else to give her other than honoring her by putting things on her grave.' City leaders said notices were published in a local newspaper prior to the cleaning, which was intended to prepare the cemetery for Easter. Some officials apologized on Monday, acknowledging they did not realize the full extent of the heartache the cleanup would cause. One alderman said this was the first year the cleanup work was not outsourced. Another alderman noted the city was following an old ordinance in need of revision. He said the existing ordinance leaves some confusion over what is allowed at gravesites and needs to be updated. Janet Carthy, another heartbroken resident, is devastated over the loss of long-standing tributes from her husband's gravesite. 'I have changed out his flowers for every season for the last six years, and to see them gone is devastating,' Carthy said. Determined to retrieve some of the removed items, Carthy went dumpster diving. She said that those items hold far more than just material value. 'Just feces everywhere': Residents seek answers after sewer backup destroys basements 'They mean everything to me,' Carthy said. 'It's the only way that I have to give something to my husband, to be able to talk to him, to give myself a little peace and comfort.' Elected officials have stated that they will work to amend the old ordinance, which they believe is outdated. Residents, however, expressed frustration over what they called a lack of communication. Alvey said the cleanup resulted in a great deal of pain for those already suffering from the loss of a loved one. 'It just feels like they're being desecrated, and their memories are being dishonored, and it's very hard,' Alvey said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
