‘Amara' green drive starts on World Environment Day

Mangaluru: A city-wide plantation campaign under the 'Amara' banner started at the new DC office premises on the occasion of World Environment Day on Thursday. Deputy commissioner and Zilla Panchayat CEO Anandh K inaugurated the programme by planting a tree in the DC office premises. Anandh said that under the leadership of Prof Smitha Hegde, environmental enthusiasts organised a campaign named 'Amara', where various organisations in the district identified suitable areas for planting and nurturing trees. He noted that with the onset of the rainy season, the climate is ideal for planting trees. He noted that the increasing exploitation of nature is damaging the environment and affecting daily lives. Hence, there is a need to increase the greenery on Earth, he said. Deputy conservator of forests Anthony S Mariyappa said that in Dakshina Kannada forest area, 5 lakh trees are planted annually. This year, the forest department is distributing 1 lakh saplings through various organisations for planting in different locations. He highlighted that every year, millions of trees are cut down for various development projects. In response, the forest department undertakes tree planting activities. For the development of the road between Mangaluru and Bengaluru, about 1,39,000 trees were cut down over an area of approximately 100 acres. He emphasised that while development is important, it is our responsibility to maintain ecological balance by planting and nurturing trees. Prof Smitha Hegde, director of research at CFAL and a key figure in the 'Amara' campaign, said that under the 'Amara' initiative, the goal is to plant 10,000 trees in the Dakshina Kannada by August this year. With the cooperation of various organisations, 4,500 locations have already been identified. Trees will be planted along the road from Baliga Stores in the city to the airport road, while 350 trees will be planted in the DC office premises. The focus is on planting fruit trees like jackfruit, mango, and breadfruit that grow locally, she said. The event was attended by additional deputy commissioner Santhosh Kumar G, Mangaluru City Corporation commissioner Ravichandra Nayak, deputy director of the animal husbandry department Dr Arun Kumar Shetty, environmental enthusiast Jeeth Milan Roche, and key members of various environmental organisations.

DK in race to become complete literate district

Mangaluru: To make Dakshina Kannada a completely literate district, the zilla panchayat has initiated a Google survey to ascertain the number of illiterates. Zilla panchayat CEO Anandh K said declaring Dakshina Kannada district as a completely literate district is a significant task. To achieve this, every citizen of the DK district must compulsorily provide information about illiterates in their households by scanning the QR code via Google and submitting the information by June 10, he said. "The sole purpose of the survey is to determine the total number of illiterates in the district, and the public should not be confused or fearful. Those who have already learned or are learning through the literacy department should not be included in the list. The department aims for Dakshina Kannada to be the first district in Karnataka to be declared completely literate," the CEO said. "If illiterates wish to learn, arrangements will be made for their education. Even if they are unable to learn, filling out the Google form is mandatory. The form must include details such as the illiterate person's name, the name of their taluk, village panchayat/town/municipality, the nearest school to their residence, father's name, mother's name, current address, age, gender, mobile number, Aadhaar number, caste, occupation, and whether they are differently-abled," he said. If the literacy rate exceeds 95%, then the district will be declared completely literate as per departmental orders. The CEO said that further information can be obtained from the District Adult Education Officer's office (0824-2451233).

Mangaluru: Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP launched the Urban & District Advancement through Localising Innovations (UDAL) initiative and the DC's Fellowship Programme virtually on Saturday. UDAL, which is being implemented through organising partner InUnity-Innovation for Community and Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), is a platform for students and innovators to work on real-world civic issues in Dakshina Kannada, mentored by experts and supported by the district administration. Themes focused under the UDAL are sustainable city, urban city planning, public healthcare service, and disaster management. The DC said, "We explored opportunities to harness Mangaluru's capabilities for a long time. Our objective is to establish a structured framework that enables institutions to work alongside administrators for technological integration. We face numerous challenges, including waterlogging, difficulties in handling solid waste disposal, and various other concerns that require dedicated attention from individuals who can persistently identify solutions and address shortcomings. Engaging with educational institutions and collaborating with young students to comprehend challenges forms the core objectives.
