Local city with most roundabouts earns national recognition
GREEN, Ohio (WJW) – A local city, with likely more roundabouts than any other in northeast Ohio, is receiving national recognition.
While roundabouts aren't typically viewed as the most popular traffic pattern by the public, experts maintain they are much safer than traditional traffic signals — and two in Northeast Ohio have earned a national award for their design.
According to a press release from the engineering firm American Structurepoint, their team and the City of Green earned a 'National Recognition Award' from the American Council of Engineering Companies in the '2025 Engineering Excellence Awards' for their work along Massillon Road, which is the city's busiest road.
Powerball win in Ohio! Is it yours?
According to City Engineer Paul Pickett, Green has six roundabouts on Massillon Road. Google Maps shows those roundabouts all within about a 2.5 mile stretch.
This specific project being recognized created two of the roundabouts — both multilane — and according to American Structurepoint, made the stretch of roadway safer, improved traffic flow, and eased congestion. They're located at Boettler Road and Corporate Woods Circle/Thorn Drive.
Why analyst says Intel won't fulfill Ohio promises
'Traffic analysis showed Massillon Road would need to be widened to 9 lanes for a traditional intersection improvement project,' read the release from American Structurepoint. 'Opting for the roundabout solution saved the city approximately $1.2 million in costs related to right-of-way, land acquisition, construction, and future maintenance.'
The Massillon Road Roundabouts Project is also set to receive an 'Outstanding Highway Project Award' by the American Society for Health Care Engineering later this month.
Overall, the City of Green has 12 roundabouts within city limits and one more on the border with Stark County. In addition, Pickett said, the city has 4 more roundabouts planned which are currently under design.
According to Pickett, Green 'likely' has the most roundabouts in northeast Ohio, but he notes that central Ohio has well over 100 roundabouts in the greater Columbus area, with cities like Dublin, which reportedly has 17 roundabouts, and Hilliard, which has 15.

Google Maps for Android Automotive will stop clashing with your vehicle's UI
Damien Wilde / Android Authority TL;DR Google Maps for Android Automotive is getting customized design elements. This new ability will allow the UI in Maps to match the UI of the native OS. Polestar announced that this feature would roll out to its cars in the coming weeks. While plenty of vehicles have Android Automotive installed, you won't find two brands with the exact same OS aesthetic. This is because Google lets car makers customize the UI to fit their desired user experience. However, the story is a little different for apps you have installed, as they are unaffected by the native OS's design influences. But this is changing for at least one auto brand soon. At SXSW London, Polestar revealed that it has been working with Google to bring customized design elements to Google Maps. These custom design elements would allow you to change the look of Maps so that it better matches the overall UI. Polestar says that this change will create 'a more balanced look and feel within the overall user interface.' In a LinkedIn post, the company shared the example below to show what this would look like. Currently, Google Maps on Android Automotive features rounded UI elements and uses different color themes than the rest of Polestar's UI. You can see what the current version looks like in the image on the left. Meanwhile, the center and right images show off the customized design. In these examples, you can see that the UI elements now have squared-off edges. The UI also adopts Polestar's default orange accent color. According to Polestar, this update is coming to all of its vehicles in the coming weeks. We would assume that Google is working with other brands to bring similar customization elsewhere, but it's unknown what the company's plans are. Got a tip? Talk to us! Google Maps on Android Auto is getting smarter about using all your vehicle's screens
TL;DR Google Maps has recently started offering a navigation pop-up on select instrument cluster displays. So far this has been spotted on the Polestar 2. We previously saw Waze delivering a similar behind-the-wheel view. How many digital screens can you see right this second? From our phones, to computers, to TVs and smart home hubs, our lives our just jam-packed with displays vying for our attention. And while that can easily start to get pretty overwhelming, this kind of preponderance of screens can also work to our benefit — if and when apps and services are making smart decisions about what to show, where. Right now, Google's working on pushing out just such an improvement to Android Auto. Just like so many other places in our lives, cars have been doubling down on their interest in screens in recent years. Beyond just offering one main screen on which we could interact with the car's own OS or use something like Android Auto, it's increasingly common to find vehicles that have additional display beyond that, with one especially popular option being a virtual instrument cluster display that lives right behind your steering wheel. Earlier this year we saw Waze learning to expand its navigation guidance to those cluster screens, and now we're learning about some similar efforts from Google Maps. Running Android Auto version 14.3.651844 on a Galaxy S25, 9to5Google reports that the Polestar 2 is now able to display Google Maps navigation data as a pop-up on its behind-the-wheel screen. This is distinct from the range and ETA view previously available through the car's Android Automotive interface. While this kind of functionality still appears to be incredibly limited across vehicles supporting Android Auto, that's a situation we only expect to get better, and it's nice to hear that Google's working to keep up with these trends. Placing navigation info front-and-center like this feels like a smart way to ensure that it's always easily within a driver's sight lines, helping to minimize distraction. That said, all this does feel a bit like a work in progress, and 9to5Google notes that the current implementation risks obscuring map detail with this pop-up in a way that could theoretically impair navigation. Hopefully we'll see Google play around a little more with its layout as we see this kind of view expand to more vehicles. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ .
