Former Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah signs with 49ers ahead of the 2025 preseason
A former Husker continues his journey through the NFL, joining his fifth team on Thursday. CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz announced that running back Ameer Abdulah is signing with the San Francisco 49ers. Abdullah joins the 49ers after working out with the team this week and spending the 2024 season with the Las Vegas Raiders. Last season, he rushed for 311 yards and two touchdowns while also hauling in 40 catches for 261 yards and three touchdowns. Abdullah played three seasons with the team, totaling 420 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and 84 catches for 603 yards and four touchdowns. A second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2015 NFL Draft, Abdullah played in 141 career games, earning 26 starts with Detroit, the Minnesota Vikings, the Carolina Panthers, and the Raiders. He's tallied 1,994 yards and eight touchdowns in his career. Abdullah now joins the 49ers team roster in a versatile offense after working out with the team on Wednesday. He is now one of five running backs for the 49ers, which include Christian McCaffrey, Isaac Guerendo, Patrick Taylor, and fifth-round rookie Jordan James. At Nebraska, Abdullah rushed for 4,588 yards in his career, trailing only Mike Rozier's school record of 4,780. He did become the first Husker in school history to produce three straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He is also one of just 11 players in FBS history to surpass 7,000 career all-purpose yards. The 49ers begin the 2025 NFL Preseason next Saturday night against the Denver Broncos. 49ers sign former 2nd-round pick RB as Christian McCaffrey injury insurance
The San Francisco 49ers need Christian McCaffrey to be healthy. In order to bounce back from a rough 2024 season, an injury-free campaign from CMC is paramount. Last year, the 49ers struggled all year, and it's in large part because McCaffrey missed almost the entire campaign with two separate and serious injuries. Despite that, San Francisco let its running back depth chart get thinned out this offseason. They traded Jordan Mason to the Vikings. That left second-year back Isaac Guerendo as the main backup to McCaffrey. They also have Patrick Taylor and fifth-round rookie Jordan James. But this week, the 49ers have added to the mix. San Francisco signed Ameer Abdullah, according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. MORE: Joe Burrow shares honest feelings on Trey Hendrickson's contract situation Abdullah is one of the oldest running backs in the league, at 32, but he has a strong pedigree. Abdullah was once a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in 2015. Since then, Abdullah has suited up for the Vikings, Panthers and Raiders after leaving Detroit. Overall, Abdullah has played in 141 NFL games, including 26 starts. Last season with Vegas, Abdullah ran for 311 yards and two touchdowns and caught 40 passes for 261 yards and three more scores. At this point in his career, Abdullah is still an occasional dual-threat out of the backfield. He also has some history with playing on special teams. The 49ers hope they don't need to figure out how much Abdullah has left in the tank, but he's a worthwhile signing at this point in the summer, just in case. 49ers announced slew of roster moves ahead of Thursday's training camp practice
The San Francisco 49ers are resuming their training camp on Thursday at their SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara, California, following a day off on Wednesday. However, before the practice began, the team announced nine roster moves. San Francisco signed running back Ameer Abdullah, quarterback Carter Bradley, wide receiver Marquez Callaway and wide receiver Andy Isabella. Abdullah, 32, earned All-Big Ten honors thrice at Nebraska before the Detroit Lions took him in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft. In his 10 seasons split between Detroit, Minnesota, Carolina and Las Vegas, he's rushed for 1,994 yards and eight touchdowns on 4.0 yards per carry while adding an addition 1,468 yards and 11 scores on 203 receptions. Bradley, 25, spent his collegiate career between Toledo (2018-21) and South Alabama (2022-23), earning All-Sun Belt honors in 2022. He signed with the Las Vegas Raiders as an undrafted free agent last year and spent most of his rookie season on their practice squad. Callaway, 27, was an All-SEC receiver at Tennessee before signing with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2020. In five seasons, he's caught 83 passes for 1,069 yards and seven touchdowns, but he hasn't recorded a reception since 2022. Isabella, 28, was a star at UMass, earning All-American honors his final season. The Arizona Cardinals took him in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft, and between his time with the Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers, he's caught 33 passes for 447 yards and three touchdowns. To make room for these four, San Francisco released Equanimeous St. Brown and waived offensive lineman Sebastian Gutierrez, wide receiver Malik Knowles and safety Jaylen Mahoney. St. Brown, 28, signed with the 49ers just last week after spending his first seven seasons in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. He was fighting for a depth spot. Gutierrez, 27, spent time with the 49ers in 2023 and 2024 but only played three offensive snaps for the team in his two separate stints. He was also fighting for a depth or practice squad spot. Knowles, 24, earned All-Big 12 honors twice at Kansas State before signing with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent. He signed with 49ers in June. Mahoney, 24, signed with San Francisco last year as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt. He appeared in three games, playing 30 snaps (all on special teams) and recording three tackles. San Francisco also activated offensive lineman Ben Bartch from the non-football injury list. He's expected to contend for a starting spot on the offensive line now that he's back at camp. More 49ers: Free agent signing has thoroughly impressed OC Klay Kubiak early in training camp

49ers sign WR Marquez Callaway, QB Carter Bradley
The 49ers announced a number of roster moves on Thursday, including the previously reported additions of running back Ameer Abdullah and wide receiver Andy Isabella. Two other players who tried out alongside Abdullah and Isabella on Wednesday also landed spots on the roster. Wide receiver Marquez Callaway and quarterback Carter Bradley signed with the team. Callaway played two games for the Bucs after making 45 appearances for the Saints over his first four seasons. He had 83 catches for 1,069 yards and seven touchdowns while with New Orleans. Bradley spent last season on the Raiders' practice squad. The 49ers made room for the new arrivals by waiving or releasing wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown, offensive lineman Sebastian Gutierrez, wide receiver Malik Knowles, and safety Jaylen Mahoney. They also activated offensive lineman Ben Bartch off of the non-football injury list.

49ers sign WR Andy Isabella
Running back Ameer Abdullah wasn't the only player to land a job with the 49ers after a Wednesday workout. Video from the team's Thursday practice shows that wide receiver Andy Isabella is in uniform and taking part in the session. Isabella was last in the NFL as a member of the Steelers' practice squad last season. He spent time in the UFL earlier this year. Isabella's last regular season action came in two games with the Bills in 2023. He played two games for the Ravens in 2022 and had 33 catches for 347 yards and three touchdowns in 39 games for the Cardinals. The 49ers are waiting for Brandon Aiyuk to return from a torn ACL and Jauan Jennings has been daling with a calf injury.
