'Challenging year': Princess Beatrice breaks silence on Duchess Sarah Ferguson's 'resilience' amid cancer battle and Prince Andrew downfall
Princess Beatrice has spoken publicly for the first time about the divorce of her parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, and how the experience shaped their family- particularly her mother. The Duke and Duchess of York were married for a decade, from 1986 to 1996, but have remained unusually close in the years since, continuing to live together at Royal Lodge on the Windsor Estate. Despite Prince Andrew's fall from grace following his associations with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and a separate scandal involving an alleged Chinese spy, Sarah "Fergie" Ferguson has remained one of his most loyal supporters. More recently, the tragic death of American-Australian Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre, who received a multi-million dollar settlement from Prince Andrew in 2022, has cast a renewed spotlight on the Duke, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing. His royal titles were removed by the late Queen Elizabeth following the controversy. Now, in a revealing podcast appearance, Beatrice, 36, has spoken alongside her younger sister Princess Eugenie, 35, about how their mother helped them navigate the turbulent times during and after their parents' separation. The royal sisters participated in a podcast called "Lessons From Our Mothers," hosted by their friend Cressida Bonas, who is also a former flame of their cousin Prince Harry, along with her half-sister Isabella Branson. During the episode, they reflected on their childhood and shared the resilience they have observed in their mother over the years. "The more I get to know her in her life, the more incredible this woman is becoming," Beatrice said of Fergie. "As a mum, she is completely effervescent in her ability to bring joy, and she has an overwhelming sense of just turning up no matter what's happening or where she's going or what she's doing, she just turns up it's such a beautiful thing." She added that this strength has been even more poignant "especially because of what she's been through in the past year". In addition to coping with her estranged ex-husband's scandals and subsequent exclusion from the royal family, the Duchess has recently fought both breast cancer and malignant melanoma. Beatrice praised their mother's spirit, saying she "always found the adventure" even in difficult times. "There was always an adventure to be had, and now it's so fun reflecting and looking back to say some of the harder times, through divorce, and through challenging moments, there was always an adventure," she said. "She had an ability to jump into things with two feet". Cressida noted that Ferguson appears to "wear her heart on her sleeve" prompting Eugenie to respond: "I definitely think she would say if she was on this (podcast) that she has learnt the hard way to be like that." Beatrice added: "She doesn't wear her heart on her sleeve, she wears it top to toe. She is a heart that walks into a room. "And as Euge rightly pointed out, that heart has been there since she was 15 years old." The mother of two noted that over the years, Fergie struggled to "fit into the room", but now in her 60s, the "room is changing to fit her". "Euge is completely right when she said she's learnt the hard way- but now, having the grace and beauty to be that heart, we're seeing that change, and I think she's getting the response of that," Beatrice said. "Because no matter what she's been through, she's always authentic." The sisters' glowing praise comes just weeks after Buckingham Palace appeared to snub their parents during the Easter Matins service at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. Official palace photos shared from the day conspicuously excluded Andrew and Sarah, even managing to crop them out of images featuring Beatrice and Eugenie, who were pictured without their parents just inches away. Both Beatrice and Eugenie are now mothers themselves. Beatrice shares daughters Sienna, three, and newborn Athena, along with stepson Wolfie, nine, with husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Eugenie shares sons August, four, and Ernest, two, with husband Jack Brooksbank.
