Amazon Autos Is Selling New And Used Cars That Aren't All Hyundais

Amazon Autos Is Selling New And Used Cars That Aren't All Hyundais originally appeared on Autoblog. A Long Time Coming Nearly nine years ago, this publication reported on a collaboration between Amazon and Hyundai, where the former would deliver the latter's Elantras to customers for short test drives. In November 2023, the pair announced that they would begin selling cars directly to the public on the e-commerce platform, which began in December 2024, and in March this year, Fan Jin, director of Amazon Autos, said that the company was exploring used car sales. Now, the company is ready to dip a toe into the market, and not just with Hyundai cars, either. According to an announcement by Amazon this week, dealers can now list their used vehicle inventory on the site. Amazon Autos Will Be Available Across The Country Amazon says that it has used and certified pre-owned vehicles now available in Los Angeles, with more cities to be added in the coming months, thanks to participating dealers being listed in more than 130 cities across the country. However, customers will only be shown listings available within a 75-mile radius of their location to minimize hassle for them and the dealers they're in contact with. The filter can also be refined to 50- or 25-mile radii. To begin with, customers' choices will be limited to Hyundai dealers, but more are expected to be added soon. The initiative aims to attract customers with the promise of no hidden fees and a comprehensive report of each listed vehicle's history. Customers can also schedule test drives with participating dealerships online, and after purchase, a three-day/300-mile return policy is complemented by a minimum 30-day/1,000-mile limited warranty on each car. What You Can FindHead over to the Amazon Autos website, and you can lease or purchase a Palisade, Kona, Tucson, Santa Fe, Sonata, or just about anything else you could find on a Hyundai website, including EVs (besides the Ioniq 5 N, which will be added soon but can already be purchased used). Jeep, BMW, and Ram vehicles can be found, but oddly, one of the images Amazon Auto used to advertise this new used car marketplace is of a Lada Vesta SW Cross, a Russian-made family car that is not nor ever was sold in America. Weird. Perhaps American-made cars don't look affordable enough. Amazon wants to sell you cars online. Here's what it could mean for shoppers and auto sellers in Canada

Shoppers might soon be able to buy their next set of wheels from the same place they shop for toasters, toys and soap refills as 'the everything store' expands its auto marketplace – a move that could benefit consumers and threaten the existing auto marketplace. Amazon Autos, which launched last December allowing U.S. customers in select regions to purchase new Hyundai HYMTF vehicles, announced Monday it is expanding to include a variety of used and certified preowned vehicles, starting in Los Angeles and then rolling out across the United States within months. Inc. AMZN-Q told The Globe and Mail the company plans to roll out the program internationally in the future, but it declined to provide a timeline. Should Amazon Autos expand into the Canadian market, the move could be a boon for consumers, at least in the short term, by encouraging more competitive pricing and increased transparency while making it harder to sell at exorbitant prices, said Daniel Ross, senior manager of industry insights and residual value strategy at Canadian Black Book. But it would also have disruptive effects in the online vehicle marketplace, benefiting sellers that are willing to work with the retail giant while posing a threat to competing online auto marketplace platforms as well as resellers, and potentially wielding significant influence over consumer behaviour. 'As with any other product Amazon would sell, you would have the capacity [for] just the right size and the volume to probably add a lot of risk to those marketplaces that exist today, whether that's Kijiji in the U.S. or in Canada or AutoTrader in Canada,' said Mr. Ross. 'I think it really makes for a very competitive environment.' Amazon's cloud computing results fail to impress, shares drop in after-market trading AutoTrader and Kijiji did not respond to a request for comment by the deadline. Dan Park, chief executive officer of Clutch Technologies Inc., a major Canadian online car reseller, said he sees Amazon's entry into the space as validation of the shift in consumer expectations. 'Amazon's move into car retail reinforces what we've believed at Clutch since day one: The future of car buying is online,' he said. But he noted a key difference between Clutch and Amazon Autos: While the tech giant still relies on traditional dealerships, Clutch isn't a marketplace. 'We own every car in our inventory,' Mr. Park said. Participating dealerships list new, used and certified preowned vehicles on the Amazon Autos storefront. Customers have the option to filter results while seeing full itemized costs, warranties and vehicle history reports, according to an Aug. 4 news release. The information is standardized and there's no negotiation – what you see is what you pay. Only Hyundai dealers are currently onboarded to the platform, but those dealers can now list used vehicles from any manufacturer – not just Hyundai Motor Co. – and Amazon plans to expand to non-Hyundai dealers soon. Buyers select and purchase their vehicle through Amazon, then pick it up from a dealership. Customers can test drive a car or return it within three days or 300 miles, according to the release. Amazon Autos is currently available in more than 130 U.S. cities for new vehicle sales, while used and certified preowned vehicles are available to customers in Los Angeles. The company plans to expand to cities from coast to coast by the end of the year. Amazon to buy Bee, a San Francisco-based startup focused on AI wearables In the long term, the consequences for other individual dealerships depend on their openness to digital adoption and desire to have their vehicles listed on Amazon, Mr. Ross said. 'Cost competitiveness might decrease some of their profit margin, but if they want to develop a more volume-oriented business, this will lend to that and benefit them.' For some dealers, Amazon could become another avenue for digital retailing. 'It opens the market that much more … it gives them a much larger pool,' said Mr. Ross. 'But it also adds the opportunity for that competitiveness to drop down certain vehicle prices that might be a little bit exorbitant.' While Amazon's service could offer a convenient experience for car shoppers, Mr. Ross warned that the responsibility to ensure that nothing goes wrong may shift more to the consumer rather than dealers and resellers. 'There's a process that's going to be attached to a much greater volume of vehicles,' he said. 'You might have more of an obligation to make sure you've read everything.' If Amazon continues to become a larger player in the auto space, its algorithms could also influence consumer behaviour, such as whether they drive a hybrid or electric vehicle. 'If Amazon says, 'We are proponents for zero-emission vehicles,' or 'We love smaller cars rather than bigger cars,' there could be opportunities to change the consumer buying habit just by what's available on an Amazon marketplace, and their pricing algorithms,' said Mr. Ross.

Amazon uses Lada to promote new auto service

Amazon's latest marketing campaign for its new used-car sales service has inexplicably featured a Russian-made vehicle, the Lada Vesta SW Cross, in one of its promotional images. The campaign promotes Amazon Autos, which now allows customers to purchase used and certified pre-owned cars directly from Los Angeles-area dealerships. The promotional materials use the tagline 'Beep Beep', but one of the images clearly depicts an orange Lada Vesta – a model manufactured by Russia's state-owned AvtoVAZ and never officially sold in the US. The image has quickly drawn attention online, with social media users questioning why the American company is featuring a Russian-made car in its marketing. Commenters have pointed out that the Vesta is largely absent from Western markets and suggested the choice was unusual for a US-focused campaign. Just days earlier, the US Republican Party faced similar scrutiny after posting a photograph intended to promote American manufacturing that included a Soviet-era Lada 1200. The image shows President Donald Trump standing in front of the bright yellow sedan, alongside a caption promoting what the party described as the 'Big Beautiful Bill' to 'bring back the great American car.'The post prompted widespread mockery on social media, with users leaving comments such as 'Make Lada Great Again' and 'Bringing Soviet prosperity to a decaying America.' One wrote, 'I didn't know Lada had a factory in the US. Will there be a new trade deal with Russia next?' Auto analyst Maksim Kadakov has suggested that the designers of the images may have sourced the photographs from European stock image databases to avoid copyright complications with American manufacturers.

Amazon Autos adds CPO, used Hyundai vehicles to its online marketplace

This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: Amazon Autos, the online car buying marketplace of e-commerce giant Amazon, is adding used and certified pre-owned (CPO) Hyundai Motor America vehicles to its platform, the company announced on Monday. Customers will have the option to filter results on Amazon Autos to show either new or used Hyundai vehicles. But all vehicles offered for sale shown will be limited to a 75-mile radius of their location. In addition, all used vehicles sold via Amazon Autos will come with a three-day, 300-mile return policy and a minimum 30-day, 1,000-mile limited warranty. The first online sales of used Hyundai models will be in the Los Angles area, with plans to expand to other U.S. cities in the coming months. Dive Insight: Amazon launched the Amazon Autos online marketplace last December in partnership with Hyundai, which allows customers to purchase a new vehicle online and arrange for pickup at a local dealer of their choice. But the online store previously did not offer used vehicles. The addition of used and CPO vehicles to the Amazon Autos marketplace also allows dealers to sell their non-Hyundai inventory to expand customer buying choices, including vehicles from Ford, Toyota, Nissan, BMW and other brands. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Great Rates and Award-Winning Service Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect 'We think of Amazon Autos as a marketplace where dealers can reach more customers,' said Fan Jin, director and GM of Amazon Autos, in an interview with Automotive Dive. 'We have heard time and again from our customers that it [car buying] is a difficult, complex purchase for them.' Jin said that since the launch of the Amazon Autos marketplace last December, customers have asked for more choices, including purchasing vehicles online from other OEMs. 'The number one ask from all customers is 'can we see more selection?'' said Jin. 'Can we see more other brands of cars, other vehicle conditions, new, used, certified, pre-owned cars.' In addition to offering more buying choices for Hyundai customers, many car shoppers today are seeking a digital car buying experience to avoid high-pressure sales tactics and pressure of buying a car from a dealer in-person. Amazon Autos says its marketplace offers car buyers a seamless e-commerce experience with transparent pricing and no hidden fees. The online marketplace, for example, provides comprehensive information for each listing, including vehicle history reports. Amazon Autos also offers seamless integration with Hyundai dealerships so that customers can more easily arrange for in-person test drives to help address some of the reservations they may have of purchasing a used vehicle online. Amazon Autos is offering what it calls 'acceptance test drives,' allowing prospective buyers to test drive a vehicle before they sign the final purchase paperwork at a Hyundai dealer. 'We have the best of both worlds,' said Jin. 'We're providing dealers with millions of shoppers, local customers, who will see their [Amazon Autos] store, and we're giving those customers really transparent access and ease of access to what's available.' Amazon Autos also vets Hyundai dealers to ensure customers don't have a bad car buying experience. 'It takes a lot of work as we onboard each dealer to configure them for e-commerce,' Jin said. In addition, Hyundai dealers are also required to adhere to Amazon Autos' own requirements for selling vehicles online in order to ensure customer satisfaction and a smooth buying experience. Shoppers can also read reviews of dealers before deciding on a pickup location. 'We look for dealers with high reputation scores, and we hold them to very high standards in how they sell, how they treat their customers,' said Jin. 'We want to give customers peace of mind when they're buying a used car through Amazon that they'll be taken care of.' Jin did not disclose how many Hyundai vehicles were sold via Amazon Autos since its launch in January, but confirmed that the marketplace for new vehicles is now available in 130 U.S. cities, including New York, Boston, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco and other major metropolitan areas. Jin did say, however, that the Amazon Autos car buying experience has received high marks from customers. 'The customer feedback has been off the charts good,' said Jin. 'Customers who transact, who buy their car through Amazon, give customer satisfaction scores, [Net Promoter Scores] that are many times over what the industry average is.' According to a Cox Automotive forecast released in February, a seamless, omnichannel car buying experience combining online and at-dealership activities is essential for succeeding in today's automotive retail market. Cox Automotive also reported earlier this year that car buying satisfaction reached a record high in 2024, driven by more transparent vehicle pricing, as well as the availability of improved digital tools for consumers, which Amazon Autos is providing. "We're excited to be an early participant in Amazon Autos' expansion," said Weslie Metcalf, managing partner of Premier Hyundai in Moreno Valley, California, in the release. 'We believe this collaboration has the potential to help us reach more customers and enhance our online sales process.' Jin added that many U.S. Hyundai dealers have expressed strong interest in being added to the platform, so much so that Amazon Autos has had its own challenges in onboarding new dealer sales partners. But according to Jin, the company is working to address it. 'The second positive for us here is that we have a lot of dealer interest, and really our bottleneck is internal, where we have a bottleneck of onboarding dealers,' said Jin. 'So we're very bullish on the program.' Editor's note: This story has been updated to include additional information provided by Amazon Autos. Participating Hyundai dealerships can also list other pre-owned brands in their inventory for purchase.
