Comedian Aoife Dunne: ‘Coming to terms with my mother's death helped me live closer to life'

Dunne (38), from Kinvara, Co Galway, is set to perform at the Ambassador Theatre in Dublin in September with her show Good Grief, after only a year-and-a-half of gigging. She has recently performed at the Brighton Fringe Festival, with plenty of comedy clubs and storytelling events under her belt. It is a special moment for the self-proclaimed 'talker' who dreamed of being on stage as a child. But, as she put it: 'My life hasn't been just a barrel of laughs.' She has an arts degree and a master's in human rights law and trained in acting until she was 19, but Dunne felt stuck in life for many years after a family tragedy. While backpacking in South America at 23 years old, she received the worst phone call imaginable. Her mother had died suddenly at the age of 53. In a letter she wrote to her younger self, which she incorporates into her shows, she explains that time is the greatest healer. I know how bad it can be and I know how dark things can be 'I know this sounds weird, but Mom dying and me coming to terms with death has helped me live closer to life. And it wasn't this immediate, 'oh my God, life's amazing'. It's hard,' she said. 'When someone tells me they're going through any kind of grief, it's so important to say, this is awful. I think we have this tendency when someone tells you something sad to try to either push it to the side or have this tendency to say, 'don't cry'. 'Those are good things too. But in the moment, it's important to be sad.' Dunne's father had left the family years before, although she has since reconciled with him. ADVERTISEMENT But the single-parent household meant that in her early 20s, she suddenly became the stand-in parent to her two younger brothers and her older sister with an intellectual disability. Her shows are full of laughter as well as stories of her struggles. 'I am so present with things, and I think that's only because I know how bad it can be and I know how dark things can be. And so that's made me understand the lightness even more, she said. A stand-out moment in our chat was when she recalled putting tan on her brother Féidhlim, who was competing in a bodybuilding competition at 19. 'I went to this conference at Limerick University with Féidhlim. And I just walked around, seeing all these grown men and women tanned up to see all their muscles. He looked incredible, my brother really put a lot of work into it,' she said. 'But his bum needs to be tanned beforehand to show up the muscle, so there I am tanning his gluteal muscle thinking OK, this is my life now, and one of my friends who I studied acting with [Nicola Coughlan] is in Bridgerton. 'I didn't realise it's like an All-Ireland hurling final, people stand up and they're screaming. I realise he has no one else here to support him, but I don't necessarily want to be like screaming to my half-naked brother. 'But I also thought how Mom's not here to do it now. So, I jump up shouting 'Come on, Féidhlim'.' I know this sounds strange, but this is destiny Dunne's new tour is about life's absurdities, the mistakes we all make and why the path you're on is the right path. She took hold of her own path at 35 when she started therapy and began focusing on making her dream a reality. Then in 2023, she spoke at a storytelling event before attending a four-day storytelling course in Dún Laoghaire. Opportunities began to snowball from there. 'I posted one of my stories online and then Katie Boyle [a US-based Irish comic] got in touch and asked if I wanted to do a story in New York. After New York, I was asked to do the Galway Comedy Festival,' she said. 'What I say to people is that after that, every time I did something, another door flung open. All I could think was, I know this sounds strange, but this is destiny.' Dunne plays the Ambassador Theatre, Dublin, on September 20, along with Cyprus Avenue, Cork, on September 27 and the Limelight, Belfast, on October 11. She will also be performing at the Galway Arts Festival in July. Check out @aoife_is_never_dunne on Instagram.

Ashley Graham fans divided over 'weird' VS ad where she models sexy lingerie before THROWING her kid on a sofa

has landed a high-profile ad campaign with Victoria's Secret in time for Mother's Day. The campaign has been called Ashley Graham's Mother's Day edits. The 37-year-old brunette bombshell was seen in both black and white lingerie as she was portrayed as an everyday mother. And the New Yorker even used her three children she has with husband of 15 years Justin Ervin as part of the ads. The model and her husband welcomed their first son, Isaac Menelik Giovanni in January 2020. She had twins Malachi and Roman in January 2022. Some people liked this: 'Loveeeee such a realistic relatable shoot' but others thought it was 'weird.' Then there were those who found it odd that she threw one of her children on a sofa during a video: 'Why she throw the baby like that ?!' while another added, ''Wait why did she throw the baby?' But it looked to be good old playful fun and not at all dangerous as Graham smiled after she let go of the little one. Mostly followers talked about how great she looks: 'My queen!'; 'Such a real beauty'; and 'She lost weight.' Pal Lauren Sanchez hit the like button on Ashley's Instagram post. The Mother's Day Edit features stylish looks. According to the lingerie label, 'This thoughtful selection of what moms really want offers versatility and comfort, empowering her to feel confident and sexy no matter where her day takes her.' Compiled in collaboration with Graham, the new range is a 'hand-selected edit of what moms really want.' The lineup features bras to sport sets and sleepwear. 'You can start the day off effortlessly with the Boyfriend Shirt Dress over the Lightly Lined Smooth Demi Bra and Logo Cotton Hiphugger Panty and a pair of your favorite wide leg jeans styled like Ashley in the campaign,' the brand continued. 'For mom's night out after a long day,' cop her the 'Tease Lace Demi Bodysuit with a silk skirt and your favorite pair of heels for an elevated evening look.' The Mother's Day Edit features stylish looks. According to the lingerie label, 'This thoughtful selection of what moms really want offers versatility and comfort, empowering her to feel confident and sexy no matter where her day takes her' Graham has been starring in Chicago. 'It's official. I AM BROADWAY-BOUND!!! I can't believe I'm finally able to share that I'm making my Broadway debut in @chicagomusical! I'll be playing THE Roxie Hart (!!) at the Ambassador Theatre from Tuesday, April 15, through Sunday, May 25—EEEEK!!!' said Graham on Instagram last month. 'Be careful what you wish for, because dreams do come true. See you on Broadway!!! ❤️✨.' Brooke Shields gave advice to Graham ahead of her Broadway debut. The model plays Roxie Hart and Brooke - who starred in Chicago in London and New York City - has been offering advice to the brunette beauty over recent weeks. During an appearance on 'CBS Mornings', Ashley said: 'Brooke Shields has been a beacon of light. She has texted me paragraphs and photos and has been so kind and sweet.' The model actually ran into Brooke, 59, in the bathroom shortly before she auditioned for 'Chicago'. Ashley said: '[I] was like, This is a godsend, for sure.' The runway star - who previously appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue - subsequently shared some of Brooke's advice. She explained: 'She just said, Be yourself. And I was like, What does that mean? But that's what I did, I just was myself in the audition because Roxie really is in all of us. She's the go-getter, she wants to make it to the top, and she'll do anything to get there.' Ashley has also said she was motivated by her critics. She said: 'I have been told no so many times in my career. I've been told that I'm not good enough. All the things. And I'm using that and bringing that to the stage.' Ashley's casting was announced in March, when the model revealed that she was thrilled to be taking on a 'new challenge' in her career. She said in a statement at the time: 'I'm honored to make my Broadway debut as the iconic Roxie Hart. 'I'm deeply grateful to be able to embrace this new challenge and excited to share the stage with this incredible company.' In January, Ashley put on a stunning display as she took to the red carpet at the Golden Globes 2025 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. The model, who was on red carpet hosting duties for fashion bible WWD, looked incredible in a custom gown by Bach Mai on the night. Ashley's deeply plunging dress showed off her ample assets as she posed up a storm in the elegant number before getting to work on the live stream. The American star's dress fanned out into a dramatic skirt and was styled with a pair of diamond drop earrings and strappy heels. Ashley wore her glossy brunette locks in a sleek up do and completed her awards look with a flawless pallet of make-up. Ahead of the ceremony, Ashley told WWD that her dress had been created back in May and she was waiting for the right moment to wear it. Despite opting for a black ensemble, Ashley admitted she loves when stars push the boat out with daring looks on the red carpet. She said: 'I appreciate when somebody steps outside of the obvious shimmer or white and black and really goes for it with a bold color choice. 'That's always my favorite because I feel like, wow, there was intention with this color, and also there has to be a confidence to be able to do it as well.'
