Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve nonprofit awards first college scholarships
Eight high school seniors have received some money to help them get started in college, thanks to a new scholarship provided by Huntington Beach environmental nonprofit Amigos de Bolsa Chica.
Amigos presented the scholarships to the students from Long Beach and Orange County-area high schools on May 17. The recipients, their families and guests were then treated to a tour of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, as well as the Shark Lab at Cal State Long Beach with Dr. Chris Lowe and Amigos volunteer Sam Lopez.
Ocean View High senior Alexa Barrera, the oldest daughter in her family and the first to attend college, was among the recipients. Barrera has been active in the Seahawks' college preparatory program, Stepping Up, and served on the stunt cheerleading team this year.
She will enroll in the nursing program at Golden West College.
The scholarship is named after Bill and Meredyth Stern, according to Amigos de Bolsa Chica President Mel Nutter. Bill Stern, an Amigos board member, died in 2022, and his wife Meredyth subsequently made a $2 million donation in his honor.
'She wanted to honor Bill by providing Amigos with some additional resources for the different things we were doing, including encouraging us to create the scholarship,' Nutter said. 'It's been kind of an exciting ride for us, because of course part of what Amigos de Bolsa Chica is interested in is environmental education. It's a new thing. On the other hand, we anticipate we're going to be doing it from now on out.'
The others awarded included Annabelle Kerendian of Lakewood High, Jillene Wetteland of Long Beach Poly High, Fernando Ortega of Santa Ana High, Yayoy Espinoza Soriano of Segerstrom High, Jim Le of Westminster High, Tiffany Nguyen of Garden Grove High and Kristy Huynh of Rancho Alamitos High. Each were selected after Amigos de Bolsa Chica received numerous applications.
Nutter said a framed picture has been signed by each recipient and will be sent to Meredyth Stern. He said it was fun meeting and celebrating the high school seniors.
'I had never been to the Shark Lab myself before, and it was really impressive,' Nutter said.

Beyond The Gates Recap: Andre Tries to Explain Himself to Dani
Beyond The Gates Recap: Andre Tries to Explain Himself to Dani originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. On today's Beyond The Gates recap: Anita and Vernon's Mansion: Naomi arrives with a gift for her gran. She opens it and sees a framed one sheet from an Articulettes concert. She thanks her granddaughter for the very fond memory. Anita gets in her feels and leaves the room. Anita returns and says looking back has its hazards and notes getting the group back together isn't going to happen. Naomi wants to shift her meeting with Bill to the next day and head off to the club. Anita says she didn't know who she was back in the day. She promises not to wallow for long but needs to sit in this sadness for a minute. They agree to talk later and Naomi exits. Anita looks in a cabinet and pulls out a letter from a hidden drawer. She sits in her bay window and begins to read. (Closed Captioning tells us the narrator of the letter is Barbara) – Barbara tells Anita to take a bow as the group she started moved forward in a way they never imagined, without her. She reminds Anita how the FOUR OF THEM use to stay up late in that little room at Cabrini-Green. They used to talk about how their careers were going to flourish even thought their families thought they were crazy. Barbara loved Anita and in return she took her group, her pride and her dignity. Barbara wonders whether Anita had it in her to feel anything at all. Barbara explains that Dante Green was supposed to be their ticket to the big time. He was supposed to manage them but she was the problem. Bill's Law Office: Bill asks Tomas about the last HR committee meeting. Tomas says he didn't type up notes to keep from having a paper trail. He says they might think about smaller, less intrusive changes and Bill approves. Tomas says the goal is to facilitate a healthier work space. Bill approves but stops Tomas before he exits. He says he needs Tomas to keep an eye of his family. He thinks Bill is asking simply about Chelsea and Naomi but he tells Tomas to keep his eyes open for whatever he might see. Bill discusses Ted's issues with Leslie and make mention that keeping his eyes on Kat and Naomi might also be a good thing. Tomas pushes back but Bill says it's a light ask and simply needs him to help a father out. Tomas can't imagine how Kat will respond when he begins to ask questions. Just then, Bill gets a call saying Kat has arrived. She walks in and Bill says Tomas can have some time away to enjoy a meal. Dani's Home: Dani is on the phone when Hayley walks in and pulls out her positive pregnancy test. Dani thinks her move wreaks of desperation. She thinks Hayley is going to play a Lifetime movie and buy a prosthetic belly. Hayley says she just wants to enjoy her pregnancy without all Dani's chaos. Dani tells her to cut the crap and take a test in front of her. Hayley is unwilling to play Dani's game but she doubles down on her desire to know for a fact about her alleged pregnancy. With that, Dani tells Hayley to leave. Garfield Memorial Hospital: Andre walks in to find Ashley at the nurses station after her overnight shift. He asks about her relationship and Ashley indicates that Derek didn't actually move back in. Just then, the fireman walks in ready to take his girlfriend to breakfast. Derek explains he moved back into his old place, and all is right in their relationship world. Andre hopes he didn't overstep and explains he gave Ashely a bit of advice. Derek wonders why she didn't tell them about their encounter. Ashley scrambles a bit and Andre says he understands how couples find their own way. With that, he exits… but looks back before texting Dani, who says she's home waiting for him. Orphey Gene's: Leslie approaches Kat's table and takes a seat. She says the court has yet to comply with her restraining order because the Dupree family controls everything. Leslie says if she doesn't back off she will sue her for defamation of character. Kat explains Jacob is simply exploring the facts of a case but Leslie thinks the reason he hasn't found anything is because she is innocent. Kat tries to play with Leslie about being in her father's hotel room. Leslie says she was wearing the fit that night that she had on when they first met. Kat says her dad was only trying to get away from her as he is too smart to get pulled back into her web. Leslie tells little KitKat she has been underestimated her entire life which is why folks don't know she's around until she is right there. Bill's Law Office: Hayley arrives and gives Bill a little insight into her encounter with Dani. She pulls out the pregnancy test but Bill says he believes her as she has that glow. Just then, Naomi arrives and Bill informs her about their pregnancy. Naomi goes on an on saying it's clear Hayley has made certain to implant her insurance policy in her belly. Hayley thinks their child could bring them all together. Naomi says a child was something they all wanted when they were kids, not now. Naomi goes on and on when Bill begins to stutter and pass out. Orphey Gene's: Ashley and Derek arrive and discuss running into Andre. He thinks it's cool that Andre helped her out. Ashley wonders if he and Andre are now bros. Derek thinks they should ask Andre to hang the next time they're with Jacob and Naomi. Just then, Leslie arrives and asks Ashley about Jan. Ashley says she isn't talking to Leslie nor is her mama all because of the fraud she perpetrated. Leslie tells Ashley she has everything wrong and simply wants to know how Laura is doing. Ashley says she would never break confidentiality to allow Leslie private information about Laura's case. Leslie thinks it's a shame how the Dupree's dictate a narrative. Ashley says, just in case, the hospital has changes all its protocols (really?). Derek promises Ashley isn't spreading gossip about her. Leslie says she is worried about being entrapped as she doesn't know what Kat Richardson is trying to do. Leslie goes on when Derek stands up and tells her to slow her roll (Of course it's Leslie who makes Derek and Ashley interesting and relevant). Leslie pretends to be taken by Derek standing up for his woman. She moves along saying she thought she had that once, but it was never her (Leslie manipulating Derek could be fun). Ashley says if Leslie turns herself in, they might go easy on her. Leslie ignores Ashley (giggle) and says if she needs more info she knows where to find her. Fairmont Country Club: Tomas and Kat take a seat. She tells him about Leslie's threat to sue, and he says it won't stick. She can't claim defamation if what she says was the truth. Tomas is surprised she came to him as she has Naomi to consult. Kat says she didn't want to put her cousin in a particular situation seeing that Jacob is moving so slowly. Tomas explains there are all kinds of reasons why charges haven't been filed. Kat says she listens to all kinds of podcasts and knows she has provided Jacob with enough evidence to lock Leslie up. Tomas totally agrees… with Jacob. Kat inquires and Tomas tries to explain how actual means, motive and opportunity works. Kat gets frustrated but Tomas drives it home that this is how things work in the court system. Kat asks Tomas to not tell Bill anything they've discussed. He doesn't respond and says they should step back and let Jacob finish the investigation. Kat says she needs to find a way to stop Leslie and Eva. Dani's Place: Andre arrives to find Dani a little hot about turning her down the last time. She admits what happened with Hayley is likely coloring their interaction. She thinks a fake pregnancy is going to get his attention. To illustrate her point, Dani talks about all the nice things Bill did when she was pregnant. Andre understands immediately that Dani doesn't want to share those memories and quickly makes his way to leave. He thinks she should spend more time paying attention to the man in front of her who actually gives a damn. Andre takes a seat and says he never saw her coming – being over her, under her, TASTING HER (YASSSS!) and hearing her. Every time he's with Dani it's new. Dani questions him ghosting her for days. Andre gets it saying his trip home was supposed to be brief but he's been enticed to stick around. He's changing into a guy who is ready to move on from no-strings. Dani questions his recent actions and Andre is at a complete loss. They go back and forth before Dani rightfully says that Andre has another woman on a string. Andre pushes her questions away leading Dani to say she isn't ready for a full-on, in public relationship. She thinks they are a sad pair as friends with benefits whose hearts are partially taken by others who don't want them. Andre says she is important to him, and he thinks he is good for her. With that, they kiss and hit the couch. Previous Beyond The Gates Recap: Endings Naomi and Hayley go to Bill, and he stutters over the word, 'humiliate.' Hayley tries to get him to drink water, but he's done with their attention. They both talk about his hand going to sleep but then he starts stammering again. Anita continues to read Barbara's letter as she notes Dante said her voice was 'too ghetto' and there was no fixing it. Dante fired her and when she came to Anita, she was cold and distant. As Barbara narrates Anita's cruel words, she says them out loud as she seems to remember them from memory or at least from having read the letter 50-11 times. As she finishes reciting the letter, we learn that if Anita is reading her words Barbara is already dead. With that, Anita breaks down into hysterical tears. Keep checking back for the latest Beyond The Gates recaps! This story was originally reported by Daytime Confidential on Jun 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

Who Will Slip and Tell Bill His Son Is Dying on Bold and the Beautiful?
Right now on Bold and the Beautiful, only a few know Liam is living on borrowed time, but the truth is starting to leak like a sieve. What began as a private moment between Liam, Steffy, and Grace has turned into a tangled web of whispered confessions and hallway run-ins. Despite efforts to keep things under wraps, the list of those in the know keeps growing…and so does the risk of someone slipping. The biggest surprise? Dollar Bill (Don Diamont) still doesn't know. That's right – Dollar Bill, the fiercely loyal, wildly emotional, and sometimes unpredictable patriarch, is completely in the dark. And fans are on edge wondering not if he'll find out, but how… and who will break the news. MORE: Find out what happened last on B&B. Hope (Annika Noelle) got the news from Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) and has already spilled to Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor), which was a risky move considering how close he is to so many Forresters. Taylor (Rebecca Budig) knows now, too and she's not great at keeping explosive secrets to herself. If Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) hears it next, you can bet it'll find its way into Bill's ear – intentionally or not. Then there's Bridget (Ashley Jones), who literally stumbled upon Liam and has to be bursting to talk to someone medical about what she knows. Could it be Finn (Tanner Novlan) who accidentally tips off Bill in a well-meaning conversation about family? Or what if Grace (Cassandra Creech), overwhelmed by the emotional weight, vents to someone in confidence who happens to know Bill? And let's not count out Steffy – her heart is in the right place, but she's already told too many people for this to stay contained. Maybe, just maybe, Liam will sit his father down and tell him the horrible news. He came close when they hugged it out at Il Giardino, but he simply could not bring himself to do it. (Did you miss that episode? Read all about it here.) However, after that talk with Finn about his love for his family and yearning for support, maybe that's a decision he'll soon rethink. No matter who says it, once Bill finds out, all bets are off. Will he rally around Liam, or will he rage against the people who kept him in the dark? Either way, the Spencer family is about to face one of its most emotional reckonings yet.

New King Of The Hill Intro Implies A Lot Has Changed In Season 14
King of the Hill is back. The popular animated sitcom from Mike Judge is returning for a 14th season on Hulu. But, as shown in the show's new intro sequence, a lot has changed in Arlen, Texas. The original King of the Hill ran on Fox from 1997 to 2009. In that time, it produced 13 seasons and over 250 episodes. The first talks of reviving the grounded adult animated sitcom started back in 2017, before Disney had bought 2oth Century Fox. Now, nearly a decade after we first heard about a possible King of the Hill revival and over 15 years after the show ended, Hank Hill and his family and friends will be returning to TV with 10 new episodes in August. On May 30, Hulu released the new intro sequence for the show's 14th season. While it features the same music and uses the same time-lapse format as seen in the OG show's opening, this new sequence implies a lot has happened over the last 15 years. There are a lot of little details to spot in the intro, including Bill potentially getting COVID-19, Dale running for mayor, and someone moving into Hank's home for a few years while he and the family are away. And here's Hulu's official description of the returning show and its 14th season: 'After years working a propane job in Saudi Arabia to earn their retirement nest egg, Hank and Peggy Hill return to a changed Arlen, Texas to reconnect with old friends Dale, Boomhauer and Bill. Meanwhile, Bobby is living his dream as a chef in Dallas and enjoying his 20s with his former classmates Connie, Joseph and Chane.' King of the Hill's 14th season arrives on Hulu on August 4.
