Legendary film actress Saroja Devi laid to rest with full state honours

Mandya: Legendary film actress B Saroja Devi was laid to rest in her native village of Dashavara in Mandya district with full state honours on Tuesday. The 87-year-old actress passed away due to age-related ailments at her home in Malleswaram, Bengaluru, on July 14. Her funeral was held in accordance with Vokkaliga traditions, with burial rites performed. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, along with prominent personalities from the Karnataka film industry including Jayamala, Rockline Venkatesh, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce President M Narasimhalu, and film producer Basant Kumar Patil, paid their final respects. Born on January 7, 1938, in Bengaluru, Saroja Devi rose to become one of Indian cinema's most celebrated and iconic actresses. She made her film debut in the early 1950s and went on to act in over 180 films across multiple languages. Known for her elegance, powerful screen presence, and versatility, she quickly gained widespread fame. Her performances in films such as 'Sasural', 'Kittur Rani Chennamma', 'Anbe Vaa,' and 'Enga Veettu Pillai' are remembered as milestones in Indian cinema. Saroja Devi was particularly acclaimed for her portrayals in historical and mythological films, where she played strong female characters with conviction and grace. She received several prestigious honours, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri from the Government of India, and the Dr Rajkumar Lifetime Achievement Award from the Karnataka government. Following the news of her passing, condolences poured in from across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, political leaders, and prominent figures from the Indian film industry paid tribute to her, acknowledging her enduring legacy and invaluable contributions to Indian cinema. Speaking to reporters after paying homage at her residence in Bengaluru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah described her demise as 'a major loss to the entire film industry'. 'B Saroja Devi entered the film industry at a very young age and served it for nearly 70 years. She earned the title of 'Abhinaya Saraswati' early in her career and became a multi-talented actress who worked in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi films,' he added.

Saroja Devi and MGR in the movie 'Anbe Vaa' UDHAGAMANDALAM: While mourning the demise of legendary South Indian actress B Saroja Devi, Nilgirians fondly recall the filming of the 'Rajavin Parvai' song for the Tamil movie 'Anbe Vaa' in the Government Botanical Garden (GBG) in 1965. More than 10,000 people gathered at the GBG to witness the filming of the song featuring M G Ramachandran (MGR) and B Saroja Devi. In his book 'Misty Memoirs,' D Thiagarajan writes, 'During the shooting of 'Rajavin Parvai Raniyin Pakkam' at the Botanical Garden, more than ten thousand people crowded the shooting spot. I have never seen such a large crowd for any film shooting.' Dharmalingam Venugopal, who also was among the crowd, says, 'Among the unforgettable movies filmed in Ooty, 'Anbe Vaa' provided a great experience for the local people. The shooting of the famous song 'Rajavin Parvai' at the Italian garden in GBG, featuring a grand chariot, artificial mist, and regal costumes, was an out-of-this-world experience for the local audience.' R A Das recalls 'The song 'Chittukuruvi Mutham Koduthu' from the 1964 classic 'Pudhiya Paravi,' which stars Sivaji Ganesan and Saroja Devi, was filmed near a tribal hamlet close to Ooty. CHENNAI: Yesteryear's superstar, Saroja Devi, who has acted in over 200 films in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, passed away in Bengaluru on Monday. She was born in 1938 and her original name was Radha Devi. After making her debut in a Kannada film 'Mahakavi Kalidas' in 1955, she went on to act with superstars MGR, NTR and Sivaji Ganesan. She reached superstardom with the success of Nadodi Mannan with MGR in 1958. MGR-Saroja Devi was considered a superhit pair in Tamil Nadu, as most of their 26 films together were super hits. They include all-time favourites like Nadodi Mannan, Anbe Vaa, and Enga Veettu Pillai. She was ruling the tinsel world in the 1960s and 1970s. Saroja Devi's last film was Surya-starrer Adhavan in 2009. She had been conferred Padmasri and Pama Bhushan awards and in 2008 the Union govt honoured her with lifetime award. She was affectionately called Kannadathu Paingili (Pretty parrot from Karnataka) and Abinaya Saraswathi by her fans. When she was at her peak for about 17 years, Saroja Devi is said to have commanded a pay cheque much more than her contemporary heros. During her 50-year career, Saroja Devi earned a reputation for a fine acting and and expressions.
