Shekhar Kapur shares rare moment of A.R. Rahman and Andrew Lloyd Webber creating music together
Picture Credit: X Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur took to social media to share a rare and cherished memory of A.R. Rahman and Andrew Lloyd Webber creating magical music together on the same piano - a moment that blended two worlds of musical genius. Taking to Instagram, Shekhar Kapur shared a rare, unseen throwback photo featuring himself with Rahman and Webber during the world announcement of Bombay Dreams-the first-ever Bollywood musical to make it to London's West End and later Broadway in New York. Reflecting on the journey, Kapur called his life "one huge adventure," urging everyone to embrace uncertainty and spontaneity. In a thought-provoking caption, he wrote, "Life has been one huge adventure. But how does adventure happen unless you actively open yourself to the adventure of life? And to open yourself to adventure, you have to fight the greatest human failing of all. The addiction to certainty. The addiction to control." Shekhar Kapur went on to reveal how "Bombay Dreams" was born from a casual lunchtime conversation with Andrew Lloyd Webber. That chance remark soon evolved into a groundbreaking musical collaboration. The photo he shared was taken at a party held at Mumbai's iconic Taj Mahal Hotel, where Rahman and Webber sat together at the same piano, creating music on the spot-an unforgettable moment in East-meets-West creative synergy. "Bombay Dreams was born of one chance lunchtime remark by me to Andrew Lloyd Webber .. out of which this picture was taken at the world announcement of the project .. at a party in Mumbai's iconic Taj Mahal Hotel .. and where A R Rahman and Andrew Lloyd Webber played together on the same piano .. creating amazing music on the go ..One chance remark .. led to the first 'Bollywood' musical ever on the West End in London and in Broadway in New York . .One chance remark! #andrewlloydwebber #arrahmaan #BombayDreams #westend #London #musical," added the director. 'Bombay Dreams' is a vibrant stage musical inspired by Bollywood, featuring music by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Don Black. The script was penned by Meera Syal and Thomas Meehan, with Andrew Lloyd Webber backing the original production. It premiered in London in 2002, enjoying a successful two-year run before making its way to Broadway in 2004. 'Wicked' star Cynthia Erivo laughs at critics of her playing Jesus in upcoming musical
"Wicked" star Cynthia Erivo doesn't see an issue with playing the role of Jesus Christ in an upcoming performance of "Jesus Christ Superstar." In a recent interview with Billboard, the actress laughed off outrage that she would be playing Jesus in an upcoming rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical. "Why not?" she asked Billboard when asked about people saying she shouldn't perform the role. "You can't please everyone." Erivo is set to perform in the rock opera at the upcoming Hollywood Bowl production of the musical that runs from August 1 to August 3 this year. News that the actress would be Jesus caused controversy for Christians and conservatives on social media last February. At the time, Christian pastor, John K. Amanchukwu Sr., complained about the casting on social media, stating, "With all due respect, and humbly submitted, Cynthia Erivo is too BALD, BROWN, and BI to play Jesus. Casting a woman as Jesus Christ is an intentional form of blasphemy that Hollywood would be fuming over if done to certain other religions." Conservative Christian influencer Alexandra Lains posted her complaints about the casting decision, stating, "Christianity seems to be the only religion that's never off limits for Hollywood to disrespect. Cynthia Erivo, a black woman, as Jesus Christ? Please stop with the lunacy." The Billboard interview, published on Monday, noted that Erivo "can't help but laugh" at the outrage. She justified taking the role and said people will get over it once they see it. "It is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off. So, hopefully they will come and realize, 'Oh, it's a musical, the gayest place on Earth,'" she said. Erivo was nominated for Best Actress for her performance in the hit musical "Wicked" as Elphaba. Elsewhere during the interview, the entertainer weighed in on President Donald Trump's overhaul of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., in February. Trump fired several Kennedy Center board members, including the president and chairman, and replaced them with pro-Trump figures, who then named the president as chairman. The outlet said that Erivo expressed "dread" over the recent Kennedy Center changes. She told Billboard, "I don't know who gains what from that. I hope that it comes back," she says. "It's really sad to have to watch this happen to it. The Kennedy Center is supposed to be a space of creativity and art and music for everyone."

‘Sunset Boulevard': Will Andrew Lloyd Webber break a 30-year Tony drought?
In 1995, the original Broadway staging of Sunset Boulevard won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. That marked the last time an Andrew Lloyd Webber show won a Best Production accolade from the American Theatre Wing. Exactly 30 years later, the current remounting is the frontrunner to win Best Musical Revival. If it prevails, it'd be quite a full-circle moment for the legendary composer. In the years since Sunset Boulevard originally contended, four more Lloyd Webber titles were nominated for a Best Show award, but didn't prevail: More from GoldDerby 'The Last of Us' director Kate Herron on bringing the Ellie and Dina relationship to the show: 'It was a privilege' How Zoe Saldaña helped shape Pixar's upcoming film 'Elio' 'The Pitt' star Supriya Ganesh on Mohan 'reworking' her trauma and when she'll realize Abbot is flirting with her Jesus Christ Superstar for Best Musical Revival in 2000; lost to Kiss Me, Kate Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar for Best Musical Revival in 2012; both lost to Porgy & Bess School of Rock for Best Musical in 2016; lost to Hamilton The Broadway legend also had three other shows eligible for Best Musical noms, but each of them were nearly shut out: By Jeeves in 2002, The Woman in White in 2006 (even though it showed up for Best Score), and Bad Cinderella in 2023. In 2017, two of his shows were eligible for Best Musical Revival, but both of them were completely ignored: Cats and the previous remounting of Sunset Boulevard. This year, the current Sunset Boulevard has seven nominations overall. Many are expecting it to do well on Tony night in terms of wins. In addition to Best Musical Revival, it's also expected to take home Best Direction of a Musical (Jamie Lloyd) and Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Jack Knowles). See Gold Derby's Tony odds. Nicole Scherzinger, who's in second place for Best Actress in a Musical, is competitive for the win up against current frontrunner, Audra McDonald in Gypsy. The former has already won an Olivier (for the production's West End run) and Drama League Awards for her performance as Norma Desmond. This is a role that previously won Glenn Close a Tony for the original production. The rest of this year's Best Musical Revival lineup includes Gypsy (second place), Floyd Collins (third place), and Pirates! The Penzance Musical (fourth place). X Factor winner Joe McElderry looks unrecognisable as he shows off his shirtless physique while hitting the beach in Barbados
Joe McElderry was spotted looking strikingly different to his X Factor heyday while soaking up the sun in Barbados on Friday. The British singer, 33, shot to fame more than 15 years ago when he won the show at aged just 18 in 2009. And nearly two decades after his triumph, Joe looked almost unrecognisable from his baby-faced younger self as he enjoyed a sunny day on the beach during his Caribbean holiday. The singer, who now rocks a rugged look with dark stubble and slicked-back hair, went for a jog along the shoreline, showing off his tanned physique. The star then stripped off his shirt and took a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear ocean. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. It comes after Joe took to the stage to star as Pharaoh in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in March. Dancing and singing across the stage at Manchester's Opera House, he put on an energetic performance as he showcased his muscly physique in a silver gladiator costume. The production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's show kicked off their tour before Christmas and started in Edinburgh. Prior to this, Joe revealed he trained with former Miss Universe finalist Caroline Dixon and followed a strict diet to get in shape for the role. Previously speaking in an interview with Fabulous magazine, he said: 'Most of the stuff we do is killer, but in a weird way I really enjoy it.' He added: 'I'm a really active person and I've done lots of charity bike rides.' The star showed off his incredible body transformation on Instagram at the end of 2024 as he proudly displayed his toned physique as he donned nothing but a pair of grey workout shorts and chunky black trainers. He captioned the snap with: '2025 the year of the workout' alongside several emojis. The singer has worked hard to lose weight after he sported a fuller frame during an appearance on ITV daytime show, Lorraine, in 2015. Joe starred on X Factor when he was just 18 years old back in 2009, beating Stacey and Olly to the crown. But more recently he has embarked on a huge career move and is starring on the podcast, That's Ridiculous alongside his grandma Hilda. Joe also reminisced about his time on the show which catapulted him to fame. He said: 'Every time I see that clip, I feel so old, I look so young on there!', he said. Joe's debut single - a cover of Miley Cyrus' The Climb - rose to number one in the UK charts immediately after his X Factor triumph. The talent show star boasts a discography of five albums, which all made the top 20.
