Before Jaya, there was Maya: Who was Amitabh Bachchan's first love? Biographer says, ‘They could have married but…'

Amitabh Bachchan , one of Indian cinema's most legendary icons, has shared a celebrated partnership with actress Jaya Bachchan for more than five decades. Their story began on the sets of the 1971 film Guddi, eventually leading to a wedding in 1973. However, as biographer Hanif Zaveri recently disclosed in an interview with the YouTube channel Meri Saheli, the actor's first experience with love predates not only his marriage but even his entry into Bollywood. Before moving to Mumbai to chase his film dreams, Amitabh spent his early working years in Calcutta (now Kolkata), where he was employed and earned a modest salary of around ₹250 to ₹300 each month. During this period, he fell deeply in love with a woman named Maya , who worked for British Airways. According to Hanif, their relationship blossomed in the simplicity of those early days, long before stardom complicated life. The residence was offered to him by a family friend of his mother, Teji Bachchan. Maya often visited him there, but because the woman who owned the house was close to his mother, Amitabh feared word might reach his family about the romance. Worried and anxious, he eventually made the decision to move out for the sake of privacy. At that point, he was preparing for his first movie, Saat Hindustani , and shared screen space with Anwar Ali, the brother of actor Mehmood. As per Zaveri, Amitabh confided in Anwar about his concerns. Understanding the situation, Anwar offered him a place to stay. This apartment had originally been arranged by Mehmood for his brother, and Amitabh stayed there temporarily. Relationship Challenges and Growing Doubts Amitabh and Maya continued their relationship for a while. There were even murmurs among their friends that marriage could have been a possibility. But Amitabh's film career had just begun and wasn't yet stable. Additionally, his shy personality often clashed with Maya's assertiveness. Zaveri noted that Maya would speak to Amitabh freely—even harshly at times—without considering who else was present. This behavior didn't sit well with his friends, especially Anwar Ali, who believed that Maya's dominant nature would not align well with Amitabh's reserved demeanor or fit into the Bachchan household. "He and Maya were together for a while, and perhaps they could have gotten married also, but Amitabh wasn't stable in his career at the time," said Zaveri and added, "In those days, Amitabh was a very shy man, and Maya was quite cunning." As the relationship became strained, Anwar advised Amitabh during a shoot in Goa to end things with Maya. He felt that Maya might become a hurdle in both Amitabh's personal and professional life. This conversation planted seeds of doubt in the actor's mind. Eventually, Amitabh grew distant, and soon after, the couple separated. New Beginnings Amitabh's debut film, Saat Hindustani, was released in 1969, officially launching his journey into cinema. A few years later, in 1973, he tied the knot with Jaya Bhaduri, beginning a lifelong partnership that would stand the test of time and fame.

Amitabh Bachchan's first love was a British Airways employee named Maya, says celebrity biographer: ‘She would scold him in front of people, he broke up with her'

Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan have been married for over 50 years after they first met on the set of the 1971 film Guddi, but Jaya wasn't the first woman that he fell in love with. Celebrity biographer Hanif Zaveri, in a recent interview, shared the story of Amitabh Bachchan's first love, and what led to his break up with that woman. He shared that the two fell in love before Amitabh's move to Bombay (now Mumbai), but broke up even before the release of his first film, Saat Hindustani. In a chat with the YouTube channel Meri Saheli, Hanif shared that his love story with a woman named Maya started back when he was working in Calcutta (now Kolkata), and earned around Rs 250-300 per month. 'She was working at British Airways at the time. Amitabh Bachchan really loved her, and she did too,' Hanif shared. He added that after his Kolkata job, Amitabh moved to Mumbai to find work in the movies and was initially staying at a bungalow in Juhu, which belonged to his mother Teji Bachchan's friend. Since Maya would visit him so often, and his mother's friend lived in the same house, Amitabh was 'scared' of his mother finding out about his relationship. 'So he decided to move out of the house,' Hanif said. At this time, Amitabh was working on his debut film Saat Hindustani, where he was sharing the screen with Mehmood's brother Anwar Ali. 'He told Anwar about his worries and Anwar understood his concerns. So Anwar gave him a place to stay at his house,' he shared and added that Anwar had gotten an apartment from Mehmood, and Amitabh stayed in this house for a while. Sometimes, she wouldn't even bother who was sitting with him and would speak with him as she wanted, she would scold him too. Anwar Ali, and all of Amitabh's other friends didn't really like this. And Amitabh was also getting nervous about this.' Hanif recalled Anwar talking to him about his and shared, 'He told me that when they were shooting in Goa for Saat Hindustani, he told Amitabh to break up with Maya. He felt that she wouldn't fit into Bachchan's family and if Amitabh was to go ahead in the movies, problems might increase. And Amitabh also felt that there was something missing. Eventually, he started distancing himself from Maya and they broke up, and went their separate ways.' Amitabh's debut film was released in 1969. He later married Jaya in 1973.

In early 1970s, a compelling script circulated among Bollywood's elite. Despite its gripping narrative, the film was turned down by five leading actors of the time. The reasons varied, some were already committed to other projects, while others were uncertain about the film's unconventional storyline. Eventually, the role landed with an actor who, at that point, had a series of unsuccessful films and was contemplating leaving the industry altogether. Who is this actor? This actor was Amitabh Bachchan and the film was Zanjeer, released in 1973. Written by the legendary duo Salim-Javed and helmed by Prakash Mehra. Zanjeer was produced on a modest budget of Rs 90 lakh. Despite the initial rejections, the film became a massive success, grossing over Rs 17 crore at the box office. Amitabh's portrayal of the brooding police officer, Inspector Vijay Khanna, struck a chord with audiences and critics alike, earning him the title of Bollywood's 'Angry Young Man.' Who were the 5 superstars that rejected Zanjeer? The film's journey to success was not without its challenges. Before Amitabh's involvement, the lead role was offered to prominent actors such as Dharmendra, Late Rajesh Khanna, Late Dev Anand, and Late Raaj Kumar, all of whom declined for various reasons. Even the female lead saw several actresses turning down the role due to scheduling conflicts. Ultimately, Jaya Bhaduri was cast opposite Amitabh, and their on-screen chemistry added depth to the narrative. Veteran actor Pran played a significant supporting role, further enhancing the film's appeal. What was the storyline? The film follows the story of Vijay Khanna, an upright police officer haunted by his parents' murder. Transferred to new city, he clashes with the crime lord Teja, while forming bonds with reformed gangster Sher Khan and witnessing Mala played by Jaya Bhaduri. As Vijay uncovers Teja's connection to his tragic past, he sets out for justice and vengeance. How did Amitabh Bachchan's career reshape after Zanjeer? After Zanjeer, he was cast in a series of intense, action-driven roles in films like Deewaar, Sholay, and Trishul, cementing his status as a superstar and transforming him into one of the most iconic actors in Indian cinema history, which has managed to hold its IMDb rating on 7.5.
