Where We Are Going Today: ‘Amigos' — Mexican dining in Riyadh

If you are seeking a Mexican dining experience in Riyadh, look no further than Amigos. Stepping in felt like a warm hug from an old friend. The restaurant has maintained its charm over the years, and aside from some new touches, the heart and soul of Amigos remains as it was. The ambiance is simple and unpretentious, reminiscent of a small-town cantina. So, if hearty, soul-warming Mexican food is what you crave, this is the place to be. During my recent visit, we indulged in a variety of dishes, including nachos, shrimp tacos, chicken quesadilla and even a hot dog. Each item left me feeling eager to return for more. The homemade nacho chips, guacamole and salsa were delightful, and the quality of the beef was exceptional. Every bite was just like I remembered. I also tried a meat taco, which could have been better with some toppings like avocado and sour cream. The meal came with fried potatoes and rice, though I found the nachos a bit lacking in quantity. I visited Amigos based on a recommendation and was impressed by the ambiance and the food. The staff were also attentive, making for a wonderful dining experience. We left completely satisfied. While the portions could be larger for the price — about SR50 riyals ($13) for a decent burrito or SR40 for tacos — the quality makes it worthwhile. For those raised in Riyadh, Amigos represents a soulful corner of the city that stays evergreen.

Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve nonprofit awards first college scholarships

Eight high school seniors have received some money to help them get started in college, thanks to a new scholarship provided by Huntington Beach environmental nonprofit Amigos de Bolsa Chica. Amigos presented the scholarships to the students from Long Beach and Orange County-area high schools on May 17. The recipients, their families and guests were then treated to a tour of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, as well as the Shark Lab at Cal State Long Beach with Dr. Chris Lowe and Amigos volunteer Sam Lopez. Ocean View High senior Alexa Barrera, the oldest daughter in her family and the first to attend college, was among the recipients. Barrera has been active in the Seahawks' college preparatory program, Stepping Up, and served on the stunt cheerleading team this year. She will enroll in the nursing program at Golden West College. The scholarship is named after Bill and Meredyth Stern, according to Amigos de Bolsa Chica President Mel Nutter. Bill Stern, an Amigos board member, died in 2022, and his wife Meredyth subsequently made a $2 million donation in his honor. 'She wanted to honor Bill by providing Amigos with some additional resources for the different things we were doing, including encouraging us to create the scholarship,' Nutter said. 'It's been kind of an exciting ride for us, because of course part of what Amigos de Bolsa Chica is interested in is environmental education. It's a new thing. On the other hand, we anticipate we're going to be doing it from now on out.' The others awarded included Annabelle Kerendian of Lakewood High, Jillene Wetteland of Long Beach Poly High, Fernando Ortega of Santa Ana High, Yayoy Espinoza Soriano of Segerstrom High, Jim Le of Westminster High, Tiffany Nguyen of Garden Grove High and Kristy Huynh of Rancho Alamitos High. Each were selected after Amigos de Bolsa Chica received numerous applications. Nutter said a framed picture has been signed by each recipient and will be sent to Meredyth Stern. He said it was fun meeting and celebrating the high school seniors. 'I had never been to the Shark Lab myself before, and it was really impressive,' Nutter said.

Pharmacy teams with The United Family prepared to help community as measles cases continue to rise

Feb. 26—LUBBOCK — With the recent measles outbreak in West Texas, The United Family issued a news release Wednesday that United Supermarkets, Amigos, and Market Street Pharmacies in Texas can administer the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine in store. With convenient locations and evening and weekend hours, the pharmacy can provide an alternative to doctor's offices. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, 124 measles cases have been identified with symptom onset within the last three weeks. Eighteen of the patients have been hospitalized and there has been one death of a school-age child. Due to the highly contagious nature of this disease, additional cases are likely to occur in Gaines County and the surrounding communities. Helpful details to share with your audience regarding MMR vaccines at our Pharmacies: — No appointment is necessary. Guests can walk in to talk to a pharmacist and request an MMR vaccine. — Pharmacists can vaccinate children age 13 and under with a prescription from their doctor. They can vaccinate children 14 and up without a prescription. — Post-exposure prophylaxis is available for adults within 3 days of exposure.
