Single-use plastics banned on A.P. Secretariat premises from August 15
The Andhra Pradesh Secretariat has imposed a complete ban on single-use plastics from August 15 on its premises under the slogan 'Say No to Single-Use Plastic'. The moves is in line with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's vision to make the State free of single-use plastics by June 5, 2026 — World Environment Day. Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand, in a review with department heads on Tuesday (August 12, 2025), said that all plastic bottles, cups, plates, spoons, and other disposable items will be prohibited in the Secretariat. From August 18, only glass and stainless steel bottles will be used for drinking water. Four RO plants and 32 bottle dispensing units are being installed, with 750 ml glass or steel bottles provided to staff. Mr. Vijayanand instructed all departments to ensure full compliance and create awareness among visitors. MA&UD Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar said that the shift will reduce costs — a reusable glass or steel bottle costs ₹3 compared to ₹8 for a plastic one. The government plans to extend the ban to all government offices by year-end, before scaling it State-wide. Officials stressed on the environmental and health hazards of plastic, from marine pollution to increased risks of cancer, infertility, and other diseases due to microplastics. The initiative aims to set a model for the public while addressing one of the most pressing ecological challenges. Senior officials, including Special Chief Secretaries and heads of Swachh Andhra Corporation and Pollution Control Board, took part in the meeting.
