Lions Urged to Amik Robertson After His Position Became Very Crowded This Offseason

Lions Urged to Amik Robertson After His Position Became Very Crowded This Offseason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Lions have a few new faces on the roster at cornerback this offseason. Advertisement They signed D.J. Reed to join their starting lineup and then added Rock Ya-Sin and Avonte Maddox as depth after a season where their depth was tested across their roster. Those additions coupled with the potential for a second-year player to take on a bigger role at the position could make one veteran cornerback a trade candidate this offseason. Detroit Lions cornerback Amik Robertson making a tackleJunfu Han/USA TODAY Network via Imagn Images In a recent article identifying one player each NFL team should consider trading this offseason, Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport named cornerback Amik Robertson as the player the Lions should consider trading. Robertson was a solid third option for the Lions in 2024. He only allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 61.4% of their pass attempts when throwing in his direction and gave up only 7.2 yards per target. Advertisement He was a strong tackler as well, making 50 total tackles, forcing three fumbles, and making 23 stops according to Pro Football Focus. Robertson's performance in 2024 showed that he could be a solid third corner again in 2025, but he has one big obstacle standing in his way. That obstacle is the potential emergence of Ennis Rakestraw Jr. Rakestraw played just 46 snaps last season after the Lions selected him in round two. If he develops the way the Lions are hoping this offseason, he'll take over a large chunk of Robertson's role and potentially make him expendable. If the Lions were to trade Robertson, they would save $4.25 million in cap space, which they could potentially then go use to sign an edge rusher or reinforce the interior of their offensive line. Advertisement There should be teams out there who would be interested in Robertson and the Lions should look to get something for him because he's not going to have much of a role of them in 2025 if he drops behind Rakestraw on the depth chart. Lions' Amik Robertson Sends Emotional Message Ahead of 2025 OTAs

The Detroit Lions' 2025 NFL Playoffs loss to the Washington Commanders came after cornerback Amik Robertson suffered a broken arm early in the first quarter. Robertson's injury was the lowest of lows after the highest of highs one week previous as he played incredible defense on Minnesota Vikings superstar Justin Jefferson in an NFC North Division clinching victory. Advertisement Robertson is expected back for next season this fall after a strong 2024 campaign with former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn's unit. Robertson sent a message earlier this week indicating the Lions' attitude as they prepare to get more offseason work in together as a team. The Lions struggled with defensive depth last season, especially at the cornerback position. Robertson's injury significantly hampered the Lions against Jayden Daniels, Terry McLaurin and the Commanders' passing attack, highlighting the need for improved health and depth this offseason. Advertisement The Lions added cornerback DJ Reed from the New York Jets in free agency but lost Carlton Davis III to the New England Patriots. Safety Dan Jackson was taken by the Lions in the seventh round, adding additional depth to a secondary that has become one of the focal points of the Lions' defense when healthy. Fans reacted with shouts of 'One Pride' and Honolulu blue colored heart emojis as they offered words of support for Robertson, widely considered to be one of the toughest players on the Lions' roster. "Lions play better as an underdog," one fan said. "Let the world talk their trash." Related: Jared Goff's Wife Makes Major Personal Announcement

May injury rehab updates on Lions Aidan Hutchinson and Amik Robertson

A quick check-in on two key Lions defenders coming off injuries to start the month. AIDAN HUTCHINSON October 13, 2024: Left tibia/fibula fracture April 11, 2025: Interview at the Masters - 6 months post injury During this interview, Hutchinson stated he has no pain with walking. This is good news as one of the potential side effects of tib/fib surgery is knee/leg pain due to the intramedullary rod. During surgery, this rod is inserted through the anterior portion of the knee and into the center of the tibia thus stabilizing the tibia for healing. If he can dodge this side effect, that is a hurdle cleared towards a full recovery. May 1, 2025: Rehab video 6.5 months post injury This video shows by far his most intense workouts to date. What's notable compared to his previous rehab video is that he has progressed to fast-twitch workouts involving jumping, sprinting, and bursting off the line. A big part of his elite game is his quickness and explosiveness, so it's great to see him entering this stage of rehab. Advertisement He still has some deficiencies as there appears to be a slight hitch in his gait. His left leg is still weaker and possibly less coordinated, but those issues should improve quickly. Outlook Next on the team schedule is OTA (organized team activities) on May 28-30. Hutchinson should participate at least in limited fashion. If he is limited, that's not a cause for concern as there is no rehab urgency with the season still four months away. Expect him to be full-go for training camp. Off the field, there is still business left to be done as I expect the Lions to give him the biggest non-QB contract in NFL history this offseason. AMIK ROBERTSON January 18, 2025: Left humerus fracture April 12, 2025: Instagram post - 3 months post injury Amik Robertson insta rehab Robertson has been posting confident messages lately. At three months, the fracture should be healed and he likely participates fully in OTA on May 28. I expect a full recovery with no concerns heading into next season. Advertisement With only one year left on his deal, he could be a candidate for an extension as he enters next season at just 27 years old. But the Lions may try to save salary cap space here with the hopes that Ennis Rakestraw can take over the position in 2026.
