No. 7 Georgia blasts Binghamton 20-4 in Athens Regional opening game The Georgia Bulldogs started the Athens Regional with a bang. After a 3 1/2 hour weather delay, No. 7 Georgia (43-15) beat American East champion Binghamton (29-25) by a score of 20-4. Georgia scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back. Binghamton scored two runs off of two singles in the top of the third, but the Bulldogs countered with fifteen unanswered runs in the next five innings. Binghamton scored two more runs on two doubles to reach the final score. Georgia outhit Binghamton 15-6, with four doubles and five home runs. Sophomore first baseman Tre Phelps and sophomore catcher Daniel Jackson each had two home runs. The duo finished with 11 of the 20 RBIs Georgia scored. Junior shortstop Kolby Branch also went 4-4 with a double and two RBIs. In the pitching staff, junior starter Leighton Finley pitched for 6 2/3 innings. He earned seven strikeouts, only allowing a walk, four hits, and two runs. Georgia baseball head coach Wes Johnson praised Finley's start. "I thought Leighton (Finley) came out today and really set the tone in the first. He was attacking the strike zone. When guys can set the tone like that, it calms down everyone in the dugout," said Johnson. Sophomore Zach Brown finished the job, pitching 2 1/3 innings and giving up two runs on two hits and two walks. On Saturday, Georgia faces the Duke Blue Devils (38-19), who won against Oklahoma State 12-5. The game will be televised on SEC Network at 6:00 p.m. ET. What to know about Georgia baseball's NCAA Tournament opponent Binghamton The Georgia Bulldogs (42-15, 18-12) open the NCAA Tournament at the friendly confines of Foley Field in the Athens Regional against the Binghamton Bearcats. Binghamton (29-24, 13-11) won the American East conference championship in extra innings against the Bryant Bulldogs. Binghamton, who is 8-3 over their last 11 games, is the No. 4 seed in the Athens Regional. Georgia is the No. 1 seed in the Athens Regional and the No. 7 national seed. The Bulldogs are expected to beat Bignhamton, but anything can happen in just one game. Georgia leads the nation in home runs with 133 and has an elite offense. Binghamton has drawn 257 walks this season (No. 131 in the nation), so Georgia's pitching staff will need to stay in control and avoid walks. Binghamton does an excellent job of getting on base. The Bearcats have a .294 batting average this season, which is No. 72 in the country. Binghamton's on base percentage of .401 (No. 76 in the country) is not far behind Georgia, who has an on base percentage of .409 (No. 47 in the country). Of course, Binghamton did not face the grind of SEC baseball, but they did play one SEC opponent. Binghamton split a four game series at Missouri earlier this year, but Missouri (16-39, 3-27 in SEC) had an awful season and was the worst team in the SEC. Georgia swept Missouri on the road in a three game series in early May. Binghamton does not have an ace starter, so we'd expect for them to start one of their better left handed pitchers against Georgia since lefties have given the Dawgs some trouble this season. The Bearcats don't have a pitcher with an ERA under 4.90 that has made more than five starts this season. We project Binghamton to pitch a bullpen game against Georgia. Binghamton's opponents have actually outscored them this season 385 to 344. They face a Georgia team that has 477 runs in 57 games, which ranks No. 22 in the country. The Bulldogs have an offensive juggernaut that could dominate Binghamton, but if the Bearcats can get players on base and hit with runners in scoring position, then this could end up being a tight game. Binghamton is just 11-17 on the road this season while Georgia has lost only four home games all year, so they face a significant challenge at Foley Field. "All 16 regional sites are filled with great hosts but Georgia is a special place," long-time Binghamton coach Tim Sinicki said. "They have such a great tradition, having won national championships and being regulars not just in the NCAA tournament but with trips to Omaha. Coming out of the SEC you know they will be a quality ball club. We're excited. Athens is a great college town and it will be a great environment. I know our players and staff are looking forward to heading down there Wednesday." TV, schedule for Georgia-Binghamton game The Georgia-Binghamton game will be at noon ET on Friday, May 30. The game will be televised on SEC Network. The winner of the Georgia versus Binghamton game will play against the winner of Duke versus Oklahoma State on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. ET (television to be announced). Georgia rose two spots in the poll, but was eliminated from the SEC Baseball Tournament in their first game against Oklahoma. Georgia is the No. 7 national seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs will host the Athens Regional and if they win the regional, then Georgia will host the Athens Super Regional. The Athens Regional starts on Friday, May 30. Record: 28-23, 15-12 in Big 12 Away record: 5-12 (5-5 neutral) RPI: No. 44 Oklahoma State was one of the better teams in the Big 12 this spring. The Cowboys won the Big 12 Tournament in 2024 and hosted a regional last year, so Oklahoma State has a lot of NCAA Tournament experience on its roster. Oklahoma State left-handed pitcher Harrison Bodendorf was named first-team All-Big and was named as the conference's co-newcomer of the year. 4. Binghamton Bearcats Record: 29-24, 13-11 in American East Away record: 11-17 (5-1 neutral) RPI: No. 163 Binghamton baseball won the American East over the Bryant Bulldogs in extra innings. Binghamton is 8-3 over their last 11 games and enters the Athens Regional with some serious momentum. "All year long I wasn't sure how good this team was, but I knew we had tremendous spirit and fight," said Binghamton manager Tim Sinicki. "Yes we are talented, but we always found ways to win ball games and never gave up. I'm so proud of the kids. It's been a long week in beautiful Maine, but we're happy to be coming home with a championship." Notably, Binghamton split (2-2) a series at Missouri earlier this year, so they do have experience against SEC foes. However, Missouri (16-39, 3-27 in SEC) had an awful season and was by far the worst team in the SEC. Georgia swept Missouri (3-0) in early May. St. Pete officials approve $22.5M to replace Tropicana Field roof
April 4 - The city council in St. Petersburg, Fla., voted Thursday to replace the roof of Tropicana Field, which was destroyed in October by Hurricane Milton. St. Petersburg owns the ballpark and is contractually obligated to provide the Tampa Bay Rays with a playable home. The new Teflon-coated fiberglass roof will cost the city $22.5 million. The council voted 7-1 in favor of the project. "I'd much rather be spending that money on hurricane recovery and helping residents in our most affected neighborhoods," council member Brandi Gabbard told the Tampa Bay Times, "but this is our obligation." The Rays are expected to return to the indoor facility for the 2026 season. The damages to Tropicana Field came amid a longstanding tussle between Rays ownership and local government over the future of the club in the Tampa Bay area. The Rays wanted to build a new ballpark that would cost $1.3 billion, and local officials had approved the sale of bonds to pay for their share, but the Rays could not move forward because of the project's shifted timeline and cost overruns. The Rays are playing the 2025 season in George M. Steinbrenner Field, the spring training home of the American East rival New York Yankees.
