Local city with most roundabouts earns national recognition

GREEN, Ohio (WJW) – A local city, with likely more roundabouts than any other in northeast Ohio, is receiving national recognition. While roundabouts aren't typically viewed as the most popular traffic pattern by the public, experts maintain they are much safer than traditional traffic signals — and two in Northeast Ohio have earned a national award for their design. According to a press release from the engineering firm American Structurepoint, their team and the City of Green earned a 'National Recognition Award' from the American Council of Engineering Companies in the '2025 Engineering Excellence Awards' for their work along Massillon Road, which is the city's busiest road. Powerball win in Ohio! Is it yours? According to City Engineer Paul Pickett, Green has six roundabouts on Massillon Road. Google Maps shows those roundabouts all within about a 2.5 mile stretch. This specific project being recognized created two of the roundabouts — both multilane — and according to American Structurepoint, made the stretch of roadway safer, improved traffic flow, and eased congestion. They're located at Boettler Road and Corporate Woods Circle/Thorn Drive. Why analyst says Intel won't fulfill Ohio promises 'Traffic analysis showed Massillon Road would need to be widened to 9 lanes for a traditional intersection improvement project,' read the release from American Structurepoint. 'Opting for the roundabout solution saved the city approximately $1.2 million in costs related to right-of-way, land acquisition, construction, and future maintenance.' The Massillon Road Roundabouts Project is also set to receive an 'Outstanding Highway Project Award' by the American Society for Health Care Engineering later this month. Overall, the City of Green has 12 roundabouts within city limits and one more on the border with Stark County. In addition, Pickett said, the city has 4 more roundabouts planned which are currently under design. According to Pickett, Green 'likely' has the most roundabouts in northeast Ohio, but he notes that central Ohio has well over 100 roundabouts in the greater Columbus area, with cities like Dublin, which reportedly has 17 roundabouts, and Hilliard, which has 15.
