Hagerty CEO Sees Classic Car Market Shifting, Aims to Expand Data-Driven Strategy

⚡️ Read the full article on Motorious As classic car enthusiasts gathered at the 2025 Amelia Concours d'Elegance, Hagerty CEO McKeel Hagerty highlighted a significant shift in collector preferences and laid out plans to position his company as the automotive industry's version of Bloomberg, using data-driven insights to guide the market. The Amelia Concours crowned a rare 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B "Best in Show," underscoring the event's traditional focus on racing heritage. Valued near $20 million, the Alfa exemplifies classic automotive prestige. But even amid celebrations of automotive history, Hagerty noted changes sweeping the collector car marketplace. While blue-chip vintage cars like classic Ferraris have traditionally dominated high-dollar auctions, younger collectors are increasingly drawn to newer classics. Vehicles from the 1970s and '80s, including Porsche sports cars, Mercedes AMG models, and even Japanese performance cars, have surged in popularity and price. "There's definitely room for a classic-focused event like Amelia, much like Pebble Beach out west," Hagerty explained in an interview. "Yet, we also see the market gradually shifting towards newer generations of collectible cars." That transition offers Hagerty a unique opportunity. With its longstanding insurance business and recent expansion into auctions through its Broad Arrow subsidiary, Hagerty is positioned to leverage vast amounts of data. According to Hagerty, becoming a definitive source of market insights, akin to how Bloomberg operates in finance, would help the company guide customers navigating these changing trends. "We want to establish the intellectual high ground in our industry," Hagerty said. "Right now, no single source is recognized as the Bloomberg equivalent for automotive collectors. We can fill that void." Hagerty already provides valuation data through specialized indices like its "Muscle Car Index," which tracks collector car prices. As the market diversifies, the company's data analytics could become indispensable for collectors deciding where to invest. Additionally, Hagerty reported strong financial performance, posting a 20% revenue increase in 2024 and attracting 279,000 new members. The company projects up to 400,000 additional members in 2025, buoyed by a partnership with State Farm Insurance. By 2030, membership could grow by 1.5 million, essentially doubling Hagerty's current size. "The classic car business is evolving quickly," Hagerty concluded. "We must prepare for rapid growth and new directions. Using our data strategically, we'll help collectors make informed choices in an increasingly complex market."

1938 Alfa Romeo 8C and 1967 Lotus 49 Honored at Amelia Concours

⚡️ Read the full article on Motorious A stunning 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 and a groundbreaking 1967 Lotus 49 Formula 1 racer took top honors at the 30th annual Amelia Concours d'Elegance, capturing Best of Show awards among more than 240 distinguished vehicles. The Alfa Romeo 8C 2900, chassis number 412028, was awarded Best of Show in the Concours d'Elegance category. Originally commissioned by Italian racing legend Giuseppe Farina, the vehicle is believed to have been a prototype entry for the prestigious 1938 Mille Miglia. The Alfa features unique specifications distinguishing it from other Sport 8C models, notably a shorter chassis and a distinctive exhaust design. Owner Deborah Keller expressed emotional gratitude following the win, reflecting on her late husband's passion for the event and their shared automotive enthusiasm. Meanwhile, the Best of Show Concours de Sport honor was awarded to the Lotus 49, chassis number 49/2, famous for introducing the Cosworth DFV engine to Formula 1. Driven to victory by racing legends Jimmy Clark, Jackie Oliver, Jo Siffert, and later piloted by Mario Andretti, this specific Lotus has a distinguished race pedigree, including triumphs at Silverstone and Watkins Glen. Owner Chris MacAllister attributed his lifelong passion for racing to watching Clark's triumph at Indianapolis, noting the significance of his Lotus in automotive history. This year's event at The Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island drew an impressive attendance of 17,000 guests, raising $119,000 for local charities and showcasing more than a century of automotive history. Special appearances included four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Hélio Castroneves and actor-turned-racer Patrick Dempsey. McKeel Hagerty, chairman of The Amelia, celebrated the enduring enthusiasm for exceptional automobiles and acknowledged the community's support in making the annual gathering a continued success.

2025 Amelia Concours Overcame Bad Weather for Another Spectacular Show

Sometimes it's going to rain on your parade. But when it does, just move the parade to a different day. That's what organizers of the Amelia Island Concours did and things seem to have worked out just fine. When forecasts for the Sunday concours called for rain—100% it said on all the weather sites, with those little dark cloud images with rain slanting down beneath—it was the best thing to do. This has happened before at Amelia, in 2017 and 2018, and in 2003 a storm forced entrants into the Ritz-Carlton ballroom for an impromptu indoor show. So a Saturday show with a high of 72 degrees and only a few clouds was actually quite nice. This year's Amelia Concours d'Elegance highlighted more than 275 historically significant vehicles in more than 35 classes, including Corvettes at Sebring, Alfa Romeos of the 1930s, and Formula 1 Cars from 1950 to the Present. Indeed, a Formula 1 car took top honors as the Concours de Sport Best in Show. But not just any F1 car. It was Jim Clark's 1967 Lotus 49. It was the first car ever to get the soon-to-be-famous Ford Cosworth DFV V8, the first Grand Prix car to have the engine as a stressed member of the chassis, and one of the few to win its first race right out of the box, with Clark winning the '67 Dutch GP from eighth place on the grid. Plus, the winner had the best quote ever upon winning: 'Blow me down,' said Chris MacAllister, whose name sounds like he might be a fellow Scot to Clark. Best of Show Concours d'Elegance (there are two winners at Amelia, twice the fun!) went to a gorgeous 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Cabriolet, Stabilimenti Farina. Almost everything else scheduled for the weekend went off without a hitch, despite the lost day. RADwood, which is part of the Cars and Community celebration, moved forward as planned because it took place on its own fairway. Concours d'Lemons went off, too, thank gawd. 'Our event was on Friday afternoon, so the date change didn't affect the jointly held Concours d'Lemons or Classic Motorsports Kickoff Party,' said Lemons founder and chief lugnut Alan Galbraith. 'Friday was a stunning, sunny, warm day, and we had droves of spectators and a full field of cars.' Also unaffected by the weather was the Werks Reunion and the auctions, including the newly merged Gooding Christies, as well as Broad Arrow Auctions, owned by event owners Hagerty. A mile south of the concours, Gooding Christie's sold a resounding $67 million with a 93% sell-through rate, including almost $2 million for a 1935 Avions Voisin C25 Aerodyne, $2.3 million for a 1931 Duesenberg Model J Convertible sedan, and $2.5 million for a 1963 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Series II Coupe Aerodinamica. Both a RUF CTR2 and a 959 cleared $2 million. Top seller was a 1955 Ferrari 375 MM Berlinetta that hammered for just under $9.5 million. At the Ritz Carlton, Broad Arrow, the official auction of the concours, sold a 1959 Ferrari 250 California LWB for $9.5 million, a 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV for $4.5 million, and a '54 Jaguar D-Type for $4.3 million. If you include the RM Sotheby's results from the week before at ModaMiami, the total for Florida auctions was $190.3 million. Not a bad start to the year. The rest of the weekend was splendid, too, from Thursday's Reverie party to the jam-packed Friday and Saturday activities. Many car lovers started the week down at ModaMiami then drove up the coast to Amelia. Next up on the big car-lover calendar is the Alfa Romeo Club Car Show at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles March 29. Or maybe Villa d'Este on the shores of Lake Como May 23-25. Or both. See you there.
