Why hiring Davide Ancelotti at Rangers would unlike Andrew Cavenagh
Ancelotti survived long enough to lead Reggiana in a make-or-break game against Venezia at the Mirabello Stadium. His team scored three times in the opening 45 minutes of an encounter Don Carlo later described as one of the most important days of his coaching career. Promotion to Serie A earned Ancelotti a crack at the Parma job. He lasted two seasons before he was sacked. That's the thing with football management. To hear people speak now, you'd think that the godfather of modern football won all those Champions Leagues, titles in Europe's top five nations and Club World Cups by spending the last three decades raising an eyebrow at just the right time. The truth is that elite coaches are not spoon-fed wisdom, expertise and excellence from the moment they leave the womb. Their know-how is shaped by those early days spent with their head perched on a guillotine waiting for the blade to fall. Davide Ancelotti clearly has the intelligence and potential to follow in his old man's footsteps in Glasgow. He speaks five languages. He is a smart, urbane, tactically astute coach respected by some of the biggest names in Europe. The problem here is clear. Even if the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree, no one has the first idea if it's ripe. Rangers are not Reggiana. Ibrox is not place where a young coach can make his mistakes away from the glare of media scrutiny or demanding supporters. Regardless of whether his previous clubs were Everton, Napoli, Bayern or Real Madrid, Ancelotti Jr was never the man responsible for the consequential decisions. He has never known how it feels to be the chosen one with thousands of eyes burning a hole in the back of his head as anxiety grows over the team's inability to break down a low block on a dry and bobbly – or artificial – pitch. In the hazy glow of a takeover, level-headed supporters speak of giving things time. If they see evidence of a plan taking shape, they'll make more allowances for the new people than they ever did for the old. How much allowance is contingent on what the naked eye tells them. If Ancelotti Jr finds himself heading into October trailing Celtic, with another title race disappearing down the plug hole, the good intentions might not last long. Read more: Stephen McGowan: Is Dermot Desmond absentee landlord or Celtic mastermind? Stephen McGowan: Aberdeen cup glory a throwback to golden days for a battered city In an open letter to supporters, new owners Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe identified thoughtful, disciplined investment – guided by a clear strategy – as the path to success. They wrote of decisions being made with sustainability and the club's long-term interests in mind. The appointment of Kevin Thelwell as sporting director might be the most important decision of all. Charged with forging a new strategy, identity and culture, there is no quick or easy way of fast-tracking the process. The patchy recruitment of Nils Koppen and others before him needs to improve. The arrival of former Everton head of recruitment Dan Purdy will help with the critical task of finally implementing a profitable player-trading model. If a decent offer comes for Nico Raskin or Cyriel Dessers this summer, they have to go. Put Ancelotti in charge and the new regime will mirror the direction of travel across Europe's top leagues. From Enzo Maresca to Fabian Hurzeler, more and more teams are under the control of a head coach who answers to a sporting director and overseas owners. If a young thruster is what they want then they should probably elbow Fiorentina out the way and lock Francesco Farioli in a room until he knows the words to 'Penny Arcade' off by heart. So long as he's drawing covetous glances from England or Italy, of course, that's easier said than done. Every candidate for the job has been spinning plates in the air, weighing up their options. Every one of them has pros and cons; every one of them comes with a level of risk. As things stand, Rangers are looking at a new chairman, vice-chairman, five new American board members, three old directors moving out and a new sporting director. With all that flux and change, there's a decent argument for minimising the level of jeopardy in the technical area. They could do that by simply giving the job to Russell Martin. It's a measure of the antipathy some supporters feel about that idea that they'd prefer to take the punt on Ancelotti. From time to time a gamble in Glasgow pays off. A late U-turn from Eddie Howe prompted Celtic to make a panicked call to Ange Postecoglou, a plan B with little or no knowledge of the Scottish game. When the Australian lost three of his opening six league games, his saving grace was good recruitment. He gave the team an identity, a culture and a recognised style of play. When he needed it most, his experience made the difference. Right now it feels as if Rangers are looking for a young Ange. A coach of conviction with plenty to prove who can find his feet in Scottish football quickly, forge a new team and give the folk on the other side of the city a run for their money. Given time and a fair wind Davide Ancelotti just might be that man. With the help and backing of the 49ers investment group, Thelwell and Purdy, standards will surely improve on and off the pitch. He might stamp his authority on the team from day one and be a game-changer. At this stage no one knows for sure that he even has the job. The only thing anybody can say with any conviction is that something has to change. A Celtic boardroom dominated by cautious, conservative men in grey suits has delivered 13 titles in the last 14 years and 21 of the last 27 trophies up for grabs. Far from aping the safety first strategy of their bitter rivals, Rangers are clearly going in a different direction. Study his track record and Andrew Cavenagh made his fortune in health insurance by limiting his exposure to risk as much as possible. Appoint Davide Ancelotti and the new owner won't just be making a big, ballsy call. He'll be casting away the habits of a lifetime.

Carlo Ancelotti in fresh Davide update amid Rangers links
Ancelotti Jr has been linked with the vacant Rangers job over the past few weeks. The Ibrox club remain on the hunt for a permanent successor to Philippe Clement. He was sacked in February, with Barry Ferguson taking interim charge of the team until the season's end. Read more: Ferguson won't be getting the gig long-term, as Rangers seek a new boss. Ancelotti Jr is a candidate. His father has recently taken charge of the Brazilian national team. It was initially anticipated that Davide would join his dad as assistant for a duo of World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay next month, although that is no longer the case. Carlo recently provided a fresh update on his son: "Davide is thinking what to do for the future," he told Sky Sports. "He is in talks with other clubs to try to be the first coach. He knows if he doesn't find another opportunity, he will be here with me." Elsewhere, Rangers have confirmed that there will be further construction work at Ibrox this summer. An email was recently sent to supporters. It read: "We acknowledge the frustration and inconvenience you have experienced in the Copland Rear following the building works in summer 2024. "We understand this has impacted your matchday experience, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption. "As part of the Copland Stand development and to improve the matchday experience, it is intended that specialist glass barriers will replace the current metal barriers in front of row A in the Copland Rear next season. The precise timing of this installation is subject to local authority approvals and the fixture calendar. We will provide confirmation of the timings for this in due course. "In addition, work has commenced on the installation of additional toilet facilities in the Copland Rear and are expected to be completed ahead of season 2025/26. "While these are positive steps to address the issues supporters faced recently, additional work will continue through the season to improve the overall stand and the concourse."

Davide Ancelotti faces Rangers next manager mad dash as Brazil masterplan sparks hectic summer schedule
Rangers next manager candidate Davide Ancelotti IS expected to link up with dad Carlo at Brazil amid conflicting reports over his future. However, the Real Madrid coach is expected to confirm a quick-fire exit from the international set-up after just two games. Ancelotti Jr has long admired by the 49ers Enterprises and incoming Ibrox sporting director Kevin Thelwell as the search for Philippe Clement's permanent successor ramps up - and is understood to be on the shortlist of candidates. But the Scottish Premiership giants face a whirlwind summer if they opt to go with Ancelotti. The Athletic have revealed that Ancelotti Sr and Jr will stick together with Le Selecao - but only for two pre-agreed games against Paraguay and Ecuador. Reports last week had suggested that the trusted lieutenant would stick with his dad as a key member of the backroom team on the road to their place in USA, Canada and Mexico. Davide is now "expected to leave after the two World Cup qualifiers" - with the second clash against Paraguay taking place in the of morning on June 11 at 1.45am UK time. Francesco Mauri - currently technical assistant with the La Liga heavyweights - is also expected to follow Ancelotti Jr to his next club despite previous suggestions he would remain within the Brazil set-up. If he gets the nod, it would leave Ancelotti with just 11 days to become accustomed to the Ibrox environment - should he land in Glasgow 12 hours after the full-time whistle against Paraguay. Nicolas Raskin revealed the Ibrox men are due to report back on June 23 for pre-season. Rangers will enter the Champions League at the second round stage just a month later - with the first leg scheduled for July 22/23. Clubs who reach the elite competition are handed £15.7million just for competing the league phase by UEFA - but the prize pot is expected to surge to at least £40million per club. With a host of incoming and outgoing players expected when the US consortium take control at Ibrox a hasty turnaround could be on the cards following the end of the Premiership campaign last Saturday. Davide Ancelotti sees Rangers next boss cover broken by dad Carlo as Brazil question lingers over 'important' coach
Ancelotti Jr is on the Ibrox radar as they look to appoint Philippe Clement's permanent successor Rangers next manager candidate Davide Ancelotti has been hailed by dad Carlo as an "important" member of his coaching team. The comments from the Real Madrid boss come amid speculation the five-time Champions League winner could take Davide to his next job with the Brazil national team when he leaves the Bernabeu this summer. Record Sport understands the hunt for the next manager in the Ibrox hot seat is at an advanced stage with CEO Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell leading the process - with Ancelotti Jr among the contenders. The Madrid lieutenant has reportedly long admired by the 49ers Enterprises and Thelwell as the search for Philippe Clement's permanent successor ramps up. Barry Ferguson had the job at Ibrox on an interim basis but Rangers ' draw with Hibs to round off the Premiership campaign appears to have pulled the curtain down on his tenure. And Le Selecao bound boss Carlo has broken the silence around the future of his son - insisting he remains a key part of his staff. Speaking ahead of the La Liga clash with Sevilla, he said: 'He's an important part of my coaching staff, also because we have a special father-and-son relationship. "I have a lot of confidence in him. He tells me things that sometimes others on the coaching staff don't dare to. "The coaching staff is young, enthusiastic and makes me think a lot. They are young, but they have experience. "The group of analysts at the club is very good, with Simone (Montanaro) leading them. Real Madrid will be able to enjoy their work in the future. "We're a family and working in a family environment brings out the best in each of us.' Following the 2-2 draw at Easter Road, stand-in gaffer Ferguson admitted he was unclear on his own future. He said: "I hope it's not my last game but we'll see over the next couple of days,. 'I know I can do the job if I get the right tools. I know I can change it. We'll see what happens in the coming days.' Escalating Rangers headlines as Ancelotti shows true colours with uncanny Madrid hunch and UCL chasers 'hot' on Hamza
The wanted Madrid coach is turning heads and an Ibrox striker is being eyed for a move to France In-demand Davide Ancelotti further strengthened his own reputation as the Rangers manager target watched one of his prized pupils at Real Madrid spectacularly prove him right. The 35-year-old is on the Ibrox radar and he continues to show his worth at the Bernabeu after Jacobo Ramon netted in the dying seconds to down Mallorca. And Ancelotti Jr was as happy as anyone inside the Bernabeu following his side's dramatic 2-1 win over the islanders as one of the club's rising stars underlined the faith shown him by the club's assistant boss. Leading Spanish outlets have revealed Ancelotti is one of three men inside Real Madrid who have thrown their weight behind the 20-year-old Spain youth international – further underlining Ancelotti Jr's sway. They state David Alaba has worked closely with him during the duo's shared spell on the side and Toni Rudiger has acted as a mentor. But it's been Ancelotti who has made his intentions clear as he labelled Ramon as a player with all the hallmarks to become a world class player and he was in from the off midweek. Ancelotti's role within the Bernabeu is coming to an end with takeover Kings in the 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh having the coach high on their wishlist for the next boss at Rangers. Meanwhile, ambitious Strasbourg have targeted Rangers breakout star Hamza Igamane. The Ligue 1 side are in the mix for Champions League football but European football in some form is all-but guaranteed. Liam Rosenior's side – part of Chelsea's Blue Co club network – are eyeing an active summer and leading French journalist Mohammed Toubache Ter claims they are "hot" on the 22-year-old. Igamane has been a highlight during a down season with 16 goals across all competitions. The Morocco international has four years remaining on his deal at Ibrox.
