Mohammed Siraj hits career-best ICC Test ranking after Oval show; Shubman Gill exits top 10 despite stellar England tour
India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, on Wednesday, jumped 12 spots to reach a career-high spot in the latest ICC Test rankings following his stellar performance in the recently concluded fifth and final Test match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. Siraj picked nine wickets in the match to help India pull off a magnificent six-run heist and end the series on a 2-2 draw. India captain Shubman Gill and teammate Mohammed Siraj celebrate after defeating England by 6 runs in the 5th test match of Anderson-Tendulkar Series, at Kennington Oval stadium(@BCCI X) Siraj picked up four wickets in the first innings of the Test match at The Oval, before returning in the second innings to register his fifth career five-wicket haul as England were folded for 367 runs in their chase of 374. He was adjudged 'Player of the Match' after he accounted for three batters, including the last dismissal of Gus Atkinson, to earn India a remarkable win. After the performance, Siraj moved 12 places to take the 15th in the ICC Test rankings. His previous best ranking was 16, which he achieved in January last year. ALSO READ: India, England players end bad blood, bury controversies during series afterparty, Siraj the star attraction: Report Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested in two of the matches on the England tour, including the series finale at The Oval, continues to dominate the bowling chart with 889 points. Prasidh Krishna, the other wrecker-in-chief for England in the Oval Test match, also attained a career-best ranking of 59th position. He had finished with eight wickets in the fifth game against England. Gill out of top 10 India captain Shubman Gill, who was adjudged as the Player of the Series for his record-breaking batting performance against England, dropped out of the top 10 in the latest ICC Test ranking. He scored 754 runs in 10 innings on the tour, the most-ever by an Indian captain in a single Test series, and the second highest in history after Don Bradman's 801 against England at home in 1937. However, with the 25-year-old having managed just 32 runs in the final Test, he dropped four places to stand 13th in the ICC rankings for batters. India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, however, returned to the top five after notching up his second century in the series against England at The Oval. He rose three spots to take the fifth position and is on 792 points, while the only other Indian batter in the top-10 is Rishabh Pant, who has slipped one spot to eighth as he could not play the fifth Test due to a foot injury. Charismatic England batter Joe Root has firmed up his position at the top with his third century in as many matches, while Harry Brook's 98-ball 111 has helped him claw back to second position.

IND vs ENG Series In Numbers: Mohammed Siraj bowls more than 1,100 deliveries to be leading wicket-taker; Shubman Gill top of run-scorers list
India vs England (Anderson-Tendulkar Series) in Numbers: An incredibly dramatic series came to a scarcely believable finish on Monday at The Oval, as India picked up four wickets within the first hour to dismiss England for 367 and level the series 2-2. The first edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy has thus been shared between Ben Stokes' England and Shubman Gill's India. Siraj was inspired as India took the last four wickets to win an astonishing final Test by six runs to draw the series on Monday. Siraj was India's hero, dismissing Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton before bowling Gus Atkinson to complete a five-wicket haul. After Prasidh Krishna had bowled Josh Tongue for nought, Chris Woakes walked out to bat wearing a sling to protect his dislocated shoulder with 17 runs still needed. Atkinson hit Siraj for six to give England brief hope and cleverly protected Woakes from the strike, but Siraj produced another brilliant yorker to earn India their narrowest-ever test win. India dominated the batting charts for the series while Siraj led the way among the bowlers. A whopping 1113 deliveries. Mohammed Siraj was a machine. From Leeds to London, Siraj was the only pacer across both teams to last all five Test matches. He bowled 185.3 overs, and finished as the leading wicket-taker with 23 wickets. Siraj's wickets came at a slightly expensive average of 32.43 but that is to be expected in a high-scoring series mostly played on flat wickets against an aggressive batting unit. Josh Tongue had an interesting series too, not always the most accurate bowler but picking up a clutch of wickets, finishing 2nd with 19 wickets in three Tests. Ben Stokes, who would have dearly loved to be on the field at The Oval, but had to miss out because of the workload he took on himself, finished third with 17 wickets. Jasprit Bumrah missed the two matches that India won but was still among the top wicket-takers, picking up 14 from the three matches and five innings that he bowled. Drawing level with Bumrah on the final day was Prasidh Krishna, who had an expensive series conceding at 4.94 runs per over, but the wickets he picked in the end were critical in India fighting back, as he finished with 14 wickets too. That Shubman Gill marathon effort in the second Test where he scored 430 runs would alone be 7th best on the run-scoring chart. He finished with 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 754 and a highest score of 269 – a new personal best that he broke once already in the series after starting well in Leeds. The second best was Joe Root, who went past legends like Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, and Ricky Ponting in one innings and is now only behind the great man, Sachin Tendulkar for run tally in Test cricket. Root's 537 runs came at an average of 67.12 with three centuries to his name. KL Rahul too had a personal milestone of a series, with 532 runs at the top of the order, scoring two centuries. India's third man with 500+ in the series was arguably the most consistent of the batters, with five half centuries and a century at No 6 or lower: Ravindra Jadeja, who finished with 516 runs. Harry Brook reminded the world why he is England's next big thing, with two centuries and a 99, finishing with 481 runs. He, however, would have loved add a few more when England were cruising towards a 3-1 win.

‘Can someone show Prithvi this? It can be done': Pietersen lauds Sarfaraz's fitness overhaul, points out Shaw
Middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan underwent a rigorous transformation, shedding nearly 17 kgs in hopes of reviving his international career after being unexpectedly omitted from India's Test squad for the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Series against England. Working tirelessly with his father — his lifelong coach — Sarfaraz dedicated the past few months to intense fitness training. Having gone unsold in the Indian Premier League 2025, the batter channelled that disappointment into his weight-loss mission. In Sarfaraz's absence, Karun Nair was picked by the selection committee for the England tour as the Karnataka batter made his India comeback after eight years. Former England star Kevin Pietersen praised Sarfaraz's dedication, predicting it would translate to improved on-field performances. Posting on X, Pietersen wrote: 'Outstanding effort, young man! Huge congrats and I'm sure it's going to lead to better and more consistent performances on the field. I love the time you've spent reorganising your priorities! LFG!' In a pointed remark, he added: 'Can someone show Prithvi this please? It can be done! Strong body, strong mind!' referencing out-of-form Prithvi Shaw, who has faced persistent criticism regarding his fitness. Outstanding effort, young man! Huge congrats and I'm sure it's going to lead to better and more consistent performances on the field. I love the time you've spent reorganising your priorities! LFG! 🚀 Can someone show Prithvi this please? It can be done! Strong body, strong… — Kevin Pietersen🦏 (@KP24) July 21, 2025 Shaw was dropped by the Mumbai senior selection committee last year from a Ranji Trophy game due to poor fitness and was prescribed a two-week fitness programme prepared by the MCA trainers. The team management had informed MCA that Prithvi Shaw's body contains 35 percent fat and that he needs rigorous training before he gets back into the side. Last October, the selection committee of MCA had taken a call that Shaw needed to shed off a few kilos, if he wants to play for the Mumbai team again. His fitness and form never improved and as a result the selection committee decided to drop him from Vijay Hazare Trophy too which was played in December 2024. Shaw moved away from Mumbai and is set to play for Maharashtra from the next domestic season after receiving a NOC from MCA.
