#SHOWBIZ: Alya Iman on relationship with Amir Ahnaf: 'We're just friends'

KUALA LUMPUR: "Amir and I are just good friends. There is nothing more." That was the response given by young actress Alya Iman when asked if she was in a romantic relationship with actor Amir Ahnaf. Often seen sharing videos of them together on her social media platforms, it had sparked speculation about them being in a relationship. Alya, 24, insisted that they were just friends and the videos shared were simply to promote 'Pabila Dia Tersenyum', the latest drama they were starring in together. "I deliberately uploaded the moments that we enjoyed together during the filming of this drama and shared them on social media," she said in a recent news report. "Even before this drama, I had shared a video of us together because we have been friends for three years now." While many local entertainment enthusiasts had expressed their 'consent' if the pair were truly romantically involved, Alya said that she may not know what the future holds for her, but at the moment, she is comfortable simply being a friend to Amir. "Love and fate are in God's hands. I don't know if he is my soulmate. The important thing now is that we are just good friends."

#SHOWBIZ: Alya Iman carries on father's legacy

YOUNG actress Alya Iman admits that she had butterflies in her stomach when she first found out that she would be playing one of the lead characters alongside award-winning actor Datuk Rosyam Noor in the horror film 'Susuk Bidadari'. As a newcomer, the 24-year-old actress, whose full name is Nur Alya Iman Azmil, says feeling intimidated and excited would be equally engulfing for anyone in her position when paired up opposite such a formidable name in the local film industry such as Rosyam. Rosyam, as we all know, is not by any means just any cookie cutter actor, but a revered veteran who has accumulated a wealth of experience as well as numerous awards throughout his long and industrious acting career. "When I first found out that I would be acting opposite Datuk Rosyam, I said to myself: 'Oh God, that's scary'. "However, that intimidation, feeling awkward and nervous, quickly faded away after spending some time working with him," she recounts. Rosyam's professional attitude towards his young co-star quickly made her delve into her character seamlessly. "Once I got to know him, he's not at all what I had imagined him to be initially. Apparently, he's a funny person and easy to work with," recounts Alya, who is also the daughter of another legendary actor, the late Azmil Mustapha, who was the star of 1980's box-office hits that include 'Mekanik', 'Ali Setan' and 'Suara Kekasih.' Horror debut While her initial reaction was that of intimidation, Alya says she was over the moon for the opportunity that came her way. "Who wouldn't be? It's Rosyam Nor. I knew that I'd be able to pick up some pointers from him while working on this project," shares Alya. She adds: "He has been generous in sharing some acting knowledge with me when we were filming or just resting in-between scenes. "He also shared some advice on how to become a good actress." Alya says working with experienced players would also allow her to be a better actress. "I had been fortunate enough to be in this project. Acting with experienced actors is an absolute treasure for greenhorns like me. "Being on the set is my actual 'acting classroom'. Those seasoned players are my 'teachers'. As a newbie, we should always take this opportunity to observe how they work. And if you have the chance, there's no harm in asking them questions." According to her, that approach is one of the ways to make the job easier, as well as for others too. In this horror flick, produced by Primeworks Studios and Anomali Media, and directed by Faizal Nadxaman, Alya plays the role of single mother Ayu. Ayu and her mute daughter move into the home of a powerful politician Hadiff (played by Rosyam), only to uncover his dark secrets and involvement with black magic. When her daughter becomes possessed, Alya must fight alongside an unexpected ally to free themselves from Hadiff's evil control. Asked if she had encountered any supernatural encounter during filming, Alya answers the question, with relief written all over her face. "Thankfully, no. If you want to know, I'm a real scaredy-cat. Come to think of it, I have no idea how in the world I said yes to a horror film," she laughs. This project marks her first to star in this genre. Filming took place in Genting Highlands, Gombak and Hulu Langat. "But most of the scenes were shot in Genting. So, we were each given a room at a hotel nearby. And yet, I would drive home everyday because I was too spooked to stay up alone in my room there," admits Alya with a grin. However, despite confessing she's a timid person, Alya admits the character played by her co-star Trisha Ooi is cool, which she wouldn't mind playing such a character if an opportunity presents itself in future.

Menassah's unique methods inspire young readers at SCRF

Steel baskets with tote bags that resemble hot dogs, a bright coloured cup, a soda can, and chips box are strategically placed over the books on display. On closer examination, one finds that the baskets announce the book category – board books, story books etc. The cups and bags are on sale for a modest price as are hoodies and t-shirts with the 'Read, you are in Sharjah' message in Arabic sewn on them. The merchandise gets more interesting at the display refrigerator – pizza boxes with the reading message, soda cans, milk bottles, etc. These boxes quickly attract visitor curiosity. 'We basically want to market the idea of books to kids in a way they will understand. Just as it is important for us to go to the supermarket to buy eggs and milk to build our bodies, we should take care of our brains and feed them using books. Our campaign 'Read, you're in Sharjah' was inspired by the earlier slogan 'Smile, You're in Sharjah'. The book on display in the fridge doesn't have a listed price which is meant to convey that books are priceless. The egg box on display has the caption 'Wisdom eggs with wisdom protein'. This is our unique marketing idea in a festival filled with books,' explained Alya Duaifes, Creative Production Coordinator for Menassah. The pavilion also has a doodle corner where children can use stickers from the Menassah brand to create images of their choice on a board. Monsters, trees and the sun are among the creations that the young visitors have come up with so far. Alya added that any registered member of the Emirates Publishers Association (EPA) will have the opportunity to get their books marketed and sold by Menassah. For SCRF, the books on display cater to a young audience. Occupying pride of place in the Menassah pavilion is a group of children's books that have won the International Award for Arabic Children's Literature instituted by the Sharjah-based UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY) and e&. Taking place from April 23 to May 4 at Expo Centre Sharjah, the 16th edition of SCRF promises an immersive experience under the theme 'Dive into Books'. Organised by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), this year's agenda will feature 133 guests from 70 countries, and 122 Arab and international publishing houses from 22 nations. For Gaza's orphans: Sharjah foundation launches Zakat campaign to save war-traumatised children

A Sharjah-based foundation is calling on UAE residents to support thousands of orphans in Gaza with their Zakat (obligatory charity) and other charitable donations during Ramadan. Contributions starting from $167 (Dh625) will help provide education, healthcare — including psychological support —nutrition, and safe shelter to orphans till they reach the age of 18. 'The situation in Gaza is a pressing humanitarian crisis, with children bearing the heaviest burden of war. As of August 2024, approximately 45,000 children in Gaza are orphaned — a staggering figure that reflects the devastating impact of ongoing conflict. Before the war, 20,000 children had already lost one or both parents, but since October 7, 2023, that number has more than doubled, with 25,000 more children becoming orphans,' Alya Al Musaiebi, director of The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), told Khaleej Times. 'Many now fall under the heartbreaking category of 'Injured Child with No Surviving Family' (WCNSF) — children who, in addition to losing their parents, are suffering from severe injuries with no remaining family to care for them.' TBHF's 'For Gaza' campaign ensures that orphaned and displaced children receive immediate and long-term support. 'The challenges facing Gaza's orphaned children are immense and life-threatening, extending far beyond the grief of losing their families,' said Alya. 'Hunger has become a daily battle, with severe food shortages leaving many children malnourished and struggling to survive. Without shelter, countless children have no safe place to sleep, forced to endure harsh conditions with little protection. Chronic illnesses and injuries remain untreated, as access to medical care is scarce, putting their lives at constant risk.' One major impact is the psychological trauma of war. Many suffer in silence, deprived of essential mental health support. Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. 'Healthcare, particularly psychological support, is a cornerstone of the initiative, as many of these children have witnessed horrors no child should ever experience. Through TBHF's strategic partnership with Tawoon Foundation, orphans will receive critical medical aid and psychological support, ensuring that their mental and emotional well-being is prioritised alongside their physical needs. The programme is designed to replace fear with hope, providing psychological care to help them process their trauma and reclaim their futures with dignity and resilience.' The destruction of schools has disrupted the children's education. Deprived of basic healthcare and psychological care, these children endure 'unimaginable hardship, with no clear path to recovery or stability'. Alya listed the different donation options residents have: $167 (Dh625) provides food, healthcare, and education for one orphan for a month. $2,000 (Dh7,500) sponsors an orphan for a year, giving them stability and security. $10,000 (Dh37,500) offers five years of continuous care. $20,000 (Dh75,000) secures a child's well-being for 10 years. Donations to the 'For Gaza' campaign qualify as Zakat, the official clarified. 'This campaign directly supports orphans, one of the most deserving recipients of Zakat, by providing essential care, food, shelter, and education. Donating to this cause is not only an act of generosity but a religious and humanitarian duty.' Implemented by TBHF in partnership with the Tawoon Foundation, the 'For Gaza campaign aims to provide comprehensive and long-term care for Gaza's orphans. 'Through this collaboration, TBHF is supporting Tawoon's Noor Gaza Orphan Care Program, launched in partnership with Bank of Palestine Group … With $7.1 million already raised, the programme has delivered essential aid to over 11,000 orphans and seeks to raise $377 million to secure sustained support for Gaza's most vulnerable children.' Established in 1983, Taawon is one of the largest non-profit organizations supporting Palestinian communities. WCNSF: Injured Children with No Surviving Family Alya explained that the term 'Injured Children with No Surviving Family' (WCNSF) refers to children in Gaza who have suffered severe injuries and have lost their entire families due to the war, leaving them with no caregivers or support system. 'These children face not only the physical pain of their injuries but also the psychological trauma of losing their loved ones and the uncertainty of their future.' The classification emerged in response to the unprecedented crisis in Gaza following the war that began on October 7, 2023, as the number of orphaned and injured children rose dramatically. Humanitarian organisations and aid agencies began using this term to identify children in dire need of immediate medical attention, psychological support, and long-term care. 'Efforts to address the crisis include specialised interventions through orphan care programmes, psychological rehabilitation, and emergency medical treatment, ensuring these children receive the necessary support to survive, heal, and regain a sense of security,' said Alya.
