Sprucing up the environment around Amanzimtoti Sports Centre

HARD work led to heaps of bags full of litter as the Amanzimtoti community came together on Mandela Day (July 18) to spruce up the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre, giving it a much-needed clean sweep ahead of Amanzimtoti Athletics Club's annual cross country league which took place on July 19. Participants rolled up their sleeves for a worthy cause and a cleaner environment. Romy Wenzel of the Clean Surf Project applauded the community's efforts. She explained that the area is in dire need of ongoing restoration. 'Trees and branches are wrapped in plastic with the entire river bed being choked by waste material, including napkins, car parts, glass bottles, household goods and more,' said Wenzel. This is an unfortunate result of recent flooding affecting the area. Wenzel explained that inappropriately discarded waste washes down and either makes its way to the ocean or gets trapped along the way, with Amanzimtoti river and iLanda Wilds being prime examples of this.
