Disney on Wednesday rounded out the major studio shows at CineEurope, presented for the first time by veteran distribution exec Andrew Cripps, who moved to the studio in March as Head of Theatrical Distribution. Titles across the seven studios under the Disney umbrella were highlighted at the Barcelona-set confab — kicked off by the ongoing success of Lilo & Stitch which is expected to cross $900 million this weekend on its way to becoming Hollywood's first $1 billion grosser of 2025. Stitch plushies adorned every seat in the auditorium and sported lights that flashed along with the show. That was followed by the opening scene from Toy Story 5 which buzzes to cinemas in June next year. Joachim Rønning then introduced footage of Tron: Ares, the third installment in the groundbreaking franchise that began in 1982. Exhibitors were also shown a new trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps, introduced by Marvel boss Kevin Feige, who also teased Avengers: Doomsday now shooting in London and due for release in December 2026. The events of F4, Feige said, will lead directly into Doomsday. Zootopia 2 (or Zootropolis 2 as it's known in some overseas markets), was repped by scenes that were previously shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. From Searchlight came a new sizzle reel for horror comedy sequel Ready or Not 2, which wrapped shooting two weeks ago and is on deck for a spring 2026 release. The Brendan Fraser-starrer Rental Family got a look with a new reel for the story of a lonely, down-and-out American actor living in Tokyo who starts working for a Japanese 'rental family' company to play various stand-in roles in other people's lives. Also from Searchlight, the Olivia Colman- and Benedict Cumberbatch-led black comedy The Roses dropped a new clip. Over in the Star Wars universe, a sizzle for The Mandalorian and Grogu, both characters making their debut on the big screen in May next year, was introduced by director Jon Favreau in a video. The film is in post. Further shown was a new look at 20th Century's Predator: Badlands from Prey director and Dan Trachtenberg, who's turning the concept on its head by making the titular character a hero. Also from 20th was a visit to Sam Raimi's currently-in-production survival/horror/thriller Send Help, starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien as co-workers who are stranded on an island after a plane crash. Rounding out the presentation, Disney took a look back at the lasting impact of 2006's The Devil Wears Prada now that the sequel is getting ready to shoot this summer. Finally, ahead of footage of December threequel Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron sent a message to CineEurope from New Zealand where he's working on finishing the movie. He promised 'a side of Pandora you didn't know existed.' He also said he wanted to thank and recognize his longtime collaborator and producer Jon Landau, who died last July. 'I feel his passion, wisdom, warmth and caring have guided us every step of the way since then,' Cameron said. 'He would be so proud of his final production.' Disney Brings Superheroes, Springsteen and 3D ‘Avatar' to CinemaCon

For years, Andrew Cripps was known at CinemaCon for showing up at Warner Bros.' presentations in all sorts of costumes. This year, he showed up in a much different role: as Disney's new head of theatrical distribution. Cripps took over the position from Tony Chambers, who now serves as Disney's president of EMEA, at a time when Disney's successful 2024 gave way to a 2025 start in which 'Captain America: Brave New World' had to fight just to reach break-even territory while 'Snow White' has fallen to the ignominious status of the biggest flop in Disney's remake series. Fortunately for the studio, the rest of the year's slate is looking much brighter, and Cripps noted that the films to come, like all of Disney's films over the past two years, come with the longest theatrical window in the industry. Without much fanfare, Disney started a 100-day theatrical window on all of its films starting with 'Avatar: The Way of Water,' with no promotion of the film's release on Disney+ prior to the day it hits streaming. 'For many years, I have sat where you are watching in awe at the breadth and width of Disney's slate, and it is an honor to now stand up here to show you what we have coming to your theaters in the months ahead,' he said. The changes weren't limited to Cripps. In past years, Disney eschewed the cast and filmmaker appearances that other studios would do at CinemaCon, instead just letting the cameras roll with lengthy sneak peeks. This time, they went the traditional route with in-person appearances from cast members of many of their films. The show opened with a sneak peek of 'Lilo & Stitch,' with Lilo, played by the six-year-old Maia Kealoha, trying and failing to get the CGI Stitch to put down a soda gun. In a rare absence, Kevin Feige spoke to CinemaCon attendees from a video message rather than in person, as he is now on the London set of 'Avengers: Doomsday.' He introduced a first look at Julia Garner's Silver Surfer in 'Fantastic 4: First Steps,' while the cast of 'Thunderbolts' showed up in person to present one of their film's fight scenes. One of the more intriguing aspects of the presentation was 20th Century Studios, which is now under the leadership of David Greenbaum and, along with franchise titles like 'Predator: Badlands' and commercial biopics like 'Deliver Me From Nowhere' starring Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen, is also now producing the sort of mature fare that Disney once released under labels like Touchstone Pictures. CinemaCon attendees got a first look at Greenbaum's efforts with Ella McCay, a dramedy starring Emma Mackey as an idealistic politician who suddenly finds herself as the governor of Rhode Island when the previous one resigns. Now in a seat of power at the age of 34, she must balance her difficult new job with personal struggles with her family. The film is currently in production under the direction of James L. Brooks, who showed up to receive an award from Cinema United. But after sneak peek clips of Pixar's 'Elio' and Disney's 'Zootopia 2,' the show ended with the first teaser of what will likely be the highest grossing movie of the year, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' a film that marks a pivotal point in James Cameron's planned five-film saga on Pandora and shows a raging tribe of Na'vi called the Ash People who have forsaken Eywa. While Disney may be struggling with its recent films, 'Captain America: Brave New World' and 'Snow White' still stand as the two highest grossing movies of the year so far. And with the rest of its slate, it is expected to be the top grossing studio in Hollywood for the ninth time in the past 10 years. Hollywood Ditches DEI to Avoid Donald Trump's Wrath

In 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery launched its 'Diversity Digest,' a quarterly update on the company's DEI efforts. The first installment highlighted Latino representation in 'Blue Beetle' and home renovation show 'Rico to the Rescue.' But after regular updates in 2024, the digest went silent after the election of President Trump. Last week, the feature was dropped from the company's DEI page, along with WBD's commitments to equity and diversity outreach, as the company narrowed its focus to 'inclusion.' The move came as Trump has sought to stamp out DEI programs at the federal level and threatened civil and criminal investigations of private companies. Last month, the Federal Communications Commission opened an investigation of Comcast, the parent of NBCUniversal — and MSNBC — for possibly pursuing 'invidious forms of discrimination' under the banner of DEI. Executive Andrew Cripps as Head of Theatrical Distribution 'Bullying is causing a lot of companies to reassess,' says Vernā Myers, former head of inclusion at Netflix. 'Most smart companies are just trying to figure out how far this is going to go. They're trying to stay out of the crosshairs.' For its part, a spokesperson for Comcast said the company will cooperate with the FCC to answer their questions, adding, 'for decades, our company has been built on a foundation of integrity and respect for all of our employees and customers.' But the Comcast experience isn't one other media conglomerates want to repeat. Among the companies changing their approach to DEI are The Walt Disney Co., which recently announced that it was ending 'Reimagine Tomorrow,' an initiative intended to promote stories from underrepresented communities. And it's not alone. Amazon and, just last week, Paramount and WBD walked back programs that embedded DEI in hiring and promotion practices. Disney has played an outsize role in the culture wars, so its decision was particularly thrilling for conservatives. America First Legal, which has launched numerous efforts to challenge corporate DEI policies, hailed the move as a major victory. 'Disney has finally backed down after years of treating people differently based on characteristics like race and sex,' says Will Scolinos, counsel for the organization. For supporters of DEI policies, it was hard to tell if Disney was truly rolling back its efforts or just trying to lay low. Either way, it's clear that the political climate has shifted. At the recent NAACP Awards, the crowd was still reeling from Trump's victory. Kamala Harris stopped by to offer encouragement, saying, 'This chapter will be written not simply by whoever occupies the Oval Office. The American story will be written by you, written by us — by we the people.' At the Pasadena Civic Auditorium where the awards ceremony was held, a sense of resolve was tempered with anxiety that the entertainment industry is caving to political pressure. 'Now it's like, 'What are we going to do?'' Laverne Cox, the star of 'Orange is the New Black.' 'Our representatives basically have told us and are showing us that they're working to enrich themselves and corporations, and they can give an F about us.' For now, Trump is in charge and exerting his power and influence. In the face of federal probes and potential penalties, experts believe the entertainment industry will continue to dial down explicit efforts to diversify its workforce in favor of vaguer goals of promoting inclusivity. 'If companies say they are just making sure that everyone has an even playing field, that's probably OK because the law of the land is you cannot discriminate,' says Jared Slater, a partner at Ervin Cohen & Jessup specializing in labor law. 'If they talk about having a certain percentage of minority talent working on movies or in their executive ranks, they're going to have difficulties.' Some initiatives are mandated by union contracts, such as the Television Director Development Programs, which were secured by the Directors Guild of America. But other efforts may prove fleeting. Even before Trump retook power, several high-profile DEI executives left studios in 2023. The inclusion rider, a contractual tool allowing top talent to ensure greater diversity in productions, never drew much buy-in. Only a handful of creatives, such as Michael B. Jordan and Brie Larson, invoked the provision. Some fear the trend away from DEI will accelerate now that Trump has turned it into a dirty word. 'There's going to be a lot of self-censorship,' predicts Joslyn Barnes, a producer and writer on 'Nickel Boys.' 'We're already seeing that — people going to kiss the ring, so to speak.' Others are confident that companies will continue to recognize that diversity and inclusion are in their long-term interests. 'It's almost impossible for entertainment companies to withdraw holistically from the work of diversity, equity and inclusion,' Myers says. 'There's no way you're going to compete without creating the kind of authentic programming where people feel reflected.' Stacy Smith of USC's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative agrees, saying companies have bigger problems than the chaos in Washington: 'It's the audience that the C-suite should fear the most.'
