Police show up after dad kills son, dog and himself - then find something worse
Police uncovered the bodies of a dad, his 10-year-old son and the family dog inside the home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma - before a search turned up another member of the same family Police attending a home where a dad had killed his son, dog and himself made an even more gruesome discovery when they searched inside the property. Rodney Shippy, 58, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after allegedly killing his 10-year-old son, Logan, in a suspected murder -suicide. Officers also discovered the family dog dead inside the home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma during the search on Wednesday - and soon after located the body of the body of 20-year-old daughter Alyssa, who had not been been seen since November. It was the same house where the childrens' mother Lisa, 41, had tragically taken her life three years earlier. Police have not officially identified the woman found inside the house this week, but relative Patti Williams identified her as Alyssa while speaking to local television station KJRH. Officers had been dispatched to the property after worried out-of-state relatives reported that they had not seen the young woman in several months. They had grown concerned about her and the family's welfare after a video this year showed the home in a state of serious disrepair, with rubbish strewn across multiple rooms. Patti described the conditions there as "not suitable for a child" and said there was "no running water" inside the house. Paying tribute to the two children, she described Logan as "so smart and "eager to learn", and called Alyssa a "bright light in this world". A GoFundMe page has now been set up to cover their funeral costs, and has so far raised $2,300 (£1,700) of a $4,000 (£2,900) target. A statement from Broken Arrow Police Department on Wednesday night said: "Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and neighbours affected by this incident. Anytime a life is lost in our community, especially a child, it is a tragedy. "This afternoon, shortly after 4 PM, officers served a search warrant related to a missing person investigation involving 20-year-old Alyssa Shippy. Her disappearance was recently reported to our department by out-of-state relatives. "Upon entering the residence, officers discovered an adult male with apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds, as well as a juvenile male, and a dog, all dead. Due to the condition of the home, investigators have since located an additional body believed to be an adult female." A later update read: "We can now confirm the adult male found dead inside the house is 58-year-old Rodney Shippy. The juvenile male found dead is his 10-year-old son. We will not be releasing his name. "At this time, the identity of the woman found dead has not been confirmed. The medical examiner will conduct a full investigation to make a positive identification. However, we can confirm, Alyssa Shippy is Rodney's daughter.", *If you're struggling and need to talk, the Samaritans operate a free helpline open 24/7 on 116 123. Alyssa's fight: Parents launch campaign for urgent treatment of rare condition
Somerset Park couple raises funds for daughter diagnosed with MPS I. Image: Supplied A young couple from Somerset Park, KwaZulu-Natal, has launched a desperate effort to secure life-saving treatment for their infant daughter, Alyssa Cas Aldworth, after she was diagnosed with a rare and potentially fatal genetic disorder. Alyssa, born on September 28, 2024, was recently diagnosed with Mucopolysaccharidosis Type 1 (MPS I), a rare condition caused by the absence of the IDUA gene. The gene is responsible for producing an enzyme that breaks down complex sugars in the body. Without treatment, children with MPS I rarely live past the age of ten. Her father, 29-year-old Trysten Aldworth, described the news as devastating. "Hearing that your only daughter has a rare genetic disorder with an extremely high mortality rate has broken us beyond words," he said. "It's something no parent should ever have to hear." Alyssa, affectionately known as Ally, spent her first 10 days in a neonatal intensive care unit due to severe heart and lung complications. Despite initial health setbacks, she has continued to show signs of improvement with regular medical monitoring. The condition requires immediate medical intervention in the form of Enzyme Replacement Therapy (ERT), using a drug called laronidase (Aldurazyme). However, the therapy comes at a steep cost, quoted at R78,064.64 per month, excluding VAT and must be administered weekly for life. Even with ERT, the enzyme cannot cross the blood-brain barrier, limiting its effectiveness in halting neurological damage caused by MPS I. As a result, doctors are urgently considering a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT), a more aggressive treatment aimed at halting disease progression if performed within the first two years of life. The cost of HSCT abroad is estimated between £150,000 and £200,000 (approximately R3.6 million to R4.9 million), though the family hopes to explore a more affordable option within South Africa. A consultation with a haematologist is scheduled this week to assess the feasibility of the treatment locally. Video Player is loading. Aldworth who has been married to his wife Jade for five years, said their community's support has been overwhelming. "In just days, the amount of people who have called, messaged, donated or shared Ally's story has been nothing short of amazing. It's scary, but in the best possible way." Ally's middle name, Cas, honours Jade's late father, Craig Andrew Suttie, who died in July 2023 from cerebral malaria at the age of 47. The family, together since 2013, remains hopeful as they navigate complex medical decisions. "We just want what every parent wants; for our child to be healthy, to live a full life, and one day walk down the aisle," Trysten added. "We're going to do everything in our power to make that possible." IOL News Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel.

Aussie Olympic hero announces ‘super exciting' family news
Australia's NBA champion and Olympic 'rose gold' hero Patty Mills and wife Alyssa have announced they are expecting their first child together. The pair have been together since 2009 when both on the basketball teams at Saint Mary's College of California. But relationship milestones took a back seat to their careers with their wedding only taking place in 2019. The pregnancy announcement included a gender reveal, with the couple looking forward to sharing Mills' Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage with their daughter. ' We were living in Utah at the time up in Park City, and we found out together,' Alyssa told Sports Illustrated. 'We took a test and it was positive. Both of us knew that it was gonna be positive ... I was super excited, but still shocked. 'I knew it was gonna be positive, but I think I was still just shocked because I was so happy.' Alyssa and Patty Mills in Melbourne ahead of the Paris Olympics last year. Credit: Getty Mills, 36, was traded by the Utah Jazz to the Los Angeles Clippers soon afterwards. 'We have been together for so long and we've grown as a couple and we truly are each other's best friends, so doing this with him is really exciting for me,' Alyssa, 34, said. 'I already feel like we're gonna be the best parents because we have fun together, but I just feel like we know who we are, both Patty and I, and so raising our daughter will be super fun for us. 'Our values are so instilled in us that it (will) just be easy to bring her up with the same values.' The pregnancy comes with Mills, who has a permanent home with Alyssa in Hawaii, weighing up his next move in basketball. He is now a free agent and, after suiting up for four different NBA teams in the past two years, has been linked with a return home to Australia to play in the NBL. Mills last featured in the league for the Melbourne Tigers in 2011 during the NBA lockout. But an NBA future is not out of the question, still having considerable pull as a locker-room figure for younger players. Mills won an NBA championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014. He led the Australian Boomers to a breakthrough international medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, scoring 42 points in the medal game and celebrating bronze as 'rose gold'.
