DSMNRU ex-VC & former LU prof Nishith Rai passes away

Lucknow: The first full-time vice-chancellor of Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) and former professor and head of Ancient Indian History and Archaeology at Lucknow University , Prof Nishith Rai (61), passed away after prolonged illness on Tuesday. Rai is survived by his wife, Aneeta Rai, son Vidhu Shekhar, an IAS officer, and daughter Shachi Rai, an assistant professor at Lucknow University's economics department. The academic fraternity and students across the country and abroad mourned the demise of Prof Rai. He held various positions, including the director of the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies, and was a member of the executive council of various universities. He was also the founder of a newspaper. As a teacher, he guided around 30 PhD and four MPhil scholars. Not just people in academia, but many senior leaders, including senior functionary of the Samajwadi Party , Shivpal Yadav, reached his residence and paid respect to the departed soul. His demise is an irreparable loss to the academic world," he said. "Prof Rai contributed immensely to the development of DSMNRU and took the institution to new heights. His demise is a loss for the entire university family. He was awarded the President's Award-2014 by then President Pranab Mukherjee for outstanding contribution in the field of disability," said DSMNRU VC Prof Sanjay Singh. He said that during his tenure, the department of posts of the ministry of information and technology, issued a postage stamp on completion of 11 years of the establishment of DSMNRU in 2020. "I have never seen such a soft-spoken and humble administrator. He did a lot for disabled students, including the establishment of an artificial limb and rehabilitation centre through which thousands of disabled people have been facilitated with limbs, assistive devices, and services, free of charge. LUTA polls: History prof is new president

Lucknow: The Lucknow University Teachers' Association (LUTA) executive polls 2025 on Saturday witnessed a nail-biting contest for the posts of president and general secretary amid a record turnout. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A voting percentage of 96% was recorded, as 389 out of 405 registered voters turned up to exercise their franchise. Associate Professor Anitya Gaurav from the Ancient Indian History department won the election for the post of LUTA president bagging 197 votes. It was a close contest with opponent Vineet Kumar Verma from the mathematics and astronomy department bagging 175 votes. The third candidate Ajay Kumar Arya from the geology department got 16 votes. Anitya Gaurav, who served as LUTA general secretary in 2024, thanked all for his victory and said: "From teachers' timely promotion, residence for new teachers on the campus, extension in retirement age from 62 to 65 years, I will give my best to fulfil all the promises made by me. " Prof Ram Milan from the commerce department was elected as the general secretary, winning 196 votes. His opponent, Associate Professor Rajendra Kumar Verma got 171 votes while the other three candidates got below 50 votes: zoology Prof Amita Kanaujia (43), Assistant Professor Bhupesh Kumar (17) and Associate Professor philosophy Mamta Singh (9) votes. Prof Ram Milan said: "I will ensure that I fulfil all my promises, be it efforts to help teachers get leave encashment of 300 days, to end the mandatory biometric attendance rule, ensure timely payment for examination duties done by teachers, promote professors to the post of senior professors, and provide cashless health insurance, among other things." Three teachers were elected for the post of vice president: Associate Professor CR Gautam from the physics department (255 votes), Assistant Professor AAA Jafri from Oriental Studies in Arabic and Persian (202 votes) and Professor Monisha Banerjee from the zoology department (156 votes). Others elected for different LUTA posts were Ashok Kumar, Karuna Shanker Kanaujia and Akash Asthana as joint secretaries, Dinesh Yadav as treasurer, Sanjay Medhavi as faculty of management representative, Shyamlesh Kumar Tiwari, Gaurav Singh and Annamali Senthil Kumar as arts faculty representatives, Sangeeta Srivastava, Bharat Kuma and Suchit Swaroop as science faculty representatives, Chandrakant Kushwaha as commerce faculty representative, Sanjay Singh Yadav as education faculty representative, Alok Kumar as fine arts faculty representative and Niharika as law faculty representative.
