Red Sox's Trevor Story named AL Player of the Week after hot streak
Trevor Story is heating up at the plate — and the MLB is taking notice. On Monday, the league named the Red Sox shortstop the American League Player of the Week, highlighting a dominant five-game stretch that saw Story post a .500 batting average, a 1.793 OPS, and went 9-for-18 with seven runs scored, four doubles, three home runs, eight RBIs, two walks, and a stolen base. After going 15 games without a home run between July 8 and July 29, Story found his power swing again last week, hitting three homers in five games — including two home runs in Minnesota. He crushed his 18th home run of the season in Saturday's 7-3 win over the Astros, then followed it up with another strong performance on Sunday — marking his fifth straight game with a hit. The veteran shortstop missed significant time over the past two seasons due to injuries, and he initially struggled to regain consistency in 2025. But the Red Sox's late-May road trip to Milwaukee seems to have sparked a turnaround. Since that trip ended on May 28, Story has hit .291 at the plate. Following his performance on Sunday, he raised his season average to .256 and is now ranked in sixth-place in the AL with 69 RBIs. Read the original article on MassLive.

White Sox hope to put an end to Blue Jays' winning streak
(Photo credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images) A common refrain during the Toronto Blue Jays' best winning streak in a decade has been 'it's a different guy every night.' With Toronto's tear at nine games entering Tuesday's visit to the Chicago White Sox, someone theoretically must contribute a repeat heroic performance to keep the streak alive. Toronto will seek to secure its fifth straight series victory after earning an 8-4 win in the series opener Monday. Joey Loperfido, Nathan Lukes and Addison Barger homered while Bo Bichette and Loperfido delivered two hits apiece. Toronto navigated a late White Sox rally to hold on. The Blue Jays are on their first nine-game winning streak since the 2015 club won 12 straight. Monday marked the home debut of White Sox rookie shortstop Colson Montgomery, who walked and scored a run. Leadoff man Mike Tauchman delivered three hits, including a two-run single. 'We're getting some good at-bats and good swings and hopefully we can keep putting those together tomorrow,' Chicago manager Will Venable said. Toronto has clicked since losing two of three to the visiting White Sox from June 20-22. The Blue Jays have won 12 of 14 while benefiting from solid pitching and an opportunistic attack. Shortly after earning plaudits as American League Player of the Week, Blue Jays designated hitter George Springer went 0-for-5 Monday. But the rest of the lineup picked him up as Toronto won again. This time, it was Loperfido who excelled in his second game since being recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. '(Toronto's) games are on ... in our clubhouse down there. Everybody's pulling for everybody,' Loperfido said. 'There have been some Bisons that have come up here and contributed all season long. ... I think it speaks to the culture of the organization. 'Guys are rooting for each other and pulling for each other because they know how hard it is to do it up here.' Veteran right-hander Aaron Civale will start for the White Sox as he tries for his first victory since joining Chicago in mid-June. Civale (1-5, 4.60 ERA) is 0-3 with a 4.29 ERA in four starts with the White Sox. He is coming off Thursday's road loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, when he yielded five runs, two earned, and five hits in five innings. Civale lost to the host Blue Jays on June 21, allowing five runs and nine hits in a season-high seven innings. Civale issued just one walk for the fourth time this season but proved susceptible to the long ball, as Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. both reached him for solo home runs. Toronto righty Chris Bassitt took a no-decision against the White Sox one day later, allowing one run and three hits in six innings with one walk and seven strikeouts. Bassitt will start for the Blue Jays on Tuesday. In his last start, Bassitt (8-4, 4.32) pitched 5 2/3 innings of three-run, eight-hit ball to defeat the New York Yankees, picking up his first win since June 10. He walked three and struck out nine, one shy of his season high. Bassitt has pitched effectively versus the White Sox in his career, going 5-2 with a 2.78 ERA in 10 starts. Civale is 2-4 with a 5.40 ERA in six starts against Toronto. --Field Level Media

Chicago White Sox's Miguel Vargas makes ‘special' return to Dodger Stadium — and picks up a World Series ring
LOS ANGELES — Chicago White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas caught up with Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and general manager Brandon Gomes near home plate before Tuesday's game at Dodger Stadium. There were laughs and hugs. And when the conversation wrapped up, Vargas left with a box holding his 2024 World Series championship ring. 'It's always good to have that type of reward,' Vargas said afterward. 'Happy to see my old teammates and to be back here at Dodger Stadium. 'A lot of players dream about something like this. I'm very happy to have one.' Vargas played in 30 games for the Dodgers last season before being traded to the Sox in a three-team deal that also included the St. Louis Cardinals. Tuesday's game marked his return to the Dodger Stadium. 'It's always good (to return),' he said. 'Dodger Stadium is one of the best places for a baseball game. One of the best (memories) was to see Albert Pujols hit his 700th home run (on Sept. 23, 2022). … To be back here is always special.' Vargas came up through the Dodgers organization after signing as an international free agent in September 2017. He made his major-league debut in 2022 and spent portions of three seasons with the Dodgers before being traded to the Sox on July 29, 2024. The Sox sent pitcher Michael Kopech to the Dodgers and outfielder Tommy Pham and pitcher Erick Fedde to the St. Louis Cardinals in the deal. 'That was the best thing to happen to me and my career, to come to this organization and to have the opportunity to play every single day,' Vargas said. 'Coming into this year, I understand that a little bit more, and I'm happy with everything I've been doing this year. 'I just really want to focus on what I have now. I learned from the past and that's what got me here now.' Vargas already has exceeded career highs in home runs (10), RBIs (34), hits (68), doubles (20) and runs (41). Tuesday's game was his 82nd of the season, surpassing his previous high of 81 with the Dodgers in 2023. He was tied for seventh in the American League in doubles entering Wednesday. Vargas initially struggled after the trade, going 14-for-135 (.104) in 42 games with the Sox in 2024. 'Obviously last year wasn't good,' he said. 'This year, feeling I'm in a better place.' The third baseman/first baseman made adjustments at the plate in April, including starting his hands from a slightly higher position, and found immediate success. That was on full display May 12-18, when he went 10-for-24 (.417) with two doubles, four home runs, nine RBIs and five runs in six road games against the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs. That stretch included a three-run home run in extra innings in a 5-1 victory May 13 against the Reds at Great American Ball Park and a two-homer game May 16 in a 13-3 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The production earned Vargas American League Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. 'The organization, myself and (Vargas) have a vision about the kind of player that he can be,' manager Will Venable said before Tuesday's game. 'He's had to work really hard to get there. To see that in the early part of this year where he's worked through some adjustments, made those adjustments and stuck with them and gotten results is really cool to see. 'He's a really good player and we're watching him become that on a daily basis here.' Vargas was batting .243 after a two-hit day June 22 in Toronto that featured a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning. But he has only one hit since, entering Wednesday in a 1-for-25 funk over his last seven games. His average was down to .226 after going 0-for-4 in Tuesday's 6-1 loss to the Dodgers. He has shown the ability to rebound. Part of Venable's vision for Vargas is being able to adapt. 'There's more consistency to his power game, there's more he can do defensively, there's a lot of ways he can continue to impact a game and I think he's going to,' Venable said. 'He's a 25-year-old guy that understands the game and works extremely hard. I anticipate his development is not done yet.'
