Dark clouds don't dim celebration of new Colorado Street bridge in Hobart

The opening of the Colorado Street bridge over the Canadian National Railroad was celebrated with a ribbon cutting and brief comments by Hobart Mayor Josh Huddlestun and former Mayor Brian Snedecor. That portion of Colorado Street, just north of 69th Avenue, has been closed to traffic since February 2024 and reopened Thursday following the ceremony held under a dark-cloud-filled sky. Both mayors singled out the Indiana Department of Transportation for its part in funding the project through INDOT's TRAX Program while also thanking other partners in the project including Lochmueller Group, American Structurepoint and Superior Construction. 'This is going to mean a lot more than a bridge over a railroad track. This was one of the pinch points for us. There were lots of accidents. It will definitely help our first responders…We appreciate this from the bottom of our heart,' Huddlestun said. Snedecor also had nothing but praise for INDOT which awarded Hobart $5,574,280 some seven years ago. 'Back in 2018, we were one of a few communities to receive the TRAX grant. Many of you remember this crossing and trains having to come to a stop. Without INDOT's commitment to funding this would have never happened,' Snedecor said. The project is part of INDOT's Local Trax Rail Overpass Program which aims to improve safety and mobility at local railroad crossings. Hobart was awarded over $5 million to convert the grade crossing to a new two-span, prestressed concrete bulb-tee beam bridge with one lane in each direction and a 10-foot sidewalk. The project also accounted for future growth and traffic in the area, according to city officials. Matt Deitchley, deputy commissioner for INDOT, said he was there when the TRAX grant was awarded to Hobart and other communities in Northwest Indiana. 'I could not be more excited to see the finish line here today. It will be a huge benefit to mobility but more importantly safety,' Deitchley said. Gina Sessions, a project manager for American Structurepoint, said even though the road will be open to traffic there will still be some loose ends to complete including sodding and lighting.

Local city with most roundabouts earns national recognition

GREEN, Ohio (WJW) – A local city, with likely more roundabouts than any other in northeast Ohio, is receiving national recognition. While roundabouts aren't typically viewed as the most popular traffic pattern by the public, experts maintain they are much safer than traditional traffic signals — and two in Northeast Ohio have earned a national award for their design. According to a press release from the engineering firm American Structurepoint, their team and the City of Green earned a 'National Recognition Award' from the American Council of Engineering Companies in the '2025 Engineering Excellence Awards' for their work along Massillon Road, which is the city's busiest road. Powerball win in Ohio! Is it yours? According to City Engineer Paul Pickett, Green has six roundabouts on Massillon Road. Google Maps shows those roundabouts all within about a 2.5 mile stretch. This specific project being recognized created two of the roundabouts — both multilane — and according to American Structurepoint, made the stretch of roadway safer, improved traffic flow, and eased congestion. They're located at Boettler Road and Corporate Woods Circle/Thorn Drive. Why analyst says Intel won't fulfill Ohio promises 'Traffic analysis showed Massillon Road would need to be widened to 9 lanes for a traditional intersection improvement project,' read the release from American Structurepoint. 'Opting for the roundabout solution saved the city approximately $1.2 million in costs related to right-of-way, land acquisition, construction, and future maintenance.' The Massillon Road Roundabouts Project is also set to receive an 'Outstanding Highway Project Award' by the American Society for Health Care Engineering later this month. Overall, the City of Green has 12 roundabouts within city limits and one more on the border with Stark County. In addition, Pickett said, the city has 4 more roundabouts planned which are currently under design. According to Pickett, Green 'likely' has the most roundabouts in northeast Ohio, but he notes that central Ohio has well over 100 roundabouts in the greater Columbus area, with cities like Dublin, which reportedly has 17 roundabouts, and Hilliard, which has 15.
