Binghamton Bearcats Softball tops America East and heads to NCAA Tournament
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Binghamton Bearcats softball team went into the America East Tournament as the #1 seed, having not lost a game, and they didn't disappoint. In the second round, following a first-round BYE, the team knocked off Bryant in nine innings, then met up with UMBC. The Bearcats took down the Retrievers and then faced off with the Bulldogs once again, whom they topped 10-3, and became the America East Champions. The Bearcats are now heading to the NCAA Tournament. They have one of the longest trips, playing in the Eugene Regional in Oregon, facing the Stanford Cardinal. The other two teams in the Regional are the Oregon Ducks, the hosts, and the Weber State Wildcats. This is the first time Binghamton has made it to the NCAA Tournament since 2015. The team will make their way west on Wednesday and prepare to open up their Regional play at 5 p.m. on Friday. The game will be streamed on ESPN+. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Local high school band reunites after 50 years for special show
WEST WINDSOR, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Some local musicians are turning back the clock five decades by reuniting their high school band for a gig this weekend. Dagger is currently a 10-piece band that was rehearsing at Newclear Studios in West Windsor today. The band is made up of three guitarists, Doug Kay, Michael Husted, and Michael McClain, lead singer Rick Holly, bassist Bill Eno, keyboardist Ted Brainard, drummer Mike Ricciardi, percussionist Larry Ricciardi, and backup singers Ann Eno and Mallory Evans. The group originally played together, starting when they were in high school from 1972 to 1978. During the COVID pandemic, longtime friend and supporter Phil Courtright suggested that they reunite online. Soon after, they started sharing lyrics and music for new songs, with each musician recording their part separately. A few of the members have left the area, so once the pandemic was over, they decided to get together in person for a reunion show in October 2023. Mike Ricciardi says what happened next was magical. 'To find that kind of a unit where everybody's family again, I've only found one more time. I was fortunate to find that, but it started here, this bunch of guys is the one that set the tone for everything. Just to answer your question, it's been an incredible experience. I feel incredibly lucky,' Ricciardi said. The band had five members in the 70's and played mostly high school dances until they were old enough to play out at bars. Their focus was always on originals, and they even released a 45 that got some local radio airplay. Today, they're still writing new material, with 30 new songs since they reunited. Kay says that although they can't get together often, the band is still looking forward. 'Nothing has been planned. We just kind of got together and the music itself, the songs gave us life. And I think that's why we eventually want to record and get it out so that other people can hear it,' Kay said. The band's second reunion show returns to Ransom Steele Tavern in Apalachin for the bar's last weekend before closing down. The show is tomorrow at 7:30 and they won't be charging a cover or playing any covers. In fact, they may even roll out a couple of their old originals to complement the new stuff. Binghamton Bearcats Softball prepares for AE Tournament; Sweep Conference Honors
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – After being co-regular season champs last season and coming up short of the America East Championship, the Binghamton Bearcats Softball team dominated the competition this season, going 16-2 in the AE, and head into the tournament as the 1 seed. The team went 33-12 in the regular season and currently sits on a 7-game win streak. They are 9-1 at home, with their only loss at the Sports Complex being to out-of-conference Cornell. The team's conference losses came to the 2 seed, UMBC, in late March. They kick off their America East Tournament run on Thursday at 11 am, as they have a first-round bye, where they'll either face Bryant or UMass Lowell, which will be found out on Wednesday. 'I think that we knew right from the start of the fall that this was going to be a special team,' said Head Coach Jess Bump. 'They followed through and did everything that we were expecting them to do.' The tournament is hosted at the Bearcats Softball Complex. After the America East released the all-conference teams for 2025 on Tuesday afternoon, it was all headlined by Binghamton. Sophomore catcher and Groton native Elisa Allen was named Player of the Year in the conference. Junior Brianna Roberts got the nod for Pitcher of the Year. Rookie of the year was given to freshman Rachel Carey, and Head Coach Jess Bump repeated as Coach of the Year. The Bearcats are the first softball program in the America East ever to sweep all four major awards outright. In addition, Binghamton posted a conference-record seven first-team selections and nine overall picks. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Nikola Priede's 20 points help Vermont women beat Albany 62-55 for the America East tourney title
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Nikola Priede scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help No. 2 seed Vermont beat top-seeded Albany 62-55 on Friday night in the championship game of the America East Tournament. Vermont and Albany entered with seven America East championships apiece, tied for second all-time behind Maine with 10. It was Vermont's second title over the last 15 years, with the last coming in 2023 against the Great Danes. Vermont (21-12), appearing in its third consecutive championship game, improved to 7-2 against Albany since the start of the 2022-23 season. Albany (26-6) had won seven straight heading into the championship, with its last loss coming to Vermont on Feb. 8. The Great Danes lost at home for the first time this season. Vermont went ahead 55-46 after Keira Hanson made a 3-pointer and Anna Olson followed with a shot in the lane on the next possession with 3:12 remaining. Albany grabbed two offensive rebounds after missed 3-pointers and America East player of the year Kayla Cooper was fouled with 1:12 remaining before she missed two free throws to keep Vermont's lead at 60-53. The Catamounts added a fast-break layup by Priede with 40.3 seconds left for a nine-point lead. Catherine Gilwee added 12 points for Vermont and Olson had 11. Cooper finished with 18 points and Jessica Tomasetti added 14 for Albany, which earned its third trip in the last four year to the championship with a 49-41 comeback victory over Maine. ___
