Cross-country action in Amanzimtoti

THE Amanzimtoti Athletic Club (AAC) held a successful cross-country league programme at Hutchison Park on July 19, hosting athletes from around the province. Young and old runners participated in distances ranging from 1km to 10km. Also read: Umgababa Athletics Club gears up for a promising season AAC captain Warren Gibson said 315 athletes participated in eight races. There had been concerns that the weather might be unfavourable on race day, as it had been raining and cold the previous day. 'The weather played its part, and it didn't rain. Coach Riaan Vosloo and Tronel Nel put together an awesome route for the runners, fast and flat with some soft sand in places. The route was a real tester,' said Gibson. Results: 1km 1. Toti runners commended for beating the Comrades

THE Amanzimtoti Athletic Club (AAC) has congratulated its runners who took part in the Comrades Marathon down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on June 8. Also read: Toti runners ready for the Comrades Out of 32 runners, five were first-time Comrades participants. 'Also, a massive thank you to all the supporters. You've made us proud,' it said. AAC running captain, Warren Gibson, ran and completed his 10th Comrades with a time of 10:10:59. He commended all AAC runners for their good work. 'All but five members finished. The race was hard because you climb out of Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Our first female runner to finish was Lauryn Canderle, and our first male was Ewoud Grobler. Congratulations to everyone,' said Gibson. The men's race was won by Tete Dijana for a third time in four years in 05:25:28, and in the women's race, Gerda Steyn won it for the fourth time in 05:51:19. THIRTY-TWO runners from the Amanzimtoti Athletic Club (AAC) are ready to take on the ultimate human race, the Comrades Marathon, on June 8. Also read: Amanzimtoti athletes share Comrades Marathon experience This year's 'down run' starts in Pietermaritzburg and ends in Durban. AAC captain Warren Gibson said out of the 32, there are five first-time Comrades participants. He wished everyone good luck. 'You have put in the mileage and the time on the legs. Just go out there and do your best,' said Gibson. More than 24 000 runners from around the world signed up for this year's race, and 35 000 spectators are expected to cheer the runners on along the way. eThekwini Municipality indicated that it is ready to co-host this 98th edition of the Comrades and has plans in place to ensure a successful race. Mayor Cyril Xaba said hosting the event will have a direct spend of R275m and GDP contribution of R681m, with 1800 jobs created. 'Hosting such major international events brings us much joy, as it is a strong indication that we are among other international cities known for successfully delivering memorable sporting events. We will continue to leverage on such events as they boost the local economy and drive tourism,' said Xaba. The race will start at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 05:30 and finish 12 hours later at Moses Mabhida Stadium, People's Park in Durban. Motorists and all road users are urged to use alternative routes as roads along the race route will be affected by road closures.
