Amit Shah calls for nationwide expansion of cooperative movement based on 'five Ps'
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], July 6(ANI): On the occasion of the fourth foundation day of the Ministry of Cooperation, Government of India, a grand Sakhkar Samelan was organized in Anand, known as the Milk Capital of India, in the presence of Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Inaugurating various development works of the world-renowned Amul Dairy, Shah called for expanding the cooperative movement nationwide based on the five Ps - People, PACS, Platform, Policy, and Prosperity, said a release from the Gujarat CMO. Shah stated that the convergence of the fourth anniversary of the Ministry of Cooperation, the 60th anniversary of the National Dairy Development Board, and the 150th birth anniversary year of Sardar Patel has led to numerous initiatives in Anand through this cooperative conference. The Ministry of Cooperation has been working over the past four years on the foundation of the five Ps - People (service-oriented), PACS (strengthening Primary Agricultural Credit Societies), Platform (digital platform), Policy (new policies), and Prosperity (societal prosperity). Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the scope of cooperative activities has been expanding. Union Home and CM Patel jointly inaugurated Amul Dairy's extension plants for chocolate, milk, curd, and mozzarella cheese. Additionally, they inaugurated the Maniben Patel Bhavan at the NDDB headquarters. The foundation stone of the national organization of milk cooperative societies was also laid by both dignitaries. They unveiled the logo and presented the registration certificate for the Sardar Patel Cooperative Milk Federation. Furthermore, the registration certificate for the Kutch Salt Producers Cooperative Society, initiated with the noble intent of involving salt workers from the Rann of Kutch in the cooperative movement, was also handed over. Using Amul Dairy as an example, he mentioned that 36 lakh women from Gujarat and 20 lakh from other parts of India, a total of 56 lakh women, generate an annual turnover of Rs 80,000 crore through milk production. This is expected to rise to Rs1 lakh crore next year, with the profit directly benefiting these 56 lakh women engaged in cooperative activities. Highlighting the achievements of the cooperative sector during the conference, he noted that the tradition of cooperation dates back to Vedic times. Our cooperative culture of dining, working, thinking, and living together has been given legal status by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the establishment of the Ministry of Cooperation in 2021. Over 31 crore members are associated with more than 8.40 lakh cooperative societies. These societies are contributing to the nation's economic development in areas such as milk, banking, sugar mills, and digital payments. More than 60 initiatives have been launched in the four years of this ministry, said the release. Amit Shah appealed to cooperative leaders to adopt three key principles: transparency, adoption of technology, and member-centric functioning. He stressed that cooperation cannot be sustained long-term without these elements. This spirit of cooperation should reach every village from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Dwarka to Kamakhya. In many countries, cooperative activities have failed due to a lack of transparency. He paid tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 124th birth anniversary, saying that Dr. Mookerjee played a crucial role in integrating West Bengal with India and making Kashmir an inseparable part of the nation. He sacrificed his life with the slogan, 'There cannot be two constitutions, two flags, and two prime ministers in one country.' He had resigned from Pandit Nehru's cabinet and founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which today, with 12 crore members, is the world's largest political party. He congratulated all involved in launching Amul, NDDB, and the Kutch Salt Cooperative Society, noting that this initiative would be a major success for salt-producing farmers. He also expressed his resolve to strengthen India's cooperative sector and set an example for the world. Expressing pride in the achievements of Gujarat's cooperative sector, the Chief Minister stated that Gujarat led the non-cooperation movement during the freedom struggle and is now at the forefront of cooperation. The state's cooperative sector has a turnover of Rs 4 lakh crore, over 27 lakh new bank accounts have been opened, and deposits exceeding Rs 12,000 crore have been collected. Daily milk collection reaches 325 lakh liters, and women-led milk societies have increased by 21 percent with a 43 percent rise in their income. He added that under the leadership of PM Modi and Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, gram panchayats across the country are being integrated with the cooperative movement. Over two lakh PACS have energized the rural economy, now offering services like petrol pumps, Jan Aushadhi Kendras, water projects, and digital payments. In the cooperative banking sector, digitalization has brought modern banking services to villages. Through the e-Cooperative portal, the state government has enabled online registration, audits, and reporting for societies, enhancing transparency and efficiency. The Chief Minister lauded the four years of success of the Ministry of Cooperation established under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and congratulated Union Cooperation Minister Amitbhai Shah for realizing the vision of 'Sahkhar Thi Samrudhhi.' He stated that the ministry has significantly contributed to strengthening the rural economy and connecting farmers, animal husbandry, and women to cooperative activities, which has become a new model of development for the nation. The year 2025 is celebrated as the International Year of Cooperatives, and the Chief Minister mentioned that India will become a global example of the cooperative model. He further added that under the guidance of Amit Shah, the foundation stone of the country's first Tribhuvan Sahkari University has been laid, which will develop skilled human resources for the cooperative sector. The innovative projects of NDDB and Amul will elevate Gujarat's dairy, agriculture, and animal husbandry sectors to new heights. The mantra of ' Sahakar Thi Samruddhi ' will be realized in every village through the Ministry of Cooperation and will play a vital role in achieving the goal of making India Viksit Bharat by 2047. On the occasion of the fourth foundation day of the Cooperation Department, Chief Minister began by paying tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary, remembering his vision of 'There cannot be two constitutions and two flags in one nation' and his dedication to an undivided India. Referring to the 150th birth anniversary celebration of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Chief Minister stated that under Sardar Saheb's guidance, the foundation of cooperation was laid on Gujarat's soil, which today is making a significant contribution to national progress. Make transparency, tech and people's welfare integral to 'work culture' of co-op sector: Shah
Union minister Amit Shah on Sunday urged cooperative sector leaders to make transparency, technology and the interest of its members high up in their "work culture" to achieve success. Shah made the remarks at the campus of Amul Dairy here while addressing an event to mark the fourth foundation day of the Ministry of Cooperation. The minister for cooperation and home affairs also launched a newly formed multi-state cooperative body named Sardar Patel Cooperative Dairy Federation Limited and unveiled its logo. "We have to strongly implement three things. Transparency, acceptance of technology and keeping the members (farmers and societies of the cooperative sector) of cooperative institutions in the centre of all activities," he said, adding that the lack of transparency "harms" the spirit of cooperation. Without technology, there is no prosperity, and cooperation could not survive in competition, he said. He said the ten initiatives launched during the event, including the start of a salt cooperative in Gujarat, will lead to the creation of a strong brand such as Amul. Shah said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the cooperative sector has seen the registration of 2 lakh primary agricultural credit societies (PACS), the foundation of Tribhuvan Sahkari University, the first national cooperative university, and the creation of three new national cooperatives in the dairy sector. The newly launched dairy federation will work to complete a cycle of organised market, input services, fair purchase of milk, difference in price and "circular economy" in the dairy sector, he declared. Shah urged the sector to follow the five 'P's - 'people,' 'PACs,' 'platforms', 'policy' and 'prosperity' - for it to thrive. People, he said, was to mean that the citizens of the country are the beneficiaries of all these initiatives. By PACS, he meant that his government was strengthening these bodies. Platform, Shah said, was meant to provide digital and national launchpads for every type of cooperative activity, and the word policy meant providing maximum benefit to the members. The last one, prosperity, stood for "our 36 lakh sisters who work hard every day in Gujarat and 20 lakh sisters in other parts of the country." "Due to their hard work, an annual turnover of Rs 80,000 crore was achieved (by Amul), which will cross Rs 1 lakh crore the next year. This profit is directly going into the accounts of the 56 lakh sisters," he said. The minister said four years ago on this day, Modi laid the foundation of the Ministry of Cooperation with the mantra of 'Prosperity through Cooperation,' giving a new life to the cooperative system. He said in the cooperation ministry's four years, the Centre has taken more than 60 initiatives based on these five 'P's. Shah also paid tributes to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on the occasion of his birth anniversary and said Kashmir would have never become an integral part of India without Mookerjee, he asserted. "Mookerjee sacrificed his life for Kashmir, raising the slogan 'Ek desh mein do Vidhan, do Pradhan, aur Do Nishan nahi chalenge' (There can't be two Constitutions, two flags and two leaders in the same country)," he said. The minister said all credit goes to Mookerjee and Swami Pranavananda for West Bengal being a part of India. "Mookerjee (who was then Industry Minister) resigned from Jawaharlal Nehru's Cabinet in protest against the policy of appeasement. The party, Jan Sangh, which he started with 10 members, has today become the world's largest political party, as the BJP, with a membership of 12 crore people," he said. Shah also inaugurated some new infrastructure expansion projects of Amul, such as a mozzarella cheese manufacturing facility, a fully automated ultra-high processing (UHT) plant, an ultra-modern cheese warehouse in Khatraj and the extension of the Amul chocolate plant at Mogar. Amul or Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd procures over 320 lakh litres of milk daily from 36 lakh farmers and 18 member unions. He said from milk to banking, sugar mills to marketing and cash credit to digital payments, cooperative societies today were contributing to the economic development of the country with full potential.

He can outsmart a calculator: 13-year-old prodigy rules numbers game
Vadodara: While most teenagers are still learning basic algebra, 13-year-old Ayan Mohsin Vahora from Anand is busy performing complex mental calculations faster than a calculator — and even determining the day of the week for dates from centuries ago. Whether it's memorizing 500 random digits in under 30 minutes or solving intricate equations in seconds, Ayan's brain seems wired for numbers. His extraordinary talent recently earned him the Champion of Champions (COC) title at the 20th UCMAS Mental Maths State-Level Competition held in Gujarat. Competing in the grand level—the most advanced and demanding category — Ayan not only took home the coveted trophy but also won a cash prize of Rs 11,000. "This achievement is a dream come true for us," said Dr Mohsin Vahora, Ayan's father and a veterinary doctor at Amul Dairy. The Universal Concepts in Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS) is a global child development programme that uses abacus-based visual arithmetic to enhance cognitive skills in children aged 4 to 13. It sharpens memory, concentration, and logical thinking — alongside improving mathematical ability. "At the state-level competition, the grand level is the toughest category," explained Dr Vahora. "Participants are given just eight minutes to solve a maximum number of problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and square roots — sometimes with up to six-digit numbers and decimals." Ayan's top score in this gruelling challenge earned him the COC title — granted to the highest scorer across the state. But his success doesn't stop there. Ayan has bagged multiple UCMAS titles and participated in several national and international contests. In Dec last year, he competed in an international mental maths championship in New Delhi, featuring 6,000 students from more than 30 countries — where he secured the second runner-up position. Back home, the young prodigy continues to set new challenges for himself. In one recent feat, he multiplied a 50-digit random number by a single digit in under two and a half minutes — all in his head.

Amul Dairy to set up Rs 100cr processing plant in Assam
Vadodara: The Kaira District Milk Producers Union Limited, popularly known as Amul Dairy, is set to establish a dairy processing plant in Assam with an investment ranging between Rs 75 crore and Rs 100 crore. The move is aimed at boosting dairy production in the region and expanding Amul's footprint in the eastern belt of the country. The Assam govt has allotted a 20-bigha parcel of land on lease to Amul Dairy at the Institute of Farm Management Campus in Rani, near Guwahati. The decision to lease the land was approved earlier this month by the state cabinet as part of a broader initiative to enhance the dairy sector under the Advantage Assam 2.0 programme. Amul Dairy chairman Vipul Patel confirmed the development, stating that the Assam plant is part of the cooperative's ongoing expansion across India. "Our new projects, including the Chittoor Dairy in Andhra Pradesh and the ice cream plant in Pune, are already operational. Paneer and sweets production has also begun at the Pune facility," he said. According to the agreement signed with the Assam govt, the new plant is expected to benefit around 20,000 dairy farmers in the state. Initially, the plant will have a milk processing capacity of one lakh litres per day, with plans for future expansion. "The plant in Assam will become operational within the next one and a half years," said Amul Dairy managing director Amit Vyas, told TOI. He added that the facility will play a significant role in strengthening Amul's operations in the northeastern region.
