The tiny detail royal fans missed during King Frederik's 57th birthday - so can you spot it?

Danish royal tradition stipulates that a reigning monarch celebrates their birthday with a balcony appearance at Amalienborg Palace. But there was one small detail about King Frederik X's balcony birthday celebration last week that many royal watchers missed – and it was a history defining moment. For his 57th birthday, the King was joined by his wife Queen Mary, his mother and former monarch Queen Margrethe and three of his four children, Princess Isabelle and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent. The King's eldest son Crown Prince Christian missed out on this year's celebration because he's currently undertaking military training. However, another surprise guest was more than happy to step in to Prince Christian's vacant spot on the balcony – one of Danish royal family 's pet dogs. The adorable border collie appeared on the Amalienborg Palace balcony while the royal family were in the midst of waving and greeting crowds of well-wishers. While it may seem like an innocuous royal family moment, the unplanned public appearance in fact made history. The impromptu display was both comical and historical , marking the first time a royal dog - or any pet - has ever made a public appearance on the prestigious palace balcony. The candid reactions and laughter from the six members of the royal family appeared to confirm that the dog's appearance was unplanned. The excitable pooch appeared to enjoy the grandeur of the occasion, even at one point sticking his head out in between the balcony pillars. When the dog first appeared, a surprised Princess Isabelle, 18, demurely leant over to pat the family pet. After instructing the well trained border collie to sit, Prince Vincent, 14, also demonstrated one of the dog's other clever tricks, by getting him to shake hands. The small but significant moment does contain one mystery with royal watchers unable to determine which of the family's dogs crashed the balcony appearance. The Danish royal family currently own two Aussie border collies - a mother named Grace and her daughter named Coco. Because the mother and daughter look so alike, royal pundits have trouble telling the dogs apart. Even Queen Mary herself admitted in an Instagram post shared in August 2024 that it 'can be difficult for some to tell the difference' between their two dogs. The Danish royal family's Instagram post of the King's birthday celebration included this behind the scenes snap of Princess Josephine patting the beloved family pet It's not the only recent appearance by the royal family's border collies at a royal engagement. Last month, King Frederik and Queen Mary brought Grace and Coco to the town of Fredensborg, where they greeted crowds ahead of the royal family's annual summer relocation to Chancellery House at Fredensborg Palace. On that occasion, Grace and Coco joined Mary and Frederik as they walked along the cobblestone streets to shake hands and greet well-wishers. The obedient dogs walked freely without leashes and one even joined the royal couple on the podium during a formal an address to the crowd. The Danish royal family have always had an affinity for dogs and were heartbroken when their previous border collie Ziggy died. In 2017, the family announced the heartbreaking news via their official Instagram page as they bid farewell to the beautiful border bollie. 'The dog has been part of the family for 12 years and was a wedding gift to the royal couple,' the 2017 post read. The 'faithful and loving dog' Ziggy sadly passed away following chronic renal failure and osteoarthritis. Just three months later, the royal family opened their heart to adopt a new puppy. A royal statement at the time revealed that their new dog Grace was 'related to the family's previous dog Ziggy'. A few years later in 2021, Grace gave birth to her own litter of puppies, which included their second dog, Coco. Over the years, Queen Mary has often shared her own personal pictures of all of the family's beloved dogs. The border collies have even featured in several of the Queen's children's official royal birthday portraits. The outdoorsy royal family are also frequently pictured being accompanied by their beloved dogs on walks and hikes. In a post marking International Dog Day last year, Her Majesty shared that 'Grace and Coco have a very special meaning for our entire family'.

The new picture of Queen Mary and King Frederik on his birthday that speaks volumes about their marriage

Queen Mary and King Frederik X of Denmark delighted royal fans with an affectionate display during a balcony appearance on Monday at Amalienborg Palace. Their intimate interaction had royal pundits speculating that it spoke volumes about the current status of the royal's relationship after a rocky two years. The King and Queen were joined by other Danish royal family members for a special balcony appearance in celebration of the King's 57th birthday. But all eyes were on the royal married couple, who only a few weeks ago celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary on 14 May. After standing on the balcony solo to greet and wave to the crowd, King Frederik was joined by Queen Mary, 53, with the couple warmly intertwining their arms around each other. As Queen Mary and King Frederik greeted well-wishers gathered outside the palace, royal watchers noted the happy couple couldn't take their eyes off each another. In particular, the cameras captured the moment when the King and Queen would steal loving glances. An Instagram fan page dedicated to the Aussie-born royal royals was alight with comments about how loved up the King and Queen looked together on the balcony. 'They have a special glow in their gaze,' observed one translated comment. 'Beautiful couple,' stated another. Even as the royals used their free hand to wave to the crowds, Mary and Frederik warmly clung to one another with the other arm, and repeatedly shared intimate looks. In addition, style watchers noted that the couple were perfectly in unison fashion-wise. For his birthday outing, the King donned a navy tailored three-piece suit and dark red tie. Queen Mary coordinated with her husband wearing a teal blue dress by Danish fashion designer Soeren Le Schmidt, which was cinched at the waist with a belt and accessorised with a glamorous Ole Lynggaard brooch. The celebratory occasion also saw the royal couple joined on the balcony by former monarch Queen Margrethe and their children, Princess Isabella, 18, and their 14-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. One of the royal family's pet dogs also made a surprise appearance on the balcony. The latest loved-up display between the King and Queen comes as they continue to emerge strongly from a previously tumultuous period in their marriage. Frederik ascended the throne in January 2024 after his mother Queen Margrethe II abdicated in favour of her son. The historic decision made by Margrethe, 85, came amid rumours of marriage troubles involving the King's personal life. However, since becoming King and Queen, it appears the royal couple have made a concerted effort to work on their marriage and once again present a unified. Indeed, at numerous recent public engagements, Mary and Frederik have appeared warm and affectionate in their interactions, frequently enjoying lingering eye contact moments and sharing physical contact, like embracing and holding hands. A post on the official Danish royal family Instagram account about the occasion explained that it 'is an old tradition for the regent to be celebrated on his birthday with a balcony scene in connection with the big changing of the guard'. 'When the clock struck 12:00, the birthday boy of the day, His Majesty the King, stepped onto the balcony of Frederik VIII's Palace in Amalienborg and waved to the crowd at the castle square along with his family,' the caption read. Unfortunately, the couple's eldest son Crown Prince Christian, 19, was absent from the celebrations due to his current military service commitments. The inclusion of Queen Margrethe in the King's birthday celebrations was also considered especially significant by Danish royal fans. Posting a reply on the royal family's official Instagram account, one fan wrote: 'It simply moves me so much that Queen Margrethe gets to experience this!' 'Seeing [her] son as King and his little family - now on the throne - and being so loved and respected by the people. I don't think Queen Margrethe's smile could be any wider,' they concluded.

Incredible moment Queen Mary's teenager daughter walks up to Amalienborg Palace and rings the doorbell to be let in

Princess Josephine of Denmark has caused a storm on social media after a video was shared showing her entering Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. The youngest daughter of Queen Mary and King Frederik X of Denmark delighted royal fans by casually entering her home like it was any other abode and not a royal residence. Instagram account @copenhagenfrow, which spots famous faces in and around the Danish city, shared the clip to its profile with the caption, 'The princess got FROWED! casually walking into the palace.' The 14-year-old, accompanied by a friend, strolled by the royal guard who was standing outside her home before entering a pin in the door and going through the gate. Josephine cut a chic figure in a pair of oversized blue denim jeans, a white jumper, and a quirky black-and-white striped bag. The original clip quickly gained over 200,000 views. It wasn't long before it was reshared on TikTok. After an account shared the footage on TikTok, viewers took to the comment section to share their thoughts. One said, 'The way they just casually open the door like opening an apartment door. I find it so adorable.' Another thought similarly, adding, 'Ringing the doorbell like it's just any apartment building.' 'To you it's a palace, but to her it's just home,' said a third user in the comment section. A fourth wrote, 'People say she doesn't act like a princess [and] she's just down to earth.' It comes after Denmark's royal household released Princess Isabella's first official gala portraits to mark her 18th birthday last month. The eldest daughter of Queen Mary and King Frederik X of Denmark, who enjoyed multiple events in honour of her birthday, posed for the photographs at Knight's Hall of Frederick VIII's Palace in Amalienborg. Isabella put on a dashing display in a vibrant orange ballgown, which was adorned with the Order of the Elephant and a miniature portrait of her father. The 18-year-old, who opted for a glowing makeup look, added a pair of turquoise and diamond earrings and a matching tiara. The caption read: '18 years ago today Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella was born.' 'The birthday itself is marked with the publication of the Princess's first official gala portraits. 'The princess is photographed in the Knight's Hall of Frederick VIII's Palace in Amalienborg, and on the portraits Her Royal Highness wears the Order of the Elephant with a star chest... and a miniature Order portrait of her father, His Majesty the King.' One day before Isabella's birthday, the Danish Royal Family shared a scrapbook of adorable intimate family pictures. To mark her milestone birthday, the proud parents posted an array of childhood snaps of Isabella and her family throughout various stages of her life. The royal family's Instagram caption read: 'Little glimpses from childhood to 18 years old. 'On the occasion of Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella's 18th birthday on Monday, Their Majesties the King and Queen share here a selection of memories.' These included an adorable snap of Queen Margrethe - who abdicated the Danish throne in January last year - holding her newborn granddaughter shortly after she was born. The former monarch was seen smiling as she looked down at Isabella while cradling her in her arms. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Copenhagen FROW (@copenhagenfrow) Another sweet black and white image also showed a young Isabella smiling as she clutched onto her mother's back. A second endearing photograph showed older sister Isabella touching Mary's baby bump when she was pregnant with twins Josephine and Vincent in 2010. The couple also chose a picture of Isabella - who is called Bella for short in some of the scrapbook captions - and her late grandfather, Prince Henrik of Denmark, who passed away in 2018. The monochrome image showed the Princess wrapping her arms around Henrik, giving him a huge hug. The extensive post also included snaps of Isabella with her Australian Scottish grandparents on Mary's side. Mary's parents are Scottish, but they emigrated to Hobart, Tasmania, where she was born in 1972. Her mother, Henrietta Clark Donaldson, sadly passed in 1997 following complications from a heart surgery when Mary was just 25 years old. Her father, John Dalgleish Donaldson, remarried a British crime writer Susan Horwood, who writes under the name Susan Moody. Elsewhere, another picture showed a young Isabella swimming and spending quality time with her father, King Frederik. Viewers took to the comment section to share their thoughts on the video of Princess Josephine Other images showed Isabella from when was around five years old on family trips in Tisvilde, a seaside town in Denmark, and her feeding a horse - along with more recent snaps of her with the family border collie, Grace. Princess Isabella reportedly enjoyied a private birthday celebration with family and loved ones to mark the occasion. From this year onwards, Princess Isabella will also have her birthday added into the rotation of annual flag days, which are the official dates when the national flag is traditionally flown. In addition to celebrating at the lavish Royal Theatre's Old Stage in Copenhagen last Tuesday, Isabella also had an earlier party on April 11, which, according to Hello, cost a staggering £32,542.
