Not Every Team Deserves a Netflix Sports Documentary

Last season the Boston Red Sox were the picture of mediocrity, finishing 81-81, dead middle of the American League East Division, and failing to make the playoffs. The Red Sox were expected to be meh, and they were. So my expectations for The Clubhouse: A Year With the Red Sox, an eight-episode docuseries released by Netflix Inc. in April, were low. The idea of spending eight hours rehashing their humdrum season sounded like a chore, even for this Sox fan. At first glance, The Clubhouse seemed like another unnecessary sports doc. Since the breakout success of Formula 1: Drive to Survive and The Last Dance, both of which helped fill the void when most live sports were canceled during the early days of the pandemic, programmers have been clamoring for unscripted sports series. At the start of 2019, according to data from Ampere Analysis, sports accounted for 3% of all newly commissioned documentaries, both upcoming and released. So far in the second quarter of this year, that share is 12%.

Javier Baez's Walk-Off Home Run Thrills Fans in Tigers' Win Over Red Sox

The Detroit Tigers defeated the Boston Red Sox in thrilling fashion on Tuesday night as they defeated Joey Cora's team in extra innings. Javier Baez set things off with a three-run home run that gave the Tigers the lead earlier in the game before finishing things off with a walk-off home run that sent the Comerica Park crowd into a frenzy. Advertisement Baez has regained the form that once made him a threat to make the MLB All-Star team each season before injuries and ineffectiveness nearly got him a pink slip with general manager Jeff Greenberg's franchise. Baez got a four-word message from the Tigers' social media account that fans likely won't soon forget. Baez tied designated hitter Kerry Carpenter and right fielder Zach McKinstry with two hits on the night as the Tigers improved their record to 28-15 on the season, first place in the American League Central. Advertisement The Red Sox fell to 22-22, three games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East Division. Baez has compiled six multi-hit games in the month of May out of nine games played heading into Wednesday's 6:40 p.m. first pitch against the Red Sox. Baez entered Tuesday night's game hitting .353 for the month, sparking talk of a potential Comeback Player of the Year Award in the Motor City for the former Chicago Cubs and New York Mets star. Cedric Mullins, Baltimore Orioles Await Challenge From Minnesota Twins

It's been a tough start to the 2025 MLB season for the Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins. Both teams already have 20 losses early in May schedule. Baltimore and Minnesota can change their courses when they square off in a three-game series at Target Field starting on Tuesday. Baltimore, which has gone 2-3 in its last five games, sits in last place in the American League East Division at 13-20. As for Minnesota, the Twins are 15-20 and already seven games behind in the AL Central. They would be in last place if not for the hapless Chicago White Sox. Mullins is catalyst on offense for O's The Orioles hope Cedric Mullins continues to deliver at the plate. Entering Tuesday's opener, Mullins leads the Orioles with seven home runs and 21 RBI, according to StatMuse. He hit one of Baltimore's four homers on Sunday against the Kansas City Royals at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. He's hitting at a .255 clip with an OBP of .379. Ryan O'Hearn has the top batting average for Baltimore at .307. Advertisement Young phenom Jackson Holliday had himself a day in the Orioles' 11-7 loss against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. Holliday hit two solo home runs, marking his first multi-homer game in his career. Baltimore would not mind seeing Holliday's power surge continue against the Twins. Minnesota's offense has been paced by Byron Buxton's seven homers and Ty France's 19 RBI. Harrison Bader tops the Twins with a .280 batting average. Just like the Orioles, the Twins have gone 2-3 in their last five games. Bailey Ober, Joe Ryan and Pablo López pace the Minnesota pitching staff. Pitching probables for Tuesday's series opener are right-hander Dean Kremer (3-4, 5.73 ERA) opposite the Twins' Ryan (2-2, 2.93 ERA). Baltimore's pitching staff has been decimated by injuries, so any length that Kremer can give Orioles manager Brandon Hyde probably will be appreciated.

Toronto Blue Jays GM Atkins feels club is in an ‘OK' position

TORONTO – He might be the Toronto Blue Jays general manager but Ross Atkins understands the prominence hockey has within the city's sports landscape. Atkins held court with reporters for 19 minutes before Toronto's series opener with the Cleveland Guardians on Friday at Rogers Centre. He concluded the session by stating, 'How about the Maple Leafs.' The Leafs earned a 4-2 road win over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night to win their opening-round playoff series in six games. Toronto is through to the second round for just the second time in more than two decades, which has somewhat concealed the Blue Jays' middling start in 2025. After winning back-to-back games against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday and Thursday, Toronto (15-16) sits third in the American League East Division with the same record it had after 31 games a year ago. Atkins, in his 10th season at the Blue Jays' helm, had plenty of excuses for his middle-of-the-road club, including a challenging early schedule and fresh additions to the roster adjusting to their new surroundings. 'I feel like we're in an OK position and we've had a lot of good signs,' Atkins said. 'We've had some good starting pitching efforts, we've had good signs out of our bullpen and some encouraging signs (with) our offence the last couple of days. 'We'd obviously like to be at the top of the division but we feel given our schedule at the start of the year and some transitions on to the team, that's a fine spot to be in.' The Blue Jays also were without Gold Glove outfielder Daulton Varsho until his return Tuesday. He hit home runs Wednesday and Thursday. But Atkins can't ignore the Blue Jays rank 22nd out of 30 major-league teams in earned-run average (4.24) and 29th in home runs (21). Only the Kansas City Royals have hit fewer with 15. Max Scherzer, one of the newcomers, has yet to pitch for Toronto because of a thumb injury. He's made strides in the last 10 days. 'We're not talking about months,' Atkins said. 'We're talking about weeks.' Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. New reliever Jeff Hoffman has been the most impressive of the newcomers. But outfielder Anthony Santander and second baseman Andreas Gimenez have suffered slow starts. In the meantime, Atkins claimed he's looking at the free-agent market to bolster his pitching staff. 'We have a couple of things in the works there that are more on the depth front, via free agency,' Atkins said. Other pitching possibilities could arrive from the Blue Jays minor system. Atkins has his eye on 23-year-old Jake Bloss with triple-A Buffalo and 24-year-old Adam Macko, who is recovering from left knee surgery.
