BU presents American Civic Association with Sigma Award
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – As the school year winds down, one of Binghamton University's departments held its annual awards ceremony, including special recognition for a community partner. The American Civic Association was the recipient of the Sigma Award from the Public Administration and Policy Department for its lifetime of public service to Greater Binghamton. The ACA regularly utilizes interns from the Master's in Public Administration program giving them real world experience in grant writing, immigration policy and other government work. Executive Director Hussein Adams credited his staff in accepting the award on behalf of the organization. Adams says his staff members regularly make presentations to MPA classes. And he says the ACA benefits from the diversity of the BU students, many of whom are familiar with foreign languages and cultures. 'We're fortunate enough to be able to utilize their services, their skills, their intelligence and young brains to help the organization as an intern, same thing with our volunteers. So, Binghamton University is definitely a great partner,' said Adams. Adams says community support is more vital than ever, given that it has recently lost some federal funding. The school also presented awards to students and alumni. American Civic Association's annual All Nation's Parade and Festival
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The ACA's biggest event of the year is happening this weekend, with dancers, music, food, and handmade works of art. Tomorrow is the American Civic Association's annual All Nation's Parade and Festival starting at Binghamton City Hall at 11 a.m. Local volunteers decorated the front lobby of the ACA with colorful, hooked tapestries that all spell the word 'hello' in five different languages. The Vice President of the group, Paulette Hackman, says the five languages include Ukrainian, French, Spanish, English and Arabic. 'The languages, as I explained before, were the ones we were told were their most often heard and used. And the reason we came up with hello was, we wanted to put across a greeting to people coming here. We all come from other countries originally,' Hackman said. She says each rug takes a couple of days to make, and they use wool or fabrics from old clothing. The tapestries are hanging in the main lobby, so anyone who enters the building is greeted with five different hellos. Everyone is invited to participate in tomorrow's parade and festival, and the ACA encourages people to express their culture with a festive dance, banner, or whatever they want. ACA launches rebrand with help of former client
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – In what's being described as a full circle moment, the American Civic Association is receiving help from an industry professional it helped to get on her feet. The ACA has a new brand and website courtesy of Idea Kraft. The local design firm was founded by Creative Director Ewelina Zajac-Holdrege. Back in 2004, she was a recent immigrant from Poland and in graduate school. Zajac-Holdrege says the American Civic Association helped her with her legal path to citizenship. Now, she's helped to provide a whole new look for the organization at a discounted price as a way to pay them back. 'They helped me with a green card, work authorization. I was just graduating without any financial resources, didn't know anyone and they were very kind and welcoming and helped me really to get my life started here,' said Zajac-Holdrege. Idea Kraft helped the ACA to develop a visual identity with new branding and messaging. They created a new logo and new interactive website. ACA Executive Director Hussein Adams says the old website was outdated and didn't properly reflect the services the organization offers for newcomers. Adams says that at a time when the immigration and refugee landscape is changing at the federal level, it's critical to provide accurate and up-to-date information for new arrivals. 'It's important to make sure that the community is fully up to date in regard to our challenges, in regard to the need for the support of the community,' said Adams. Adams says the old ACA logo featuring the Statue of Liberty became problematic because it gave the false impression that the non-profit was a governmental agency. Adams says many immigrants are fleeing persecution and are suspicious of any form of government. Idea Kraft also helped the ACA come up with a new slogan: When new Americans thrive, we all thrive.
