Expedite Melapura drinking water project, says GTD

Mysuru: Former minister and Chamundeshwari MLA GT Devegowda on Wednesday directed officials to expedite the completion of the Melapura drinking water project to provide drinking water to peripheral layouts such as Rammanahalli, Vasantha Nagar, and others on the city outskirts. He also instructed the preparation of a new detailed project report (DPR) to ensure water supply to neglected layouts. During a meeting held at the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Zone-3 office, attended by officials from MCC, Mysuru Development Authority (MDA), and Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB), detailed discussions were held on providing water to the city's outskirts. The MLA issued several directives following the deliberations. Devegowda emphasised the need for adequate water supply to MCC, local bodies, MDA, and private layouts, stating, "Our priority is to provide water. Some areas should receive water from the Melapura supply." He urged officials to complete works under the Amrut-2 scheme at a faster pace. KUWSDB officials informed the meeting that water is being supplied from Melapura to the German Press. From there, it needs to reach Rammanahalli, Vasantha Nagar, Police Layout, Nadanahalli, and KBL Layout. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stylish New Mobility Scooters Available for Seniors (Take a Look) Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Search Now Undo He noted that pipeline work for a tank installed in Rammanahalli is complete, and water supply can commence once minor works are finalised. Additionally, a joint DPR by MDA and KUWSDB will be prepared for other areas and submitted to MDA for approval, after which work can begin under the Amrut-2 scheme. A plan to supply 5 MLD (million litres per day) of water to Rammanahalli and other layouts has been included. Works are also under way to supply water to Galigarahundi, Vasantha Nagar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar, and Police Layout. Another project, costing Rs 34 crore, involves constructing six tanks to supply water to areas like Hanchya, Kalisiddanahundi, and others. Responding to this, MLA Devegowda stressed preventing water shortages and assured that DPRs submitted for water supply to various areas from Rammanahalli would be discussed in MDA meetings for necessary approvals. Currently, water is being supplied from the Kabini River to layouts like Srirampura and RT Nagar. Officials requested the release of Rs150 crore for an additional 60 MLD water supply project. Devegowda assured that he would discuss the matter with the DC and bring it to the attention of the district in-charge minister to ensure immediate fund release. Ongoing works under the Hale Unduwadi project and requests for space allocation for water projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) were also discussed. Correspondence regarding these are in progress. Under JJM, a tank near Devegowda Circle will be constructed to supply water to 32 areas.

Youth Congress activists protest against Minister demanding solution to sea incursion threat at Kannamaly

Youth Congress activists staged a protest against Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine here on Saturday (June 21, 2025) alleging delay on the part of the government in addressing the worsening sea incursion situation at Kannamaly, Cheriyakadavu and Kattiparambu areas. The Minister was attending a programme in connection with the Amrut-2 scheme at the office of the Chief Engineer of the Kerala Water Authority in the city when a group of Youth Congress activists barged into the venue and raised slogans against the government for not taking steps to find a proper solution to the problems faced by the coastal communities at Kannamaly owing to the sea incursion. Police removed the protesters, who blamed the Minister for not fulfilling the long-standing demand of residents to protect the vulnerable shore using a tetrapod-based seawall. While tetrapods have been erected around 7 kilometres, nearly as much remains to be covered. The Minister later told the media that the government would take steps to initiate the second phase of the tetrapod-based seawall in the remaining 2.5 km stretch at Chellanam. 'We have received the study report from the National Centre for Coastal Research, Chennai, for laying the tetrapod seawall in the remaining stretch,' he said.

Amrut-2: New drinking water project for Guntur

Guntur: In a move to address the growing drinking water needs of the city, state govt has given green signal to take up new drinking water project under Amrut-2 scheme . The project will be taken up with a cost of 330 crore under Concessionaire Hybrid Annuity Model (Cham). The govt has moved to Cham in order to lessen its burden. The contract agency will take up the project with its own funds and recover the amount with annual interest in a phased manner after completion of the project. The govt had also set a condition that the contract agency would be responsible for the maintenance of the project for 10 years. The govt would not pay any additional charges towards maintenance of the scheme. Meanwhile, the GMC proposed to construct a new filtration facility near Gorantla village. About 16 acres of land has been earmarked for the new project. The city's entire drinking supplies depend on the existing filtration facility in Takkellapadu reservoir located on the outskirts of the city. The facility has a capacity to treat about 130 megaliters per day (MLD) water while another plant at Sangam Jagarlamudi village has capacity of 13 MLD. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like La Libertad: Calcula cuánto podrías ganar invirtiendo solo $100 en Amazon CFD Market Sunny Reservar Ahora Undo However, the GMC is unable to tap more than 100MLD from both the plants while the city's requirements shot up to nearly 160-200 MLD. The civic authorities are anticipating that the city's drinking water requirements will further increase in the coming days particularly in the wake of development of capital city. With Guntur and Vijayawada being the nearest cities to the capital city, people are likely to migrate to cities in view of the existing infrastructure such as healthcare and educational institutions. "We are planning the new scheme keeping in view the requirements of the city for another two to three decades," said commissioner Puli Srinivasulu. In fact, the residents in the 10-villages that were merged into Guntur city about a decade ago, were unable to fetch sufficient drinking water from the civic body's facilities. The GMC planned an over-head reservoir on a hillock near Gorantla with a view to supply water to the neighbouring area via gravity..
