Andhra Pradesh governor launches climate plan, Amaravati plastic-free drive
GUNTUR: Governor S Abdul Nazeer on Tuesday launched the Andhra Pradesh Climate Action Plan and the Amaravati Plastic Free City Campaign, aiming to make Amaravati the country's first single-use plastic-free capital. The Governor, who also serves as president of the Indian Red Cross Society (AP State Branch), called for a united stand against single-use plastics and urged citizens to turn commitment into action for a cleaner, greener State. He announced that one lakh Youth Red Cross volunteers will reach 10 lakh families across Andhra Pradesh to spread awareness about environmental protection and practical steps to reduce plastic use. Guntur has been chosen as the pilot project site by the International Committee of the Red Cross, Geneva. Nazeer said Amaravati's success could serve as a national model for other capitals and major cities. Calling single-use plastics 'a ticking time bomb for the planet,' he appealed to students, youth, and community organisations to lead awareness campaigns, promote eco-friendly alternatives, and ensure responsible waste disposal. He commended the Guntur District Branch of the Indian Red Cross Society and P Ramachandra Raju for their initiative and meticulous planning, lauding the involvement of schools, corporates, and students. About 50,000 students from 500 schools in Guntur are participating in the mission. He urged Vice-Chancellors of all universities to form Red Cross Climate Action Groups in every college and design environment-friendly programmes. The Governor inaugurated a Statewide awareness campaign, directing Red Cross district units to intensify activities.

Governor of Andhra Pradesh and president of Indian Red Cross Society, A.P. State Branch, S. Abdul Nazeer launched the 'A.P. Climate Action Plan and Amaravati Plastic-free City Campaign,' at a programme organised by A.P. Red Cross here on Tuesday (August 12). Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that the 'A.P. Climate Action Plan and Amaravati Plastic Free City Campaign,' was a unique initiative by A.P. Red Cross and lauded the participation of students, Junior Red Cross members, young participants, and volunteers in the campaign. He expressed the confidence that the campaign will be spread across the entire State, through coordinated efforts of all stakeholders. The Governor said that through this campaign, people should be made aware of the ill-effects of excessive use of plastic in our daily life and eliminate the use of single-use plastic by promoting sustainable habits, and protect the environment for future generations. He pointed out that India has a per capita plastic consumption of 11 kg and about 3.5 million metric tonnes of plastic waste is generated annually. He further said that the Goal 13 of the United Nations Sustainable Development calls for urgent action to combat climate change. He appreciated the launch of A.P. Climate Action Campaign with the support of the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), Geneva, Switzerland. Mr. Abdul Nazeer urged the Vice-Chancellors to take up the A.P. Climate Action Campaign in the colleges with the active participation of all students and faculty members. Later, the Governor has administered a Green Pledge by the students. Guntur District Collector S. Nagalakshmi, Red Cross A.P. Chairman Y.D. Rama Rao, general secretary & CEO A.K. Parida, Secretary to Governor M. Hari Jawaharlal, Red Cross treasurer P. Ramachandra Raju, chairman, IRCS Guntur District Branch V. Ravi and other dignitaries attended the programme.
