Mariners Rookie Pitcher Makes Major Impression With Start Against Padres

While Logan Evans wasn't a name many Seattle Mariners fans thought would be up in the major leagues this season, that's exactly what has happened. Evans went out on Friday, May 16, and scored some big points with his MLB teammates.
Evans used a steady diet of fastballs to keep the vaunted San Diego Padres' lineup of heavy hitters off-stride. It worked as the Mariners posted a 5-1 win over the Padres at Petco Park.

The young Mariners' prospect was able to not only pitch well, but he's been listening closely to the MLB pitching staff.
While he's up with the big-league club to help plug gaps left by a bevy of pitchers on the Injured List, Evans wants to make the most of his opportunity.
Pitcher Logan Evans focuses on what he can do to get better for the Mariners
'I don't know exactly know what my role is going to be all year,' Evans said after Friday's game, MLB.com reported. 'But for right now, it's just give the team a chance to win. I feel like I'm doing that. And obviously tonight, I felt like I executed that.'

Giving Seattle a chance to win is important as the Mariners try to stave off some American League West Division challengers. They have the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers nipping at their heels. Piling up wins early in the season, even though it is a little past mid-May, matters.
What will Evans need to focus on from this start? 'The main focus in between starts has been getting his fastball command and confidence settled,' Mariners pitching coach Pete Woodworth said. 'Not that he's going to pitch off his fastballs or throw 80 percent heaters, like Bryan Woo. But when you need to throw a fastball, you've got to be able to use it, command it and he did that.'
It will be interesting to see how much knowledge Evans soaked up between starts. He heads out again on Wednesday when the Mariners (27-19) square off against the Chicago White Sox (14-34).

Will Tampa Bay Rays Be Buyers or Sellers by MLB Trade Deadline?

Will Tampa Bay Rays Be Buyers or Sellers by MLB Trade Deadline? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Rays are in a unique position. Though they trail the New York Yankees by 5.5 games in the American League East going into Thursday, the Rays are squarely in the Wild Card hunt. Advertisement A recent surge has Tampa Bay just a half-game out of the last playoff spot, which is an enviable position with the MLB trade deadline coming fast. Teams have until July 31 to make a deal, with it unclear whether the Rays will be buyers or sellers? Or perhaps they can do both. Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander is no stranger to dealing, as a number of moves last year helped set the club up for contention this season and in those to come. The Rays have significant depth to use as potential trade chips is both the buying and selling scenarios. What will the Rays do at the trade deadline? As noted by Mark Feinsand, much can happen in the near future. A lot will depend on how things shake out in the coming weeks. If Ha-Seong Kim is healthy and effective, their need for a better shortstop is answered. If Shane McClanahan is close to his old form, they've got an ace. The depth in the organization could provide the answers to any needs they have, but the Rays are always cognizant of their players' contractual status, which could open the door for some deals. Advertisement Some of those pieces could be on the move or remain in place if the club hopes to make a playoff run. Closer Pete Fairbanks has one more year of control, Brandon Lowe has a club option for 2026 and Yandy Díaz is signed through 2026 with an option for '27. Zack Littell is headed for free agency this winter. If the Rays are firmly in the race next month, it's hard to see them moving any of these key pieces, but with Tampa Bay, you never know. Expect the Rays and Neander to be busy. Whichever path they take is anyone's guess. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 5, 2025, where it first appeared.

Springer hits go-ahead homer in Blue Jays' 5-4 win over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — George Springer hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 on Saturday. Springer went deep against Twins reliever Griffin Jax (1-4), who allowed a leadoff double to Addison Barger one at-bat earlier. Springer's 10th homer of the season made it 4-3 just as a light rain started falling at Target Field. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. tacked on an insurance run with a two-out RBI single in the ninth off Twins closer Jhoan Durán. Chad Green (2-1) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win. Jeff Hoffman allowed a solo homer in the ninth to Kody Clemens but still earned his 15th save. Minnesota took a 3-2 lead in the sixth on a solo home run by Matt Wallner. The Twins DH went deep to right against Toronto starter Kevin Gausman, his second homer in the past three days. Gausman didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. The Twins' first hit by Ryan Jeffers sparked a two-run inning that tied the game. Twins starter Chris Paddack allowed runs in each of the first two innings but settled down after that. Paddack faced the minimum in the third and fifth innings. Minnesota had the bases loaded in the seventh but came up empty as Carlos Correa flew out to end the threat. Key moment Barger's leadoff double helped set the tone in the eighth. He found plenty of space in left field to easily put the tying run in scoring position against Jax. Key stat With a no-decision in Saturday's game, Gausman has just one win in 14 career starts against the Twins. He has a career 6.44 ERA versus Minnesota. Up next Toronto RHP Bowden Francis (2-7, 5.84 ERA) takes the mound for Sunday's series finale, looking for his first win since April 18. The Twins will counter with RHP Joe Ryan (6-2, 2.91), who has won four of his last five starts.
