As we gear up for the 2025 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player's background, recruiting rankings out of high school, and projected role under head coach Mike Elko. Amari Niblack is one of three tight ends brought in to bolster a depleted TE room following offseason departures, whether from expired eligibility or the transfer portal. That left Theo Melin Ohrstrom as the lone returning scholarship tight end. Niblack arrives with a veteran presence and elite athleticism, ideally suited for offensive coordinator Collin Klein's system. Although he hasn't fully lived up to early expectations, he has a prime opportunity to rewrite the narrative. After three seasons, two at Alabama and one at Texas, Niblack has logged 26 receptions for 375 yards and five touchdowns. Depth Chart Outlook The tight end position remains one of mystery. With three transfers joining Ohrstrom, each brings a unique skill set to the room. Niblack, widely considered the most athletic of the group, may have a leg up in the competition, especially if his blocking improves. If he takes that step, the starting job could be his to lose. New Texas A&M TE expected to bring 'an awful lot of value' to the 2025 roster
Texas A&M's 2025 tight end rotation will now include former Alabama and Texas junior Amari Niblack, who, outside of a forgettable 2024 season with the Longhorns, looked like an ascending receiving threat for former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe during his 2023 freshman season. Standing at 6'4" and nearly 250 pounds, Niblack is an elite athlete who should rebound in OC Collin Klein's system. Niblack's impressive speed at his size is similar to that of Texas A&M's freshman wide receiver Jerome Myles, who has reportedly been turning heads this offseason after recovering from a knee injury during his final high school season in 2024. This week, during Texas A&M's appearance at the annual SEC media days, head coach Mike Elko was asked about Niblack's addition to the roster, which has been nationally underrated after reeling in just five receptions for 33 yards with the Longhorns. Wasting players' skill sets is harmful to their future playing prospects, and while Texas HC Steve Sarkisian attempted to turn him into a full-time blocking tight end, Niblack is a hybrid receiver who needs to be utilized in the seam and find openings against zone coverage to provide quarterback Marcel Reed with another target in the passing game. Elko agrees, stating that Niblack will finally be utilized as a hybrid option in Collin Klein's offense. "Amari Niblack is an interesting one because he had spent time with coach Holmon Wiggins at Alabama." "We feel like he's a hybrid kid that adds an awful lot of value with what he can do in the receiving game." The Holmon Wiggins connection is also key, as it is likely that the scheme Alabama ran during the 2023 season has been studied to help let Niblack loose this coming season. Highlights from Texas A&M's 5th preseason practice on Monday night
Texas A&M's fifth practice of the preseason took place on Monday night, as several players, mainly on offense, stood out, including freshman wide receiver Jerome Myles, while starting quarterback Marcel Reed and likely backup signal caller Miles O'Neill worked on 15-to-20-yard passes, both performing above average, which is expected during any practice. Yes, even in the NFL, quarterbacks don't always connect on deep passes, which was the case for both Aggie QBs during the extended throwing session. Still, this was an early throwing session that should not be taken too seriously, knowing that several receivers were jogging at the end of their routes. Moving on, progress has been made, and the position to note from Monday is tight end. While it's predicted that Alabama/Texas transfer TE Amari Niblack will win the starting job due to his receiving ability, we can't out redshirt junior Theo Melin Öhrström, who has continued to progress as a route runner after making several impressive touchdown grabs last season, but was not consistent enough, including dropping a key pass during A&M's 4OT loss to Auburn. Don't forget about freshman TE Kiotti Armstrong, who has already turned heads this preseason. Another tight end transfer that should make an immediate impact in the run game is Nate Boerkircher, who, despite not bringing in a ton of production through the air, could surprise if given the chance. Still, the focus was mainly on the revamped wide receiver room, led by five-star freshman Jerome Myles.
