Miami Heat at center of alleged multi-million-dollar sports memorabilia heist, analyst says
The Miami Heat organization is at the center of what some are calling the largest sports memorabilia heist in U.S. history, after an NBA analyst alleged on national radio that authenticated team collectibles were stolen and sold over an extended period. NBA analyst Amin Elhassan broke the news on The Dan LeBatard Show, saying Heat memorabilia—including items from the NBA Finals—was stolen and sold over the course of at least 18 months. "Authenticated memorabilia stolen from the Miami Heat. Oh really? And sold for many, many, many, many millions of dollars," Elhassan said. He added that some of the stolen items included full sets of game-worn jerseys from multiple players, which is extremely rare in the collector world. "You never see people with this much stuff. Right? You might get a worn jersey, but to get, like, a game-worn full set—NBA Finals? From multiple players?" he said. Elhassan also claimed that a Miami police officer and an individual with ties to the NBA may be among those involved. At Collectors Club in Wynwood, CBS News Miami spoke with sports memorabilia expert Travis Nichols, who explained how the underground market makes it difficult for teams to recover stolen items. "As technology increases, people are able to sell things much easier than they used to be," Nichols said. "It's not like you have to know a guy. You can go on different marketplaces online or go to in-person shows, show them at your table. It's really rough because some of the stuff is untraceable when it's sold." "You know jerseys don't have identification numbers and that's what makes it really rough for the Heat — the organization — to get their items back." The City of Miami Police Department said it currently has no information regarding allegations that an officer may be involved. The Miami Heat organization stated it cannot comment on an ongoing investigation.

Millions of Miami Heat memorabilia stolen in alleged heist
The Miami Heat reportedly lost priceless memorabilia in an alleged heist. NBA analyst Amin Elhassan told the Dan LeBatard Show Monday (July 29) described the incident was "perhaps one of the largest heists of this kind," in which millions of Miami Heat merchandise were stolen. "This one concerns memorabilia. Authenticated memorabilia stolen from the Miami Heat, and sold for many, many, many, many, many millions of dollars," Elhassan said per a Sports Illustrated report. According to Elhassan, he claims that not just one person is behind this heist and that they had insider knowledge. "It was described to me, this is one of the largest, if not the largest, memorabilia heist in the history of this country in any sport," Elhassan continued. "Some of the people involved include a Miami police officer and someone with ties to the NBA." Elhassan went on to explain that key players' jerseys, such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Shaquille O'Neal, and Chris Bosh, could have been sold on both the regular and black markets. However, it hasn't been confirmed which, if any, of those players' jerseys were sold. Timless pieces, such as NBA Finals jerseys, were also among those stolen, according to the NBA analyst. "Game worn [NBA] Finals stuff, and this person was taking them and selling them both within the regular market and within the black market," Elhassan said. "What red flagged within the memorabilia committee is you never see people with this much stuff, right? You might get a game-worn jersey, but to get, like, a game worn, full set, NBA Finals for multiple players?" The Miami Heat went to the NBA Finals seven times: 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2020, and 2023. The franchise has won three times overall in 2006, 2012, and 2013. It's unclear if the incident is under investigation at this time or when it exactly occurred. Sources: Stolen Miami Heat memorabilia at center of federal probe
Federal authorities are conducting a massive memorabilia theft investigation involving items stolen from the Miami Heat, sources have confirmed to cllct. The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office have questioned people who purchased items from someone with access to the Heat's uniform equipment room, according to those sources. The investigation was first reported publicly by Amin Elhassan on "The Dan LeBatard Show" on Monday. Elhassan called the theft 'one of the largest heists of this kind,' and said it involved jerseys worn during the NBA Finals. Over the years, a large amount of items allegedly have been taken from the room and sold, sometimes publicly in online marketplaces such as eBay and WhatNot, as well as on other auction sites. Sold game-used items run the gamut from superstars such as LeBron James, whose jerseys sold for seven figures, to role players such as Gabe Vincent, sources confirmed. Many of the items were taken by an individual with access to the uniforms, who often was unaware of their full value, according to sources. The items were then passed on to an individual or individuals who photo-matched said items and then further profited by selling them as from a particular game or set of games. Sources say the Heat, in most cases, were unaware the items had gone missing and were being sold. A Heat representative told cllct the team cannot comment on the active investigation. Messages left for the FBI and the U.S Attorney's Office were not immediately returned. Others teams have allowed jerseys to completely leave their facilities. Game-used jerseys are property of the team, but are often removed from facilities without team consent or are given to a player without permission — either gifted or to be sold. While the massive prices from game-used jerseys have driven teams to pay more attention to their inventory — the NBA has a deal with Sotheby's that allows the league to auction off current jerseys — the question is what can be clawed back from their past, especially with many of the most valuable pieces of memorabilia changing hands several times.
