Seattle Mariners Fall Out Of AL West Lead After Big Loss
Seattle Mariners Fall Out Of AL West Lead After Big Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's been a good run for the Seattle Mariners atop the American League West Division standings. But that's over now after Seattle suffered a big blow, losing to the Minnesota Twins 12-6 in extra innings on Friday, May 30. Advertisement Carlos Correa's two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning broke a tie, setting up the Twins for a huge six-run outburst. The Twins scored three runs in their half of the ninth inning, then silenced Mariners fans with their 10th-inning antics. Heading into Saturday's action, the Mariners now sit a half-game behind - who else? - the Houston Astros. Yanier Diaz's game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth carried the Astros over the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 on Friday. Cal Raleigh continued his smoking-hot home run pace for Mariners on Friday night Still, the Mariners had something to smile about despite the setback. Cal Raleigh, the "Big Dumper" himself, broke the record for most home runs by a catcher before the end of May. He slammed two homers at T-Mobile Park, giving him 21 total homers this season, reported. Advertisement Raleigh's three-run homer in the first inning put Seattle on top, then he added a two-run bomb in the eighth inning. He now has 11 homers in May alone, which puts him in second place among MLB homer leaders for the month behind Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani. If Raleigh can connect on another dinger or two on Saturday, then his homer numbers will go up, of course. Still, Raleigh probably would have traded his homers for a victory at home on Friday night. Mariners Rookie Pitcher Makes Major Impression With Start Against Padres
While Logan Evans wasn't a name many Seattle Mariners fans thought would be up in the major leagues this season, that's exactly what has happened. Evans went out on Friday, May 16, and scored some big points with his MLB teammates. Evans used a steady diet of fastballs to keep the vaunted San Diego Padres' lineup of heavy hitters off-stride. It worked as the Mariners posted a 5-1 win over the Padres at Petco Park. Advertisement The young Mariners' prospect was able to not only pitch well, but he's been listening closely to the MLB pitching staff. While he's up with the big-league club to help plug gaps left by a bevy of pitchers on the Injured List, Evans wants to make the most of his opportunity. Pitcher Logan Evans focuses on what he can do to get better for the Mariners 'I don't know exactly know what my role is going to be all year,' Evans said after Friday's game, reported. 'But for right now, it's just give the team a chance to win. I feel like I'm doing that. And obviously tonight, I felt like I executed that.' Advertisement Giving Seattle a chance to win is important as the Mariners try to stave off some American League West Division challengers. They have the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers nipping at their heels. Piling up wins early in the season, even though it is a little past mid-May, matters. What will Evans need to focus on from this start? 'The main focus in between starts has been getting his fastball command and confidence settled,' Mariners pitching coach Pete Woodworth said. 'Not that he's going to pitch off his fastballs or throw 80 percent heaters, like Bryan Woo. But when you need to throw a fastball, you've got to be able to use it, command it and he did that.' It will be interesting to see how much knowledge Evans soaked up between starts. He heads out again on Wednesday when the Mariners (27-19) square off against the Chicago White Sox (14-34).

Seattle Mariners Boast Early AL MVP Candidate
The Seattle Mariners have been atop the American League West Division standings for much of this MLB season. One big reason has been the stellar play of the "Big Dumper" himself, Cal Raleigh. Mariners fans know that Raleigh has been one of the most impressive hitters in his time with the team. Yet he's off to an awesome start through this season's early weeks. Advertisement Take a look at what the catcher has been doing at the plate. He already has 13 home runs and is slashing at a .924 OPS, reported. For the homer total, that slots Raleigh in the range of a 50-homer season if he can keep it up. And his OPS? Goodness, that's up 176 points from last season alone. His play behind the plate has been worth noting, too. The Mariners' pitching staff has been going through tough times, yet Raleigh does a stellar job in calling a game. He makes sure that Seattle pitchers perform at their highest level. It's been a struggle for most of them. Having a veteran voice and some level of patience is key for Seattle to maintain its AL West lead. The Mariners know that the Houston Astros are always lurking in the division. And, the same thing can be said for the Texas Rangers. Raleigh, though, will keep on helping his pitchers. He's been awesome in the batter's box himself. Should he keep up this pace, then look for Raleigh to add AL MVP to his list of accomplishments.
